and cut two pieces to double layer in my hoop. It did not go well. As it turns out, when I went to do my second try, the material on the roll changed from a plastic film to a fine netting. I USED THE PLASTIC WRAP that covered the roll to sew on!! Boy did I feel dumb! So I am ready to do my 2nd try at it, using the correct material, but in my discovery of figuring out that the wrapping was not the stabilizer, I used tear-a-way stabilizer on the bottom and the water soluable stabilizer on the top. The design stiched out fine, but the tear-a-way is there to stay! LOL

I am going to give it a 3rd chance, maybe to-night, I will post a pic when I finally have success! Just thought I would share my learning curve with everyone, so you all could have a laugh! Best Regards, Robin

hehehe... That sounds like something I might do... I've not done FSL by itself. I did however, use one of the fonts for napkins. I wondered why they were so stiff. hehehe... Hope the third time is a charm...:)

Hi robin
I don't do FSL before but I'm sure that it will not work out perfectliy first time.
So it is kind from you to share your experience with us.
And because there are a lot cuties with the same idea you all get a flower from me today.

Dear Robin,
You are not alone; we have all done similar things and have lived to tell the tale! I have not had as much sucess with FSL as I would like. Seems like it would be smart just to buy the premade things from Shirlene's website, which would help both of us...

Thanks for the laugh. We've all done something that we can laugh at (it's better than crying)! At least you can share it with us. Non-embroidery people just wouldn't understand, would they. Good luck on the next FSL.

Dear Robin, you are not alone, my first FSL, I wanted to use 2 layers (plastic type ones), and I tried to iron them together, oh, I don't need to tell that they melted in my iron. :)
Anyway, I'm so glad to know that I don't need to iron them :)
I'll be looking forward to seeing your FSL project!
Big hugs, Yoriko

Hi Robin
You are not alone.. It took me several attempts
to get FSL design right...
I even took to cheating and run them on some organza
and trimming around the edge..
Since being here and on some other groups I have learned so much..
one tip I did like for fsl is to double layer as you said and good quality wss, but lay the first sheet horizontal and the second sheet vertical
always trial and error lol
Big hugs from London

Robin, it could happen to any of us - the good thing is - you are on the learning curve. Can't wait to view your FSL in Projects, soon.

Robin we've all done something funny to mess up at one time or another when we are beginners. the key is to just laugh at yourself, share it with others who will get a chuckle out of it also & then just plow right in & try again. There have been things I've had to do several times to get it right & have learned to have a little patience as the result of it. *

This was a good story. My experience with FSL was that i thought the word Free meant Freebie! Well I learned my lesson. i have done some FSL and they all were beautiful. We all learn one step at a time.

I'm sure you really just meant to 'test sew' first without wasting the good stabiliser :) Nice to know we're not alone when we do these things :)

...could have happened to me as well. It is sooo
comforting to learn about other funny (and sometimes
frustrating) experiences and fights with the material.
However, in Germany we say: Aller guten Dinge sind drei.
Take care - Maria -))

Robin It is funny and I did get a chuckle because just last night I resized a design got all ready to do my design it sewed a few letters and I dis covered I had turned it over some how and every thing was back wards. so you see we all make mistakes.

Trial and error. We all have and continue to learn this way. At least you were being thrifty, using every bit supplied. Now don't give up because we get better and better the more we embroider. I almost needed someone to hold my hand the first time I embroidered something.

We live to learn! My first FSL was a butterfly and came out beautiful. I dissolved the stabilizer and the butterfly fell apart, the design was NOT FSL. Oh well, I immediately moved the design out of my FSL file to not repeat my mistake. Hugs

When you purchase stabilizer in a roll, carefully cut the label/instructions off, and insert into the tube for future reference. This way you know what you have.

This is an excellent tip for anything you buy on a roll that comes with directions margie. *

shirlener88 by shirlener88 18 May 2010

Yes, I do this all the time - then when someone asks where I bought it - I can also give them the info - but just taking it out and making a copy on my printer, too.

Third time is supposed to be the charm....so looking forward to seeing your first successful FSL.
You'll be so glad you didn't give up....but a warning for you Doing FSL is very very addictive....just ask Shirlene. BTW...thanks for sharing your experience with us as it was funny although I felt for you...we live and learn. Have a blessed day!

Robin, I love your post - cause it sounds like me!!! My first (and only FSL design), I kept forgetting to change the bobbin thread!!!. One day, I will try again! Thanks for sharing! Laura*

When doing FSL designs with different colors, I always wind a bobbin with each color and using a Q-tip put the wound bobbin on each spool of thread, this way I do not forget to change the bobbin color. Margie Pink

Well my first FSL was a mess, the WSS I used was not heavy enough so I damaged the whole project. Hope your WSS is heavy enough because you set it's like a fine netting. but every time we do something new, we learn. Thanks for sharing. and for sure ; you're not the only one who doesn't succeed the 1st time.but keep on trying I'm possitive it will work.
good luck.hope to see the succesfull project soon.

You might want to try stitching out your design on just the two layers of the WSS. LOL Isn't it wonderful that we can all laugh and learn together? Thank you so much for sharing. ***

At least you are not giving up! I'm sure you will love what you are doing when you use the correct stablizer. Yes, for FSL you need need water soluble stablizer on all layers that you use. Sometimes we learn more from our mistakes. Good luck on the next try. FSL is beautiful!
