The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are made using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a machine which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots - most people probably know this already. What you may not know and should know is the following: Once the carrots are cut and shaped into cocktail carrots they are dipped in a solution of water and chlorine in order to preserve them. (this is the same chlorine used in your pool). Since they do not have their skin or natural protective covering, they give them a higher dose of chlorine.

You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator for a few days, a white covering will form on the carrots. This is the chlorine which resurfaces. At what cost do we put our health at risk to have esthetically pleasing vegetables?

Chlorine is a very well-known carcinogen, which causes Cancer.. I thought this was worth passing on.
Pass it on to as many people as possible in hopes of informing them where these carrots come from and how they are processed.
I used to buy those baby carrots for vegetable dips. I know that I will never buy them again!!!!

Yikes, I knew about the lettuce thing and so do not buy packaged lettuce anymore, but didn't know about the carrots...thanks!! There's so many bad things out there ...high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils (palm, soy and cottonseed), aspartame and the list goes on and on..

About 15 years back they used to do the same thing to the lettuce on salad bars, but it was with a different type of preservative. My sister was extremely allergic to it. I worked at AT&T and we had to do "Safety" presentations. I researched it, and did a report on that and told her. SHE STOPPED going to the SALAD BAR and had no further problems. Looks like we are going backwards. Thanks for the heads-up.

There is no way that chlorine can be that harmful. It is in all the drinking water that is treated at any treatment plant or in the bottled water you purchase at a store. No matter what you do, if done in large enough doses it is harmful. These things are checked on lab rats who are given doses that are thousands of times higher than what a human could consume in a life time. If chlorine were that harmful, it could not be used to purify anything or be used in our water plants. Many times I have been on or been sent to snopes about computer viruses and they have turned out to be false. I never go there.

Mercy, this is scarey.<br />I wonder if this also goes for "Organic baby carrots"?

I just checked the Snopes - and this message contains both true and false info. The white "bloom" is not chlorine re-surfacing.
