I really enjoyed seeing the ice skating pictures, and reading all the comments, thank you so much!! When we were kids, my father would take us to the frozen Lake Erie, and shovel the snow off the ice for us to skate. Sometimes, when there had been no wind, the ice was a foot thick and so clear you could see through it like glass. Happy memories, thanks!! Hugs, Marji
we don't have the very cold winters like we used to but it does have it's own charm.I'm a sun lover and would love to be in Florida at the moment Jo
We don't have very cold winters too, that is why this is so special. When the cold weather stays and the ice is thicker we have an "elevencitytour on iceskates" in the n orths of the Netherlands in Friesland. But I don't think we get there this year.
That would be great to just go out your door to go skating. One of my fondest memories of my father was that he spent a lot of time taking us ice skating at a pond by the local school. He and a couple other fathers would shovel off the snow and flood it with a thin layer of water to make it smooth. We had a great time.
Great memories. In our old house we had a water down the backgarden. In the summertime the children went there in a small rubberboat. In the winter the firebrigade came to put more water on top adn at the other side of that water was a school. All the children from the school went on the ice to skate. Marvelous
Looks like fun. I haven't been on skates now for about 8-9 years, but have them ready to go...maybe tmrw after church if it's not oo cold.. been -30oC or so lately
nice pictures, its so fun to skate in nature
Hier gaan ook mensen hopen op een lefstedentocht, maar ik denk niet dat dat ervan gaat komen dit jaar. Op dit moment dooit het al weer behoorlijk. 4 januari 2009 19.09 uur
I am glad they are all having fun, me personally have had enough cold weather already and winter has just got started...I am ready for lots of sun....
looks like great fun, and lovely to see, as I live in Qld Australia where the humidity has been unbearable the last week it would be lovely to be there, thanks
I have not been on ice skates since we lived in North Carolina, and that was at a rink in the center of a mall. I skated on outside rinks when I was a young girl in Nebraska - oh that has been so many years ago. I would be afraid to get on them now. I would probably brake some bones that should not be broken. Thanks for sharing this.
I don't skate anymore for the same reason. Afraid to break any bones, oh well it will be our age I suppose. But look at skating is fun too.
Nice picture!
Hmmm :( I feel jelous, not even close to be really cold here. I miss those days. Thanks for sharing the pic, this will probably be the closest I'll be to ice other than my fridge lol
Thanks adelmarie, but the ice will be disapear soon because the temp is getting higher now.
Brings back good memories of years gone by iris, be afraid to don the blades today in case I fell and broke something (tricky enough making it from the car to the front door LOL without falling) But sure did enjoy it when the kids were young and we all went skating on the local rink...Have a great 2009 and thanks for sharing..
I don't go skating for the same reason, but it is always nice to see the children and all the people on the ice, sitting in front of my window and the heating on.
How fortunate you are iris to be able to enjoy watching..is that water running in the summertime?
It ids not running water but we have big mills to get the water out to go into the tiver and then they will pump it to the sea. We live below the sealevel, that is why. Onced there is ice, they stop the pumps for the skating.
There is an outside rink near here but I hardly see anyone using it. Sure is cold enough.1 person on it now I live in MN.
It may sound stupid but what is " an outside rink" ? Is it a Skateplace?? Thnaks for your comment Damaris
Yes, Iris, a place for skating that is outside. Some places have inside skating all year, with freezing pipes in the floors. Nice fun on a hot summer day!
Thanks for sharing. We live in a country (South Africa) where even in winter there is very little snow. We only see the tips of the highest mountains, and must ride many kilometers to get to any snow that had fallen. This looks so lovely
We hadn't seen proper ice in years, but now everybody is going crazy!Hope it lasts through another week.
Like Martine said, we don't have snow every winter that is why it is special to people when they are able to skate on natural ice.
Carla, how fun - thanks for sharing this.
You're welcome and yes it is fun but it was just a short fun because the temperature is getting up now.
Here is the picture
I was rasided in Michigan, remember those days. Hours we would spend. I live in Florida now and Christmas doesn't seem like Christmas.
same here I am now in Calif. and Christmas was not Christmas to me .I am from NC .TN AND MO where there is snow and ice.
