I really enjoyed seeing the ice skating pictures, and reading all the comments, thank you so much!! When we were kids, my father would take us to the frozen Lake Erie, and shovel the snow off the ice for us to skate. Sometimes, when there had been no wind, the ice was a foot thick and so clear you could see through it like glass. Happy memories, thanks!! Hugs, Marji

we don't have the very cold winters like we used to but it does have it's own charm.I'm a sun lover and would love to be in Florida at the moment Jo

We don't have very cold winters too, that is why this is so special. When the cold weather stays and the ice is thicker we have an "elevencitytour on iceskates" in the n orths of the Netherlands in Friesland. But I don't think we get there this year.

That would be great to just go out your door to go skating. One of my fondest memories of my father was that he spent a lot of time taking us ice skating at a pond by the local school. He and a couple other fathers would shovel off the snow and flood it with a thin layer of water to make it smooth. We had a great time.

Great memories. In our old house we had a water down the backgarden. In the summertime the children went there in a small rubberboat. In the winter the firebrigade came to put more water on top adn at the other side of that water was a school. All the children from the school went on the ice to skate. Marvelous

I have not been on ice skates since we lived in North Carolina, and that was at a rink in the center of a mall. I skated on outside rinks when I was a young girl in Nebraska - oh that has been so many years ago. I would be afraid to get on them now. I would probably brake some bones that should not be broken. Thanks for sharing this.

I don't skate anymore for the same reason. Afraid to break any bones, oh well it will be our age I suppose. But look at skating is fun too.

Laat ik in Bergschenhoek wonen, het dorp naast Den Bliesen Wijck dus wij wandelen heel vaak langs de Rotte en de Rottemeren. Dat is ook toevallig.

Brings back good memories of years gone by iris, be afraid to don the blades today in case I fell and broke something (tricky enough making it from the car to the front door LOL without falling) But sure did enjoy it when the kids were young and we all went skating on the local rink...Have a great 2009 and thanks for sharing..

I don't go skating for the same reason, but it is always nice to see the children and all the people on the ice, sitting in front of my window and the heating on.

sqdancer by sqdancer 02 Jan 2009

How fortunate you are iris to be able to enjoy watching..is that water running in the summertime?

iris2006 by iris2006 03 Jan 2009

It ids not running water but we have big mills to get the water out to go into the tiver and then they will pump it to the sea. We live below the sealevel, that is why. Onced there is ice, they stop the pumps for the skating.

It may sound stupid but what is " an outside rink" ? Is it a Skateplace?? Thnaks for your comment Damaris

marjialexa by marjialexa 04 Jan 2009

Yes, Iris, a place for skating that is outside. Some places have inside skating all year, with freezing pipes in the floors. Nice fun on a hot summer day!

Thanks for sharing. We live in a country (South Africa) where even in winter there is very little snow. We only see the tips of the highest mountains, and must ride many kilometers to get to any snow that had fallen. This looks so lovely

iris2006 by iris2006 02 Jan 2009

Like Martine said, we don't have snow every winter that is why it is special to people when they are able to skate on natural ice.
