I think if you want least cost you will be looking at a brother Igot the inovis 900 18 months ago many new modles are out since then. it is only 4x4, I have go a bigger hooped brother now. Had I have known then what I know now, what pleasure, enjoyment and utter fullfilment this hobby was going to be. I would had gone for a more expensive multi hoop. I did not want to spend a lot on my first machine either, I wanted to do freehand machine embroidery, it was my husband who said " get one to do embroidery as well you might enjoy it. " HA HO. now he is am embroidery machine widow.
Hugs Pam.

My first machine was the smallest Brother from WalMart at $350+ and it did just great, after doing many projects with it I then got the Brother Innovis 1500D and LOVE it.

I have a Janome 11000 it may not be the cheapest machine, but it does the embroidery so much nicer than a lot of other machines which I loved at, ane some being top of the range. It also has so many other things built into the machine that a lot of others don't have. It is also a general sewing machine with over 300 different fancy stitches, plus it is also ideal for quilting as well. Well worth you having a look at it. Good luck

You have to give me some of the variables for me to give you an answer to this:

1. What do you want to be able to do with the machine (as in: do you want to be able to do other sewing in addition to embroidery, do you want to be able to sew on hats, and so forth)?

2. What sewing field size do you want?

3. Are you looking at a home machine or a comercial size? If commercial, how many heads/needles to you want?

My answer will change depending on your answers.

As for a home machine recommendation, I am pretty happy with my Brother 6500 for a duo machine with a 5x7 field (it also does regular sewing stitches) and with my old Deco 650 for a embroidery-only machine with a 4x4 field.

You would need to define "best". There are SO many variables in machines and their capabilities and also the manner in which the software works with the machine and it's flexibility. Only you can answer that. May I suggest that you go to several different dealers and test drive some popular brands. I LOVE my Bernina 440 QEE because in addition to embroidering, I love to quilt also!
