Good morning cuties. I'm making a Civil War era "mourning coat" for a lady. I've never made anything like this before, any advise or tricks from anyone who's done it?

Do you have a pattern, and need help with it, or are you asking for historical info? Sorry, sometimes I can be a little dim. I'm always amazed at those "Scarlett O'Hara" dresses that were all made *by hand*, eeek. Those old seamstresses must have been talented ladies, and probably half blind from trying to sew by candle or oil lamp light. Good luck, Marji

Marji, I'm just fishing for any tips, fitting, etc. This is the first one I've made and yes, I have a pattern which is pretty easy, but I guess when I sew my perfectionist comes out.(That seems to be the only time I see her, she's not interested in housework!) You're right about the seamstresses of the era, they had to be pretty special!
Thanks for your answer! *4u

I think they wore black for a "proper" time. It should be an interesting research.

Yes, it is black on black, very hard to see, but should be an elegant look. *4u

nope, sorry. I have been to the reinactment at Gettysburg, but I'm afraid I did pay attention to the ladies attire very closely. I'm sure there is lots of info on the web and from some of the enactors.

!!! I didn't think of that. Some of those ladies undoubtably make their own costumes. I'll look online. *4u
