The carving out of the shell is incredible. Mother of Pearl wa s very popular in Victorian times.
This is an old boot button hook that belonged to my grandmother.
I have never seen one like it before but I think it's gorgeous. Personally, unless I needed the money, I would hang on to it just because it was my grandmothers. I'm sentimental when someone gives me something or it belonged to someone from my past.
It is beautiful Carolyn. I'd keep it in my China cupboard (in my case my glass/liquor cabinet! Love Chris
Very pretty. I am sure there are collectors out there looking for something like that.
Love Mother of Pearl or Pearls period. Pretty luster and some different shell or mollusks have beautiful color like the Abalone. I will send you 3 pic's I found similar to what you have--could not find face but looks as if it is Indian Man....carved into the shell.
Carolyn thanks for this as it’s not something I have seen before. My late mother had napkin rings from horn as there was plenty of it about. My grandmother was called Caroline too
My grandmother was also Caroline. And my granddaughter is also. My son never knew his great-grandmother, so I think it was a coincidence that his daughter is also Caroline, but I think it's neat.
Your napkin ring is beautiful! I love to use cloth napkins and have a huge collection of rings.
I liked watching the artisans carve cameos from shells when I visited Italy about 10 years ago. Had to have one!
It's beautiful. I'd keep it as a way to remember her. In the antique stores here, we often see carved shell night lights called Florida lights, because the shell collectors carved them in their free time!
Very unusual item.Any idea whose head is carved into the shell? It would probably someone well known at the time from your country.
Mother of pearl is the iridescent material inside of shells. You can see it in your second picture. close to your thumb. Often pieces of it will be in jewelry. This napkin holder is a interesting piece.
