ok I know this has nothing to do with embroidery except.... this happened when I was working on a project. Have you ever been sitting there and a slug is at your feet? ewww....well ever since I moved into my house about a year ago we have noticed what they call slugs .... they look like snails with no shell. they are hideous!! My boys like killing them by dumping salt on them ..... but what can i do to keep them away? I live in a house that has no crawl space or basement. I can't seem to keep them away and it is soooo gross and slimy!!! I looked at walmart but found no slug be gone!! any helpful hints?

Check you local hardward store. We get something every year to put down usually in May. It has really helped since we have done it for several years now. If we have a wet spring they tend to come up out of the ground. One year they were so bad that they come in the garage under the doors. We could not get in the cars without stepping on them.

we don't have them that bad inside just one here or there, still gross enough to bother me. I checked the feed store and walmart, neither had anything. Maybe I will check in the spring, for now I try beer.

Just remember if they are the big Leopard slugs, patterned not plain grey, they are the good slugs that eat snails and other slugs. You can buy traps that have poison inside, or you can get plastic piping and put some snail and slug poison inside and hide the pipe under your plants. The poison can kill small pets and make children very sick, that's why it's best placed inside a pirece of piping. You can also buy pots that you set into the ground and pour beer into them, the slugs and snails are attracted to the smell and crawl in and drown. Ok, enough vicious killing for tonight I'll have nightmares. LOL! Hugs n roses, M

I knew you had to be from somewhere in the south! Ug! I remember stepping on those things barefooted when a child, then stepping in dirt...had to scrap bottom of your foot, which was NOT good if you are ticklish! Childhood memories! The beer works; the slug killer from garden shops in the large chains work, you do feel revenge when you "salt" them...but that's just on one slug! They like to be under leaf litter, rocks, etc., so be sure all around your house walls (outside) is cleared out. Hopefully you get rid of those nasty things! In the spring, put out the slug killer and don't let them get a start! Hopefully it will be cold enough this winter to kill them out til spring! Good luck!

You can probaly try spreading crashed egg shell arount the house. They don't like crawling on it as it cuts their body. Works well underneth hosta and it's really good for the environment.

Are they that big kind with out a shell. I think they are called Banana slugs??? EEww!! I find that if I cover the yard with slug killer in early spring ...then again just to make sure...then we are slug free for a while

Copper wiring is the least toxic solution. The metal ions in copper repel the slugs and gives them a jolt of electricity when touched. Also, you could try laying diatomaceous earth (talcum powder) down...

You can buy "Slug Pellets" from Lowes, Walmart etc. You just sprinke them around the edge of your home. Slugs eat them and die. I use them -- works great!

EEWWWWWW!! I have slugs in the gardens all the time, and they're the ones eating holes in my hostas. I get a product from Lowes especially for that, I think it's made by Ortho, but it's early & I'm not sure. Especially for slugs & snails. I thought it was bad enough to grab one in my bare hands while weeding (NOT intentionally, eewwww), but to have them in the house? Oh, gosh! I hate killing any living thing, but they'd have to go most certainly out of the house. I didn't know they had a taste for cat food, did they make some evolutionary leap? EEWWWW, slugs are horrible! Good luck, Marji

I get those slugs in my garden I take tonic bottles cut the top off fill with beer and put in ground they crawl in and die!!!! ya!!!! other then that they do sell a product for them you would sprinkle around the outside of your house but if it rains it washes away so it ends up costing you can pick it up in a garden center Hope this helps.

chickens or ducks love to eat them. the beer can works. do not plant dahlias (they love them). Do not leave dog or cat food out. And whatever you do, DO NOT step on them...
You cant get that feeling or slimy away...

Get a tuna can. Put some beer in it, just enough to cover the bottom.
We had a neighbor years ago that brought in a bunch of dirt from the mountain, and we had slugs everywhere. We both did this, and they were gone in a very short time. Haven't seen any since that summer.

Coke works too. and a tin pie plate. you want to be able to drown them. works very well.

geruvyme by geruvyme 24 Sep 2008

Do they drown in the beer or get drunk on it and go away to die?

geruvyme by geruvyme 24 Sep 2008

will have to try that!

mops by mops 24 Sep 2008

They die in the beer, hopefully in a state of mild delirium. Works wonders in the garden, at least lots of them drown, but there are still enough teetotallers that ruin my hosta.

funny they have left my hosta alone.... i have seen then eating my outside cat's food though....ewwwwww!

Did you ask the garden section assistant??? Perhaps you can probably go to Lowes, Home Depot or somewhere like that and see if they have anything.
