I'm new at all this. I've seen designs for bookmarks. Can someone tell me what to sew them out on. I can figure out the FSL but am not sure about the others. What material do I use? Thanks.

I think you already have your answer for the bookmarks but I would like like to welcome you aboard! I think you will learn to love this site very fast! I am rather new and I got addicted in just a couple of days. You will find that everyone is very nice and ready to help you. You will discover embroidery sites that U never knew existed. I have found that everyone here is very talented..well most. I can't say so much for myself. I try & I never give up until I get it like I want it. I now spend more time here than I do sewing! You will learn alot & find alot of great people from all over to back you up when U need it! Linda in Ga

Thanks ever so much for your kind words of encouragement. I am already finding out so much. Not only sewing and embroidery but am also honing my very limited computer skills.

I have made bookmarkers with Bridal toulle...the 4 inch wide that comes on a roll in the craft dept....it double it and just stitch the design, then trim close to the satin stitch...Still soft and plyable:) Works for me!

Helo Mary, and welcome to the cute website, they are all lovely people, and you will love it here.
I use organza, and also use the same colour on the bobbin thread as above, as mpo does. On organza you use 2 layers of wash away stabilizer, and treat it just the same as in FSL. When the stabilize is washed away, it is a lovely bookmark ( I put stabilizer on top and bottom

I use felt and before the last border stitching I put calico under the hoop so the stitching doesn't show

I have done it on felt, too, but instead of putting fabric on the back, I use the same colour in the bobbin as on the top.Double sided bookmark.

Thanks. This is a good tip.

For those that are Freestanding you use water soluble stabilizer. If they are just regular design patterns for bookmarks I usually use a medium weight felt fabric.

Dear Kezza
They are generally rectangular with a border and a design in the centre. Do I use ordinary material? then cut them out? I'm pretty hopeless!!

kezza2sew by kezza2sew 08 Mar 2009

by bordery if you mean a satin stitch finish, I sometimes use felt or a heavier fabric than cotton. With any satin stitch edge just be carefull not to cut the stitching as you go... hope that helps.
