Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong? When I embroider a T-shirt, it breaks often at the edge. What can I do about it?

I've heard 8 hrs. also, but I think it depends on how often you really use the machine. If you used it everyday, hours on end then it needs to be changed daily. If you use it maybe once a day, you can keep the needle longer. I keep a stock of them. I also use Schmetz.

Thank you for the many tips. You all are so nice. But now what the problem was I can not say. It worked. I have taken a new needle, now a ball point needle and I have the other layer, etc. Now it worked.
How long can I use a needle? How do I know that the needle is good, before anything in embroidery will broken? I use titanium needles.

I know it may seem a bit wasteful but I think I was told a long time ago to use a new needle every 8 hours or so.

I always use a new needle on each new project anyway.

Hope you can sort it all out soon.

Love Chris

P.S. I only use Schmetz needles

I agree with all you said Chris. At least every 8 hours, I also use new one for each project, and use Schmetz needles.

Maybe you have the T shirt too tight in the hoop. Just a thought

For the T-shirt, I use sticky stitch stabiliser, it is self-adhesive, and above I put a sheet of watersoluble as Solvy, all that in the hoop

A Sharp point needle can snag or cause wholes or runs in knit fabrics such as T-Shirts as it cuts the fibres of the fabric.

Use a Ball point needle to avoid this.
When a ball point needle goes into the fabric it separates the fibres and does not cut the fibres.

Use a Size 75/11 or 80/12 Ball point needle.

I can not exist. It is at edge of the embroidery. Since tearing the fabric of the T-shirt. But is is only small holes or cracks. Bad for a photo

Depending on your stitch count in the design you could use 2 layers of Fusible Poly Mesh ( No Show Mesh) which is a cut away stabilizer fused to the back of the shirt in a criss cross fashion. This will control the stretch of the shirt when you hoop it and when you stitch the design.
Hoop the shirt with the Fusible Mesh fused to the back.

Then float 1 layer of a medium weight Tear Away under the hoop to give good design registration.

Use 1 layer of the film type water soluble such as light weight Solvy stabilizer on the top of the shirt.
This will help the stitches to stay on top of the knit while you embroider.

If you have a baste stitch baste around the design area to hold all the layers together then stitch your design out.

Use a 75/11 or 80/12 Ball Point needle for knits type fabrics like T-Shirts.

Are you using a ball point needle to sew the design? If not a regular needle can cause a hole in the fabric. Also use cut away mesh on the back for the stablizer and if your still having a problem use some wash away on top. Make sure your design is not too dense also. Good Luck Hope this helps! Suzanne

Bei Jersey nehme ich (nach leidvoller Erfahrung :-(()
doppelte Lage Stabilizer unten, doppelte Lage Watersoluble

My question is the same? What breaks? Thread, needle?

I think she said the fabric is breaking I think she means teating or the thread is cutting it.

Sounds like to me that it is caising the material to frey at the edges of the design. If that is what you are saying, your needle is breaking down/cutting the threads in the T. I think you need to change your needle and keep trying until you find one that will sew on the material. Also check and make sure that your needle is not bent. It could also be scrubbing the side of the hole as it goes up and down. If ir is the least bit off and scrubs needle against metal, one or two stitches and the needle is messed up. Make sure it is not scrubbing as it goes up and down through the metal plate on the machine.

I do know how to spell but I am just about blind. I really need my eyes checked.

keeponsewing by keeponsewing 13 Jul 2010

I agree with you. It sound like the needle needs to be changed, if it is cutting the material. You probably need a ball point needle if you are working with Tshirts...
