I do a test on a part of the material that doesn't show first before using. Also, I put clear nail polish on the underside of sewn on buttons and sometimes around the underside of the buttonholes. Please remember to do a sample testing as this could damage some garments.

Here is a pic of how I identify my needles.

Thank you for your handy tip. I use a coloured nail polish on the shaft of my ballpoint/stretch machine needles. I paint them while still in the pack. Then I know it is on my machine as they tend to break if you use them by accident on heavy fabric.
Also very good to hold screws that tend to come loose on your specticals.

I painted my sewing needles also but on the insert end and then they would not fit in the needle holder. The shaft is a much better place.

The only problem with using clear nail polish is that over time it will discolour and go very horrible dirty yellow -orange colour just like old sticky tape did.
You would bee better off using washable glue, which is exactly what Fray-Check / Fray Stopper is made of anyway.

I haven't had any problem with discoloration and I've washed and dryed many garments without any problem. The fray Check type products had to be reapplied after a few washings. I have used colored nail polish on darker items.

great for jewelry too, if you buy any cheap earrings, etc., and want them to last forever just give them a coat of clear fingernail polish.****

There are so many uses for nail polish. I've used it like you said on jewelry, filled in chips and scratches on porcelain appliances and our cars not to mention small cuts on my fingers. Works better than a bandage if your working in the kitchen around water.

great idea. Does it get hard plasticy (probably not a word) lumps? Do you water it down some?

It can get a bit hard if you use too much. I do one coat and let dry and see if another coat is needed. I use it from the bottle without thining it down. For me it depends on what I put it one as to how stiff I want it to get. I live in an isolated area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina (USA) and it is hard to go down the Mt. for supplies.

I don't live too far from you. We go to Boone NC at least once each year to get away. We borrow someone's house in the mountains. LOVE IT!!!

Thanks for the reply. I live about a half hours drive from Boone. Had a five month visit in Orlando and was glad to be out of the Mts. for the winter.
