Hi everyone. Finally have pictures downloaded to the computer. This is a bag made for mom for Christmas. I used a pattern for part of it but added my on twist to make it very useful. Started out by adding 2 1/2 inches to the length. Then added a zipper closure at the top, and a magnet on the gold outside pocket. The inside pocket was made in the hoop, the leaves are a modified design. Also added open pockets in the lining. The label is inside the zipper pocket. This bag took weeks to make. Does anyone else have that problem when modifying or making your own pattern?

Excellent bag! Love the leaves and the label in the pocket. It would take me at least that long to make. Good Job!

I found you this old link but still works. This is the way I put in zippers, most of the time, no matter the bag size. Look below at continued post.

Your gift for your mom turned out great! I like how you added your own twist. I often do that myself. It seems patterns never give you just what you need, whether it be inside and outside pockets, an inside loop to clip keys to, etc. I also love the embroidered leaves and the hidden personal touch of the label. Good job- Toogie

I have not found a bag pattern that has a zipper closure. I have put a couple of zippers in the top and still struggle. Any suggestions?

You don't need a pattern. Look at how the zips are put in the cosmetic bags for instance. Google how to put a zipper in a bag. I'm sure you can find the basic info and go from there.
I also like my bags to have body or structure. There are a number of items and ways to do that, too. Sometimes I quilt the main body or lining with batting to a scrap fabric that doesn't have to match. It will be hidden on the inside between your main fabric and your lining. I have also used iron on Pellon 809 on my linings. I have made one purse and used Headliner fabric for body in place of batting. It worked out great for me and plan to do more with that,as it adds to a more 'professional' look, just haven't had time.
Good luck!-Toogie

Scroll back thru some of Toogie's posts. She makes lots of bags and adds pockets and extra features. I think I don't have the mindset! Great job for your mom's bag.
