SCIATICA sufferers, how long must this pain last - even w/heavy duty 500 MG pills I still wake up every 5 hours. Have not been able to sew/embroider since taking that Bernia pillow class Sept.11

sciatica can be caused by a lot of different things, it is by definition nerve pain, as the sciatic nerve is a very long one that runs down from your back all the way down you legs. it can be very painful and debilitating, I would suggest that a combination of massage, really learning how to relax. heat packs will help. but here is my special recipe:
you need to get these essential oils: clary sage, peppermint and lemongrass. mix three drops of each with one tablespoon of carrier oil. I use olive oil because I always have it in the pantry, but almond oil is really nice. To be honest I get a bit more heavy handed with the peppermint, I use about 6 to 9 drops of that. massage this into the painful spots, it really feels like the pain is being sucked out.
to make sure you are getting pure essential oils the simple way to tell is if they all have different prices. If you are looking at a bunch of oils and they are all $2.99 each then they are not pure essential oils.

Thank you for your fine information. I'm willing at this point to try anything. The 500 MG pills are not making the pain in my lower back and right leg any better; they just make me dizzy and funny.

I had sciatiica for couple months;did everything for relief. The chirop said, lots of ice...Had a cruise planned and went-didn't want to. Was miserable; every late afternoon, laid down with ice packs along with couple drinks! Came home and that evening, I was visiting a neighbor outside and just turned and I felt something move from tailbone to hip. That nite, I slept first time in months. A nerve was probably being pinched, I have went to chirop.'s for 30 years and I believe,it's part of the good health that I have.Hang in there, something might work...Diane

Thank you everyone who answered, I will be seeing a chiropractic Mon. I will go lie down on the floor using a pillow, I try not to take the meds but one pill every 12 hours especially at night. Will check into the Flector Patch. All of you get bouquets of flowers. Thank you.

Sympathy and empathy! When I had sciatica I went for three weeks without being able to even lie down. I spent almost the whole time on my hands and knees which was the least painful position. Hope yours gets better soon.

My husband has this pain too. He had a back surgury and they damaged the sciatic nerve. There is nothing that can be done just pain meds. The doctors say that he will have to just learn to live with the pain. That is easy for them to say when they don't have to live with it.

Have you tried seeing a physical therapist? I am a PT and treat many people with sciatica. If you are in the USA, you may have to go to a physician first
so your insurance will pay for the treatments. The best treatments are rest, and the right kind of exercise. Hope you feel better.

Margie I feel for you. My hubby severed his sciatic nerve at 10 yrs old. Too many surgeries to count through the yrs. No use now of that foot & very little use of the leg. The pain is constant & at times almost unbearable for him. Heat helps, Physical Therapy. sometimes when inflammation sets in, complete bed rest. In your case it will get better in time, usually sitting long times etc if it is pinched at the spine causes the pain you have. The nerve gets irritated & lets you know it. I hope you will be better soon.

How I wish you had not joined my club! Any way, these are the things that help me. Definitely go to a chiropractor. Ask if the doctor is Palmer trained. Some of them will try to get you to sign a contract for x number of visits. Don't sign. Only use one who sees you for the number of visits you need. The massage therapist will help by relaxing your muscles. This is a very good thing to do also. I have used so many pills including heavy duty meds. I refuse to do this anymore. So what helps me is to lay on the floor with my feet over an ottoman. It needs to be about the same height as the length of your thigh. Just lay there and hopefully it will take pressure off your impinged sciatic nerve. I have laid there for an hour sometimes because I finally fell asleep. The other 2 things I use are those thermo heat wraps. Warmth seems to help me. And when I travel or go to anyplace where I am going to be sitting for long periods of time I use a gel cushion to sit on and Flector Patches. They are expensive, but help me. I use them only when necessary. The patch goes over my damaged disk and releases the pain med right into the painful area. The best thing has been laying on the floor though. It helps me get back under control. Hope at least one of these suggestions helps. The pain is a catch 22 situation. It makes you tighten up which only makes it worse. So let's break that cycle and get you back on your feet. Keep us informed please.

Have you tried a Chiropractor? My dad had sciatica for about a couple of months. We finally convinced him to go to the Chiropractor it took a few visits but it worked. The massaging does help also. I do know about tush pain though. I broke my tail bone and it took over a year to heal... Hope you get better.
