Family, a question of wonder? When you hang your Christmas stockings, do you point the toes to the left or right? Thanks.

Hmmmm! A very serious question indeed.

Since we don't have a mantle and we don't have any stairs,
No kiddies that abide here, and stockings? No one wears.
I'm afraid to disappoint you, but there's no answer from me,
Other than all our pressies, go straight into the tree.

Gosh it's that Christmas spirit sneaking into my glass already. HIC!

Such a cute question and I enjoyed reading all the post..So now I just have to jump in and contribute...I use to adorn our staircase with all the stockings of our entire family..children and grandchildren..I would always have the toes pointing as if they were descending the stairs..As the family grew (and still growing) I ran out of stockings and have since moved (no stairs now) so I just adorn our mantel with 1 per family and fill it with goodies to share.. Also wanted to say that as a child my oldest sister bought a book for my brother and me, "Christmas Around the World" and that year we learned of the shoes being put out for santa to fill..well we did just that on christmas eve..and got our stocking and shoes filled..double delight!!! My sister still recalls those glorious days gone by...What an uplifting Question..thanks for the smile...*4u

Thank you for jumping in. I enjoyed your childhood story very much. Sometimes it is fun to remember back. You kids were pretty smart to do your double-dippen, stocking, and shoes. Haha!! H&*.

I always like to hang mine to the left. Maybe it's something to do with the way we read from left to right. I'm not sure.

By the way love the website - I just had a look at the handcrafted Santas. Some of them are over $3,500! But what a piece of artwork.

Love and blessings Chris

Isn't it strange how our minds will extend beyond one or two things we learn? Thanks. H&*.

If there is a tradition - that we don't know about - perhaps - we should learn and share it around the world - because - even the designers do it differently - here are two pictures from the same issue a magazine - that show them in different directions. Hehehe! *4U

Not sure if there is a proper or a rule for doing so, I never thought about it before.

With the size of my families, I know there will be more then 4 stockings. Thank you, I think they would look very nice this way. H&*.

When watching old propaganda films, you will notice that the soldiers are running from left to right ever when attacing (and winning of course).
As far as I know this is the reason for the american flags sewed to the uniforms are designed the "wrong" way- to simulate this forward rush.
I think our brains are programmed that way (from reading and writing).
So if hanged with toes to the left the stocking will give this optimistic increase up to the heel, a share index looks better this way too. ;-)
And by the way, this sock thing is no tradition here- we use our whole shoes to get filled by santa.
Yummy. ;-)

So you are telling me the toe should go to the right for the rush? How do you use your whole shoe? Are your shoes just lined up on the floor for Christmas Eve? Interesting. H&*.

Must be a let down if you have small feet.Just had to add this...hehe!!
Regarding the stocking thing we usually have one on either end of the mantel..toes pointing in,then any others are added on either end with the toes pointing the same way (hope this makes sense!) Hugs and ***

I have never had to worry about small feet, however, the children would. Your answer makes sense, thank you. Hugs.

I put the design showing, so I have no idea which way they are facing. I would think all manafactures would put the design on the same side. I would venture to say, to the left but could not be sure without taking down the Christmas decorations and I can not get to them. Sorry, I was not any help! Linda F.

We have always pointed them to the left. I don't know why.

Yes, but also don't know why!

dlmds by dlmds 08 Nov 2009

This crossed my mind because of seeing them on a matel, I thought all going one way would look better then some left and some right. H&*.
