Sorry to hear about your computer and loosing all your designs. I have noi experience with Vista, I still use XP so I cannot give you an advise in that. I save all my designs on an external drive and on a memorystick. That is easy to take with you when needed. I hope you can find a solution soon.

I looked on the internet what company could still supply XP, cost slightly more, but much cheaper than buying new software!
I bought in the UK and used Dabs.
I think they specially put XP in Vista computer, but
was pleased as can be and all works fine.
Also back up designs on 2 External hard drives.
good luck.

You may want to check when you buy a new computer. I have been told that since Vista is such an unpopular Operating System (and trust me....it's for a unpopular for a good reason!) Anyway...I have been told that you actually have an option to get new computers with XP loaded on them. I don't know this for sure, but it's worth a try!

Sometimes it's a lot less expensive to buy a licensed copy of XP... I bought one at Fry's a couple months back for around 120.00, and you can use your existing software.

I would enlist the services of a good tech to see if they can retrieve the files and invest in a portable hard drive you can routinely back your data up to. Wish you the best Erma... I know you're probably so heartbroken right now! :-( Hugs, teri

sorry about yoiur puter crash but now when you get another one spend out just a litle more for an external hard drive, and keep ALL your work and designs on that. not only wil it keep your computer running faster but you can simply unplug from the USB and take to any other computer and it will read it. your main computer may onloy have 60-80 GB but an external one can have over 280 GB. so more than enough to take all the designs in safety. i also keep all my project photos on my external drive. if a friend wants to see what i am doing i simply plug in.
hope this will help. annie in the Uk

Erma, I am so sorry to hear about the PC crash - sometimes - a could technician can retrieve files - even after a crash - so check that out. Then when you purchase a new PC or upgrade - do it with the Windows XP Pro Media Edition rather than the Vista - as most embroidery sites have not done the work that is necessary to work with the Vista, at this time. Good luck!

Bkd, take the old computer, the one that crashed and just purchase a new harddrive and a copy of windows xp. My sister bought a new laptop with vista, hated it. She reformatted her computer and replaced the vista with xp. I know that windows is tring to get rid of xp but so many people are having problems, that I don't think that their going to yet. If you go to Tiger Direct you can get harddrives fairly cheap and I don't know about windows xp. My brother bought a copy at Walmart for around 75 dollars. I do hope this helps.

Also, if you know anyone that is computer savy they may be able to pull the info off your crashed harddrive. The best thing to do is check a local High School or Vocational School that teaches computers and they may do it for you like as a school project.

I also have the Bernina v4. I have asked Bernina home office support about it. They worked for the longest on a patch and have not been able to come up with one. I am also looking for a computer and looking at Dell (which is what I have now). They offer XP with their computers as so many people and businesses also are having problems with Vista. I have read the there is suppose to be a new XP version coming out for this reason. I am having trouble also with every thing running weird and really slow but trying to hold on till then and if I have to will go back to Dell for my next computer with the original XP version. I asked two different Bernina shops about Acer as it came free at one time when the v5 came out. Neither of the places liked it nor use it any more. Sure hope you get it all fixed up and running again.

Some computer stores like BestBuy will sell you a computer with XP however for some dumb reason they charge more. You could also try a used computer shop, make sure it's reputable and they provide a warranty and support. If that doesn't work and you're stuck with Vista, see if there's and upDate(should be free)for your software.

Thanks I tried that but i dont have the money they want for the computer. I have tried to contact Bernina and they just say they don't have a upgrade you have to buy the new software which is around 1500.00

An upgrade is a new version of the software. An update is a revision to the version you have. Check their website for an update, if and when you get that new computer. Also, check with the computer dealer; there is a feature in vista that let's you run a program as though it's in a previous operating system.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was in a similar situation a few months back. Luckily my embroidery was on a separate hard drive, However with my digitizing software, unless the same fonts were installed the designs didn't work. Perhaps a computer whiz will be able to get your designs back. worth asking. I back up everything!!!(NOW!)

What ever you do buy back up designs. I put mine in about three different places. Everything goes on to a memory stick. These are cheap. Then I get stuff onto a CD and designs go onto another computer too.
