table when Slippers came to check on me. I could never work alone with him. He jumped up on the sideboard so he could see what I was doing (and to jump over to help me if I needed it). He walked along the side board towards the candle happily flaming away. I was on the other side of the table, saw Slippers walking toward the flame, yelling at him to stop (when does a cat listen to anyone) trying to get around the table to him, and yes, up in flames he goes. Now I'm yelling for my husband, who is in the next room, scrambling to get to Slippers. Well I got to him, with fabric to wrap him in to smother the flames. He obviously thinks I have lost my mind and is trying to get away. I am still yelling for my husband, checking to see how badly burned Slippers is and thanking God the house didn't catch on fire. Now Rob appears asking what is wrong. You would think the burned fur smell would be a clue. Well, it turns out that thanks to Slippers being a long-haired cat, only his fur was singed on the edges. No permanent harm to anyone but me. I wouldn't burn another candle with him around.

And THAT is the reason why cats have NINE lives! LOL

Could have been bad, glad it was only his fur.

I am so glad Slipper and your house is OK. That could have really been a disaster. Now it is a funny story.

Sounds like he had a very lucky escape. One of my friends was very badly burnt about 15 years ago, she was wearing a indian cotton skirt. As she walked past a lit candle the skirt caught light and she went up like a torch. She was in hospital for about 3 months, had a skin graft or two and caught MRSA. I went to stay with her as she came out of hospital. She has never been the same and I have rarely lit a candle as I vividly remember the state she was in from her burns. You and your cat were very lucky. Somehow I have a SIL who is a fireman and sees too much devastation from candles

Hee hee hee, I'm certainly glad Slippers didn't get hurt! I replaced all my real candles with the 'flameless' battery operated kind for just this reason. Cats would never burn thier whiskers or paws, but oh, those tails! It's like they don't belong to them, and have a life of their own. I sympathize with you, 02kar!! Hugs, Marji

I switched over to those as well. I feel better that the grandkids can't start a fire accidently either. Those little flickering tealight ones are great in a frosted glass.

Poor little Slippers. Glad you caught him. How did he get the name Slippers? So cute. Judy
