Ruth u opened a can!!! What a response. I live in Johannesburg and Cape Town in SOUTH AFRICA. I read ur response to Suzette from Botswana and yes, there r people in the worldwho cant be believe there's white people in SA and that the lions r still roaming the streets. I experienced this on a recent visit to the UK. AND I agree with Babsie - all the Cuties close to each other should organise a get-together. I nominate Babsie as the organiser. Greetings from a sunny but cold South Africa

I hail from Hubbard, Ohio USA. Born in Maryland, lived in Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania (GO STEELERS!!), then here in Ohio (still GO STEELERS!!). It is pretty interesting that for as long as I've been active on this site, I never stopped to think of where everyone might be located. Wow - we span the entire world! Kinda neat huh?

Moved to Newtown in Sydney, met my husband & moved to St. Peters, to Campsie, Canterbury, Ashfield (inner west of Sydney) then had 2 girls, moved to Windsor and had another girl, NSW (outer north western Sydney), moved a couple of times around the Hawkesbury area, NOW I live at Gorokan, on the Central Coast to be closer to my mum. We hope to stay here for quite a while now after doing the rounds!
Oh, and now my oldest girl has started with her kids, my first grandson arrives in December.

Regina, lovely to hear from you! You certainly have done the rounds, but I do know Penrith and Windsor. My Husband was posted to Richmond RAAF base when we were first married. We lived in a little flat at Kurrajong Heights, and used to get around in a little grey Mini that used to break down at the drop of a hat. They made sensational Apple Pies at Bellbird Tearooms. We loved going to Weismans Ferry for a drive, very picturesque. I love the photo of your frangipanni, they are my favourite flower. When we were in Singapore I saw one that was almost organge, and the perfume is so beautiful. A *4u, not a lovely but with love, cheers Ruth

This is fun Ruth,
My Mother's name was Ruth a good Biblical name.
Another Southern USA girl here. I was born In Southern California in San Jose lived in several of the others States before coming to Arkansas and have lived here since 1965. I too have close European roots with my Paternal grand parents being from Ireland.
I live in the Ozark foothills in the community of Rabbit Ridge (pop.34)I have a Bee Branch,AR(pop 343) address and a Damascus,AR (pop 487) phone number and live closest to Center Ridge,AR (pop465).
I used to think that no one town wanted us but the truth is they all wanted just a little piece of us!HA!
We have a quiet little farm of 40 acres with a caboeable creek that runs along the mountainside that is chock full of fish and wildlife such as black bears, foxes, deer and turkeys.
We were Dairy farmers for over 25 years but now we just sit back and enjoy nature along with a huge vegetable garden.
Our summers are usually very hot and humid and are winters mild and we rarely get a measurable snowfall that lasts more than a day or two but when we do it is breathtaking!!
This is our creek during the last big snow.
Hugs, Kathy

I have a friend that lives in Conway, out near Toad Suck and Pickles Gap! Don't you just love the colorful names!! I know the story of how Pickles Gap got it's name, but do you know anything about Toad Suck??

grafiau by grafiau 29 Jul 2009

You Guys are amazing, when I first asked this question, I was really hoping that no one would be offended and think I was being too inquisitive. To find so many people who are happy to tell me about there home, and send me photos is awesome, I love them all, its like a huge geography lesson. Thankyou for taking the time. I especially love your creek, cheers Ruth

hogfan by hogfan 29 Jul 2009

Awe the Story of Toad Suck! Toad Suck was a small town along the Arkansas River where the barges and Sailors would stop. There they would drink or "suck" up all the beer and other Spirits until their bellies would swell up like big "toads"
The locals soon got into the habit of calling the tavern Toad Suck and it stuck!! When Bill Clinton was Governor he went on Johnny Carson and plugged it as one of the "Must Do" events in Arkansas.
And Miss Ruth thank you for your comment about out little creek it is one of the reasons we bought this place, in one of your other comments you mention another Panama well I am not sure about that one but we do have a lot of towns and cities named after other famous cities and countries right here in Arkansas like Germany, Paris, Damascus, Little Italy,London, Scotland, England, Moscow
Jordan,Palestine, Jerusalem and others that I can't remember, you can travel to Europe so to speak and never leave the state!
Gerryb, I don't know much about it But Bee Branch got it's name because the settlers stopped to rest under a big tree here and a hornets nest fell from a branch and stung everyone forcing them to stay for a while to heal and they made it home. HA!

gerryb by gerryb 30 Jul 2009

That is so funny! Never know the story behind so many little towns! Tks for the info...and now I know about Toad Suck!

grafiau by grafiau 30 Jul 2009

I think you should give those hornets some sort of posthumous award, it may have been divine intervention that encouraged them to sting either way they did you a favour a little town and your creek. Awesome. Ruth

I am a Georgia girl! I was born in Macon, Ga. and my parents moved to Meridian, Mississippi when I was 3 months old. We moved back to Macon when I was 12 and I lived there until I got married. I then moved to Swainsboro, Ga. where I lived for 17 years. Most of my Dad's family is in that area. My job transfered me to Sandersville, Ga (The Koalin capital of the world). I lived there for close to 25 years and my health and my son forced me to move to the Atlanta area (where my son lives)so I would be closer to him. I do not like it up here away from my family and friends but the Dr's are just wonderful! I would never have moved up here on my own but I am close to my only son and getting old,62. I guess I am where I need to be. There is one thing for sure, if you need it , you can find it , in this part of the country! You may have to call around to find it but I have never seen so many places to shop in my life! I am a creature of habit and still want to go back to the places that I am used to shopping but do not have that option any longer. In Ga. you have to bear the weather! You can have some of the hottest, muggyiest, summers ever and the winters can be brutal at times. Then you can turn around and beautiful summers and mild winters. That is all in the Lord's hands! In the Atlanta, you can find some of the biggest company headquarters in the world to the tinest nightclub and all sorts of places that most people would not want to go. The traffic is horrible up here at times and it is hard to get around if you do not know where you are going. I have a local map and a GPS in my car and so far, I have had no problems. I go where I want to go but just not during the peak hours! If you miss a turn or can't get in the right lane, you can get miles off from where you need to be before you can get turned around. To me, that is fun, but I have a friend that panics when that happens to her. I am 3 minutes from my Dr and the Piedmont Hospital so I have it made! I do miss my friends and family but we talk daily! Everytime I get on Cute, I DO realize just how small the world is! I love to hear about and from our friends from other countries.

I looked East Tennessee Valley up on Wikepedia, and it had a nice photo of the valley taken from the top of the Cumberland Plateau, it looks very nice land with a river. Is it farming/grazing land. You know the other nice part of asking this question is I am find out about parts of the world, I dont know and things only locals can tell me about. Thankyou Ruth*4u

gerryb by gerryb 28 Jul 2009

Ruth, I'm so glad you asked that question! We really ARE a world wide group! Love it! To answer above question: there is farming & grazing land in E.Tenn., but also industry. Univ. of Tenn main campus is in Knoxville, and most people here are football crazy! In the fall every where you see orange & white..and that's not just the orange leaves either! The Tenn. Valley Authority is here all along the Tenn. River (TVA) and due to the dams built to control the river, there are a lot of lakes & water sports. Come on to Tenn. & I'll show you around from the mountains to the lakes! By the way, Dolly Parton is from the area about a 30 min drive from my house. Many of her songs are written about her life here.

lflanders by lflanders 28 Jul 2009

Seviere County and the surrounding area in Tn. is the most beautiful country in the world to me. I came very close to buying a home in Wears Valley about 7 yrs ago but I changed my mind at the last minute. I think the Lord was looking after me because it was not long before I had to have major surgery and I have not been able to work since then. I would have been a long way from home and family and would have had no income but disability. That would not have made the payments on the home that my son and I had our heart set on! That was also about the time he moved out on his own.(When I had to have surgery & could not go back to work) I have not been able to go back up there since then. He goes all the time but I get left behind! When I get to Gatlinburg, I feel like I am home. The closer to Pigeon Forge I get the more I want to stay forever. I do not even mind the traffic. We went 3/4 times a yr for many yrs. and my very best friend I met up there. She lives in Ohio now and I am still in Ga. but we stay in touch! I went to the door of her craft store in P.F. and had 3 Pekingese with me. She came out and told me to bring them on in. She sat in the floor and played with them. They adored her! 2 of those 3 are gone now and the baby of the 3 is 13 and has cancer. She is not doing well and I cry daily for her. I have had her since the day she was born. I also adopted a 2 yr old Pekingese on Petfinders.com in Oct of 2007. She is my wild child! Patty is a riot going somewhere to happen. Very loving and very smart but has a wild streak! Bebe has always been calm, sweet, loving and a very gentle soul. She has a stubborn side and does just what she wants to do. She is not bad but has a mind of her own. They are both Mama's girls. They will attack a strange male that tries to come in the door unless I tell them to behave and that it is okay. Bebe loves Tn. as much as I do! She will never see it again. I will have to have her put down before too long. I will not let her live in pain. The situation is getting very bad now. These girls are my children and it is killing me. I have sat here and gotten homesick for Tn. You will have to enjoy it enough for all of us!

We are right between beautiful Lake Tahoe and San Francisco (about 2 hr drive to either location) The nearest airport is in Sacramento, and it's only an hour flight to San Diego or 45 minutes to Los Angeles. We live in the foothills, so sometimes we get snow in the winter. We love this location. The town is very small, but large towns are only about a 30 minute drive. Thanks for asking!

Hubby and I were up there for a conference at the end of may, we stood watching the fountains not realising we were standing on the flat hole in the ground type, until this jet of water shot up my trouser leg. Your right Sue, I was born in the UK Somerset actually, but spent most of my primary school years in Shropshire. My parents migrated to Aust when I was 12, and I have been here ever since.

Appleton, Wisconsin, USA is where I am from. A town with a population of about 75,000. It is small enough that everyone knows their neighbors but big enough that there is a lot to do.
We get to enjoy all four seasons here. We average about 45 inches of snow in the winter and it is very cold here (that is not so wonderful). In the spring it is wonderful to see the flowers pushing their way through the frozen ground and the leaves budding on the trees after the long cold winter. In the summer the temperature can top 90 degrees Fahrenheit and we have a lot of humidity to go with the high temps, so we get to complain about the cold and about the heat! In the fall the color changes are beautiful.

Isnt funny how we all complain about the weather where we are, but mostly we cant bear to leave. Usually there are things we love so we tolerate the weather. we dont get the snow here, but i CAN BEAT YOUR TOP TEMP. Over summer we frequently get highs over 40 celcius, thats about 104 degrees in farenheit. We had a week solid of 44 and 45 last febuary, it was a little warm!lol Cheers Ruth *4u

I was born in Whittier, CA, grew up in a little logging town called Blue Lake, in Humboldt County, in N. Calif. and have lived all over the Bay Area as well as So. Calif.

I now live in beautiful Scappoose, Oregon, up on the Columbia River about 30 miles west of Portland. Small town, almost 6,000, and I have the perfect view of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood as well as the tip of Mt. Rainer. I think I love fall time up here the best. That is when all the water fowl (geese, ducks and swans) start migrating; the leaves on a lot of the trees start turning their lovely colors. Sometimes it looks like the whole hillside is on fire because of the red and yellow hued leaves in amongst the blue-gray and green-grays of the evergreens. Quite breathtaking.
Right now we have a bald eagle family patrolling our neighborhood, looking for an easy meal of someone's pet. arrgh!! gotta call Snappy in or he will be their snack.

We have a blue lake in Sth Australia in a town called Mount Gambier. It is the most irradescent bright blue water, in a extinct volacnic crater. They do a lot of pine logging and paper making in that region. The pine forests are home to the tailed black cocatoo. Lucily they eat pine nuts and not the local cats. Those bald eagles are magnicent creatures though. *4u Ruth

Hi Ruth,
I live in "Almost Heaven" West Virginia in a small community named Sarah Ann. I live within a quarter mile from the a grave yard where the famous "Devil" Anse Hatfield, of the Hatfield and McCoy Fued, and his family is buried and whose granddaughter this community was named after. Living about 50 yards from me is one of his grandsons. We're a coal mining community which also has great fishing rivers, The Hatfield and McCoy ATV Trail which has thousands of visiters yearly from all over the country riding their ATV's through our beautiful mountains. Our state also has the New River Gorge Bridge, the highest vehicular bridge in the Americas and second highest in the world. We have all four seasons, our winters not so severe any more. We have many various critters, bears, dear, fox, and a large verity of birds.

I'm from Panama, Okllahoma. A small little podunk town 30 miles west of the Arkansas border. We call it GOD's country. Lots of lakes, fishing ponds, tall trees and game. Have mountains all around us and 6 miles from us is the worlds tallest hill. It lacks an inch being a mountain. LOL 20 miles SE is the rune stone from when the vikings came over.
Our state is known for oil, the wildlife refuge where the buffalo roam, Ft.Sill, great indian chiefs, Bell Star and lots of western history.
I was a military brat, born in california, moved to missouri, arkansas, oklahoma, washington state, gorgia and back to Oklahoma.

Like Brighton England, here in Australia I think there is one in just about every state, yet they are differant to the english one, we have beaches with sand Englads brighton is a pebble beach , Funny , Cheers Ruth *4u

When ordering things, everyone assumes its the Panama canal. LOL We used to be Brick town, our football team was the grasshoppers. When our field house burnt, Arkansas donated their old uniforms, the town changed names and we are now the Panama Razorbacks.... with a green eye.
When we moved back to Oklahoma, I lived in a small town called Rattan. I thought my parents had brought me to hell. 30 miles from the nearest "big" town that had a movie theater, store, drive in and tire shop. But as I got older, I wanted that seclusion. McCurtain, Ok 18 miles from here was my first stop. it had a convience store, school and postoffice. My kid thought i had brought him to hell. but he soon loved the fishing and hunting, swimming at the 100 ft falls and hiking in the woods.

Suzette, its great to hear from you, Botswana, a bit like Australia is a bit of an enigma, in that the rest of the world knows very little about us. Hi, Ruth, will it unstick your beak if I tell you I live just outside Erie, PA, USA? Hee hee hee. Erie is right on Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, and is about halfway between Buffalo, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio, if you have a map. My closest town is Wattsburg, a tiny place with a combination gas station/general store. Oh, and a hair dresser, and a diner, and a branch bank. If it boasts 2000 people, I'd be surprised. We're in farm country here. I myself have 8 acres, with woods, a beautiful stream in a valley, a deer herd that lives there, wild turkey flock, and the assorted squirrels, chipmunks, and woodchucks (groundhogs). It's like heaven here. Isn't it just amazing that we can chat halfway around the world? Wonderful!! Wish we had a map, so we could all mark our places on it. Maybe some computer guru could discover one on the internet? Would be cool. Hugs, Marji

The Steelers are my favorite NFL team. I just loved Bill Cowher when he was the coach. Lynn

grafiau by grafiau 27 Jul 2009

Somehow the "Steelers" sounds just a little better than the "Crows" which is our team in the AFL, so for those SA Aussie Rules fans, GO THE CROWS! LOL Ruth

My husband and I have dream to live in Pittsburgh and we hope some day we will. GO STEELERS!!!!!!

spider3 by spider3 04 Aug 2009

Where-abouts in Pittsburgh? I'm in Ohio now but used to live in (little) Boston (near Elizabeth Twp). No team like the STEELERS!!! I commuted from here to Murrysville for 3 years (2 hour drive one-way - interesting turnpike adventures in the winter :) which of course made the trip longer).

Hi , I live in St. Catharines, Ontario,Canada Population 126,000. We are 15 miles from the Famous Niagara Falls. This area is called the Niagara Peninsula. The fruit belt of Ontario. The other thing we are famous for is the Welland Canal. Ships can go from Lake to Lake thru eight locks to lift them up and down the escarpment. Lynn.

That presents such a picturesque image Lynn, I love boat travel, I did a length of the Rhine in Germany through the various locks and in to the Maine river, the northern hemishphere is so green in comparison to Australia. *4u Ruth

I've been to Nottingham England, but not the Maryland USA one, whats it like? Ruth

Well, I have lived here all my life, and to me it just seems like an average suburbian town. I guess the closest we get to anything exciting, is the Baltimore Harbor, and Ft McHenry where Our National Anthem was written by Francis Scott Key.

Where are you from in Adelaide Ruth? Love Chris

Broadview, It is 5kms north of The main CBD of Adelaide, an older suburb with an interesting array of architecture. As it originally had very large house blocks, it is undergoing the urban infill trend so there is a mix of old (lol nothing is that old in Adelaide) and new. A nice place to live, i am close enough to the cafes of Nth Adelaide for latte's but far enough from the city to be comfortable. *4u Ruth

As a young girl I lived in Glenelg and moved to Reynella when I was 10. When I got married I lived in Norwood just off the parade. Then left Adelaide in 1974. I love to go "home" occassionally - took Mum in January (the hottest it had been in 70 years!)

I got married in El Paso, and lived in the Houston area (The Woodlands) for several years. Does that count?

I had a bumper sticker on my truck that read: "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here just as soon as I could."

I feel left out guys, I dont come from there and I havent had the chance yet to visit Texas, it seems such a friendly place. *4 each of u, cheers Ruth

Ruth, curious or 'sticky beak' - it is still a great question. I live in Riverdale, Utah in the USA. Isn't it wonderful that we can become friends from across the miles and through all these air waves or cables? I hope you start a page with all the answers - then you can share it with us. Hehehe!

Shirlene, how far away are you from Ogden Bay - I notice you are near Salt Lake.

Love Chris

shirlener88 by shirlener88 26 Jul 2009

Chris, the great Salt Lake is right across from where I live - Ogden Bay is a little north of us - I live between Ogden and Roy - north of Salt Lake City, of coarse. SLC, Bountiful, Farmington, Kaysville, Layton, Clearfiled, and Roy - then Riverdale and Odgden - as you travel North on the map from Salt Lake City. We have lots of Snow Skiing in the winter - on the other side of the mountains.

grafiau by grafiau 26 Jul 2009

Maybe we should do that Shirlener, It seems I am not the only one who is curious, given the responce in such a short time, Its loverly that through craft and the internet you get to meet like minded people across the world. *4u
Cheers Ruth
