How about some felt flowers with button holes & buttons in the middle of the flowers to practice buttoning.

How about making a little bird with a nest. When the nest is lifted you can see little bird eggs

Here I googled the german item and here you have a list of "Fühlbücher"- ("touch books") covers which may be an inspiration.
Animals with fur, clothing with zippers and bows to bind, some with vinyl windows filled with pearls, cars with rough paper wheels, some pages are sandwiched with foil inside, so they crackle when touching it. Some have a squeeking item added inside the sites. Possibilities galore! Love this project.

Everyone's ideas are giving me new fresh ideas and I think I'll add a couple of these to my Christmas list . . . do I have enough time? Thanks to jrob for the link to the activity books.

Molly Mine at OregonPatchworks has several books on her page. You could look at them and get lots of ideas. Be sure to scroll all the way down, there are at least 6 or more.;)

I made one years ago fora new niece that did not like to stay quiet in church. I put an apple that had the zipper and inside was a worm. Also a Mother Hubbard's shoe that had a lace - and it was great. Boy, had I had my embroidery machine back then I could have made some great designs for this. Good luck with this, and hope you post your completed proget.

I just went and pulled out the one I made for my daughter (would you believe 40 years ago??) and I have a church where you open the doors and see people inside & a string with a bell to ring; a teepee with a zipper and a feather inside; a clock with movable hands and numbers to tell time; flowers buttoned on to the stems; an apple tree with snaps and a basket full of apples to snap on; a hand to slide her hand in; a whale with Jonah who slides in and out of the mouth; a sneaker to lace and tie; a fuzzy bunny with a moving eye and a butterfly in the sky; shapes that button on (you could mark the area so the shape is matched to the figure); a pig with a tail to curl; and a pocket with a comb and mirror.

Maybe besides learning to use Velcro, you could do things where they could put different pieces on, or move pieces. Since I have a kitten on my lap, I'm thinking in those terms, hee hee hee. Like a mother cat, with kittens in a basket. The kittens could go drink milk from the mother, or from a saucer if the former is not to your taste. Also by way of kittens, the site All Granny's Girls has a free kitten paperdoll with several hats. You wouldn't necessarily have to make it a paperdoll, could just embroider it, and cut the hats out to velcro on kitty's head? Embroider a pea pod, and they could move the 'peas' into it and stick them with velcro? If I'm not mistaken, the hook part of the velcro will stick pretty well to flannel material, so you wouldn't have to put real velcro all over the pages. Just some thoughts, this book sounds like fun for your little ones! Hugs, Marji

I thought they would be great for waiting at the dr. office or traveling in the car or in church.

americangirl by americangirl 13 Sep 2009

I meant yarn. LOL
I think this is a great idea for all these places.
You could make a pocket for little toys, like cars for the boys.

The ladybug would be perfect for Adelaides. Since I have 1 girl and 2 boys i will have to make some of the pages gender different. Thanks

Marie, I had that set, too. The little one that I babysat - just loved it.
