When I was born Mom and Dad wanted to name me something longer to 'go with' our shorter last name. Since my paternal grandmother was French, they came up with Jacqueline, and used my GM maiden name Manyette, as my middle name. It is shared with a cousin and his daughter. When I was young, I learned to write my entire name, to encourage people to call me Jacqueline; it is usually shortened to Jackie, so I've been spelling it Jacqui, just for fun.
If there are some French cuties, who know of families with the name Manyette, I'd love to know of them also.

My grandfather on my father side named me Sally and my middle name Beatrix was my fathers mothers. My older sisters middle name is Mary after our mothers mother. Then my parents had twin girls and they do not have any middle names. I think as they had 2 more daughters they just decided one each would be enough. Funny how things work out. Sally

Well....... if it's true....... my mother came from a large family and had no dolls to play with but she used to pretend that bottles or pieces of wood were her dolls. She told me she always called them Alma. When I arrived she called me Alma, too. I guess she loved that name since I was her only daughter. I am certain that my father's only sister, named Alma, who died at the age of 11 had nothing at all to do with the choice - it was just coincidence.
My second name, Margaret, came about because when my father went to register me on the Births and Deaths Registry he wrote Margaret, as is, because he couldn't spell Marguerite, which I was supposed to be named after my French great-grandmother.
I always wondered why anyone would load a moniker like Alma onto a defenseless little babe but, thanks to the internet and what I've learned about names during the last few years, Alma is apparently quite a choice. Well........ that's nice to know after all this time, maybe 70 years!!!!

I could have been named Sophia (as in Loren)and been tall and gorgeous, or Audrey (as in Hepburn) and been slim and gorgeous, but here I am with the granniest figure you ever did see, not tall, not slim and definitely not gorgeous but, heck, I have a whole lot of fun with life.

They didn't have categories back then, I would call it more of a folklore song it is a very old one from the 1800's

My given names are Linda Marie. The Linda isn't after anyone , the Marie is after my Mom's sister. I liked the name Lynn better, so I have been called Lynn for as long as I can remember.

My parents lived in Leavenworth Kansas and would cross over to Missouri to shop. There is a town there called Beverly and my Mom said if she ever had a little girl she would name her Beverly because she liked that name.

Some interesting answers here! Mine is pretty boring: my mother is Diana and I'm named after her, only to make it as bit different she called me Dianne. I have to spell it out every time, because Dianne with two n's is very unusual in the UK. My middle name is Gwynneth, chosen by my father who was Welsh - I hated it as a child because nobody had ever heard of it, but I've grown to like it now. I called my three children by very ordinary names - Christopher, Andrew and Catherine, so that (as I thought) nobody could mess them up, but you should see how many ways they can spell Catherine!!

My mother really loved the movies so when I was born I received the names of her two favorite actresses: Carole (for Carole Lombard) and Leigh (for Vivien Leigh).

My real name is "Marie-Christine" as my Grand mother has DECIDED that all her grand children will have double name. Her name was Marie !! My parents were allowed to choice the second part !!The younger of my brother was 2 and half when I was born and coudn't prononce "Marie-Christine" but he said "Craty", so my nick name became Cathie (prononce "Catty" in French !). As far as I rember my family always called me Cathie exept when my Mum was upset with me !!
My brothers are called Jean-Paul, Jean-François, Jean-Sébastien and Pierre-Emmanuel. And my cousin are called Jacques-Olivier, Jean-Pierre and Jean-Philippe. I was the only girl but I enjoyed it !!

For me, it was so simple... My father was not satisfied to have a second girl. And he never had think of one girl name. My mother has some idea but my father was not receptive for them. And when he goes to registrer me he decided to give me the firt name of girl in the calendar on the days after my birth..
Mum likes the name choice but she say nothing because she do not want my father decided to changefor an other one!!!
I'm lucky that it was not a bad name! And I love my name.
My second name is Marie... everybody in my mother familly has this second name who significated that our parents offer us to The Mother. So all my brothers & sisters have it and my childrens and GD has it too...
Finally I was the Favorite Child of my father!!!!

I was to be named Peggy,,but my sister who was 4 at the time, kept saying Piggy.....so Mom had to think of a different name. I was born early and only weighed 3#4oz and was 12 inches long..Mom/Dad named me Darlene, because she said it was the closest to Darling as they could get!

I was to be named after my grandpa, Jerry David, but when I turned out to be a girl, they settled for Geraldine! I go by Gerry, however...except when my mom would be upset with me, then it was GERALDINE! Dad wanted my middle name to be Francis, but Mom didn't like the name, so took it off the birth cert. before it was registered! I do not have a middle name, but use my maiden name as my middle name.

Well, I would probably say that my mother and grandmother made my name up. I was going to be called something different, but my mother said that people would call me dilemma( I was to be called Delynna) - so there came my name. It is probably the only name in history that has an aposthrope in the correct spelling(D'Lonna). Anyway, after all of that - I was never called that, and go by my middle name, as does 4 of the 6 children my mother had. LOL My younger sister named her daughter after her 3 sisters, and my niece goes by that name now.

My father was a Scot and his family came from Lewis, an island in the Western Isles of Scotland. I was named after another island on the west coast where St. Columbus brought Christianity to Britain - Iona. But my middle name - the one I use on Cute - goes back to my maternal great-grandmother. She died in child birth and when asked to name her daughter - my grandmother - she said "if she lives it will be by the Grace of God" Although very weak my grandmother survived and was named Grace by her older sister. Our 3 daughters are all Grace but the two eldest have sons. However our youngest daughter has carried on the tradition so our 2 beautiful granddaughters - Mia Grace and Lucy Grace - are now the 5th generation.
I have never met another Iona but I know there are some out there somewhere.

I was named after a Chinese Grocery and Florist Shop in Vancouver, BC Canada. My dad was on the bus and it stopped at the store, when he saw the name he immediately liked it. It was called The Jirrell Dee. My Grandma didn't like Jirrell, so she changed it to Jerrill Dee. Don't know why she was allowed to change it but she did.

Well when my Mom went into labour with me, they did not have time to get to the hospital. There was a mid-wife that lived next door, who delivered me by the name of Yvonne. And my second name is that of my fathers Mother .... as my older sister has my other Grans name as her 2nd name. Hugs Yvonne

My name came from a popular song in the late 40's about all of the Charms about Linda. My middle name, Carol, is just a short version of my Mom's maiden name, Carroll. Yes, I am scot-irish and proud of it. Mom's youngest brother ran down our family tree before he passed away but I never got a chance to see it. It has been lost in the shuffle of dividing everything. I was not in the shuffle. heehee

Great question. My name has 2 stories. The first is that my mom always said she was going to name her kids Mickey and Steve. Being Catholic we had to have a Saints name so being first I got Michele (pronounced Michael) with Mickey being my nickname. My brother got Stephen. The second part is about my moms 1st big love. Never guess what his name is... Yep it was Mickey. You choose which story you like best.

this is fun :) My daughters name is Lindsey. When i was 18 years old i heard a little girl chatting on the radio and her name was Lindsey. From that time on, i loved the name and said i was going to name my little girl Lindsey. Well 13 years later and 3 boys(Joshua, Brandon and Cody) later i did. I got my Lindsey :) And you know she really suits the name and looks like a Lindsey. Good thing she likes the name.

The soap opera Search For Tomorrow came on air just before I was born. I was named after Mary Stuart's character, Joanne.

I hadn't thought of this in years. I remember my mother telling me she named me after a character in a story she was reading. I am adopted (bio mon was her cousin) so I assume the 2 of them collaborated. I am rare because I like my name. It is simple, yet not so popular that I am always running into another Karen.

I was named after a girl in a story book. They are books by Uncle Arthur. The story was Brenda's Skates. Hence the name Brenda but I always got called bloody Brenda it was always all through my life. even now if people talk good or bad about me they say I saw bloody Brenda today. don't know why it just happens never really a negative way though. it is just the Aussie culture i guess.

Lee, what a great question - one that hopefully some of have asked of our parents - Hehehe! My name is so different - I have never met another Shirlene in my life - I have heard of one or two - but not met one in person. My Mother was going to name me Shirley Ann, but for some reason - she talked to my Aunt, her sister and she told her that to lengthen it - so I became Shirlene Annette - I always disliked it while growing up - how many times can you tell people "My name is Shirlene, not Shirley" without them looking at you funny. But by the time I got in High School - when someone would use Shirley and not Shirley - I would just shorten their name - they started to figure it out, right away - Hehehe! Now - I am just as happy as ever, that my Mother named me Shirlene as anything else she might have thought up. Just for the record, none of my siblings have regular names, either.

I think Joann was a semi-popular name at the time. I have an aunt also of the same name, but she spells it Joan. My middle name comes from my Dad's favorite aunt who was named Marie, but we all called her Aunt Mayme.

Very neat way to get your name... I was actually on that show one time. They filmed it in the city we lived in, and I got to be on there. I have not thought about that in so long. BTW, my sister's name is LeAnne. Maybe that is where my parent's got it from. My dad named me. He just liked the name and insisted that I was going to be Lisa. Mom said it took her forever to come up with a name to go with it (She did not want to name me Lisa Marie like every other Lisa from my time).

That's a good one! My mom said it took her a month or more to name me. She just wanted something different and so did my dad,one day she was doing dishes with her best friend and they were discussing people they had met and voila! I finally had a name!!
Hugs, Nadyne
