Just a point of interest. Do all Cuties realise that in the world of Mobile Phones, computers etc. capital letters mean that you are shouting. Thought I would let you all know.

On this site I use Capital Letter because You Cant see my SMILE. SO The caps here take the place of a smile for me because you guys are so great.

Bless your heart..don't think anyone here is on you for your comment. But we do all laugh a lot, usually at ourself! Am fairly sure I knew that was shouting, but after all these yrs using that as emphasis, I still do so! And I still think LOL is lots of love!! Wonder what SWAK means now instead of "sealed with a kiss?" Not many letters mailed these days SWAK!! Enjoy all the wacky comments & just LOL!

I have no idea if they've change the meaning of SWAK, but I did have to ask my Niece what MWA meant.

For those who don't know, it is GIVING a kiss, like when you purse your lips and blow someone a kiss.

How in blazes someone thought smooching a kiss sounds like Mwa! is truly beyond me, but I now find I use it all the time in txts and no-one has asked ME what it meant???????

If we don't stress over misspelled words, punctuation, or grammar, why stress over capitals?

Hi Margaret - I've loved this thread!!!! It's been a lot of fun reading all the comments. I'm so glad, too, that Meganne's Aussie humour was appreciated. Sometimes people have a hard time trying to work out what we DownUnderlings are trying to say - or not say as is often the way with Aussie fun.

I'm with Mops and have a bit/lot of trouble reading complete messages in upper case, after years of correcting my students' English. Also I skim read and it's not easy skimming caps, but, Hey!! put up with me and I'll put up with you!!

Also.... 'when I am old I shall wear purple', I shall do all the things I've told my kids not to do, I shall annoy and irritate the youngsters who are now finding grey hairs above their ears, I shall dress like a slob until my freebies have been found and safely stored away, I shall ignore all housework, I shall eat as many lollies as I want, I shall do just what I please, I shall climb the highest gumtree and scream out COOOOOOOoooEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeee!!!!

Here I am, where are you!!!
The World will hear me and I shall have fun!!!!!

And .... next year when I turn 75 I'll invite all my friends here to join me, shinny up a gumtree and scream out to the rest of the world
COOOOOOOoooEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeee!!!!

Want to come along for the ride??????

This subject really got your 'juices flowing'. And no Linda I did not expect this reaction. I will have to put my picture up so you can all see that I am not some 'young thing". And yes I also have a pair of 'computer glasses' made especially for working on the computer. Its a bugger having to change glasses all the time but would be up sh... creek without them. Have a great day and continue to laugh. My motto is "If you can't laugh you would cry". Margaret

I had a good laugh at all the answers, especially Meganne's. But am I the only one who find reading capitals far more difficult than reading normal print? Since I was able to read I've been used to capitals at the beginning of a sentence, proper names and so on, and I take so much more time reading capitals only.
As far as eyesight is concerned, I sometimes set my screen at 125% instead of 100 (right hand bottom corner), you can go much higher than that and I find that much more comfortable than capitals - so I always skip those questions.

LMAO-oops-didn't mean to laugh so loud-us oldies have a tendency to do that sometimes-probably from all the years of having to yell to be heard over the tv,pets, kids, husbands -but it is also a way of showing excitement about something. Meganne, you made truly laugh out loud ~smiles~ *linda*

After reading through the answers ~ For all who has bad vision here are a couple computer aids I use. I do wear bifocal contact lenses but still need help seeing some items. (Had an wasp leave it's stinger in my eye when I was seven.) In the lower right hand corner of my computer there is a magnifier with a zoom and you can make your fonts larger in percentages. Also, in the top where it says "File Edit View Favorites Tools Help" if you click on View you can change you Text size.

by meganne 25 Sep 2010

Now don't you go getting your knickers in a knot over it dear.

Most of us old timers can't see very well so we type in caps because we can't make the font any larger. My time is coming because I have cataracts growing so I guess it won't be long before I'll be using the Caps lock as well as the walking stick and hearing horn.

So please forgive us all who aren't so youthfull, and please don't feel you are being chastised for pointing out something we all already knew, but ignored.

You see, when you get older your sense of humour seems to kick in (bigtime) so we have to get our jollies where we can, sometimes even at the expense of some poor newbie who meant well and thought she was educating us old-timers. So we retaliate by taking the Mickey out of her, because we can. hehehehehe!

You see we also get bolder when we get older (notice the clever rhyme?)and we don't hold our tongues any more, we may sometimes plant them firmly in our cheeks when we reply, but as I said: we have to get our Jollies, somewhere.

And do you know that when you get older, some things just aren't that important any more, 'coz you see we're nearer the end than the beginning, so if we forget to turn the capslock off, or make spelling mistakes, we're certainly not going to waste precious time by deleting and rewriting the whole lot. NAH! We've got more important things to do..... there's the next post to answer.... the next freebie to find.... the next email to read.... the next project to finish.... and now that we're all laughing so hard we've all got to rush to the loo or else we'll have to change our scanties and that cause something we no longer like to do, WORK!!!!

So please forgive us all if we sometimes forget to follow the rules, at our age we were probably the ones who MADE those rules and just like any politician, when you are the ones who made the rules, you don't have to follow them.

We are all really harmless little old ladies who enjoy each other's friendship and expect nothing but politeness, kindness, caring, love and support and sometimes a bit of good natured ribbing. :-))))))

OH, and most of us have some form of YDS.

Welcome to the Cute Family.
Hugs and roses, Meganne

It's an accepted fact and one of which we all should be aware since this is our way of communication in the cyber-arena.

Used sparingly and appropriately it can add jest to a message.

Used inappropriately it can be quite offensive and hurtful.

Yup--it means you are shouting. But if the Cutie isn't aware that is what it means, then I guess they are not shouting, they are just trying to communicate. Doesn't offend me one bit. As long as I can read the post and try to help, that is all that is needed.

Yes, usually, however caps are also used to emphasize (eg HAPPY BIRTHDAY!) excitement (eg GUESS WHAT?) and abbreviations (eg: LOL) .. also some of our Cuties have trouble reading the text here at times, and specifically request that caps are used when speaking to them :) xXx
