UPDATE to add slip-Thrift Shop Recycle- Hi Cuties!

I wanted to make my grand-daughter a play dress-up' dress, so I went to the thrift shop and found this Prom dress for $3. It had a black netting slip attached at the waist, that I didn't even rip off, to make Nora's new slip. (I just realized I forgot the slip photo so I'll add later.)

For the slip, I cut it seam included from the top, then took 2 rows of basting stitches below the seam, on top of nets and black lining. Then I cut the original seam off. Saved me a lot of gathering together.Added a waitband & had to cut the length of slip, of course, and that was it.

The zipper was broke in the prom dress, so I couldn't salvage it. I used a new 37 cent zipper, from the site Bev told me about one time. (Thanks Bev!) Oh, and I added a snap (she had to have purple!) on her slip waistband.-lol-Look at this face, worth every penny!-lol-Other than threads, that's about all it cost me.

I embroidered this FSL on white netting and just stitched it on the top of the bodice neckline, after I stipple quilted the bodice.( I needed to practice my stippling-lol) I made this out of the lining of the prom dress, as I want to make her another one, with the real taffeta fabric. I told her she can let Ellie, her cousin that's the same age, wear one when they play.

If you look close at the back of the dress, you will see seams going at a slant. That's because I never ripped the original skirt of the dress apart, at the seams. I used a circle skirt pattern and just cut it out from the original front fold. I wouldn't make a real/good dress like this, but remember it's for play.

I also put her zipper in and the teeth show, but that's so the kids don't hang the teeth on the fabric, that I usually have over the zip. The length is about 3 inches from the floor, so she doesn't walk or trip on it, but it looks like its on the floor in these photos. I was just playing around.

You probably won't like it as much as she does, but I hope you like it.-Toogie

Wonderful job Mrs.Toogie. Way beyond my capabilities. And that young lady certainly knows how to pose and clearly loves the dress. Incidentally, did you find any cameras for sale at the Thrift shop?

What's with this 'Mrs.Toogie'?!/-lol- I'm Toogie, please.

When I got this dress, the camera incident hadn't happened. I've gone back only once since. When I ran in (with my cane) I left this beauty sleeping, in her car seat and her Grandpa at the wheel with that,'I'm ready to get home, so don't be long' look...never even thought about a camera............of course we don't live anywhere close to THE Goodwill they SAY they take the goods to.....I would like to see if the manager has a collection, of nice cameras, in his home........

I like your remake better than the original. Love the stippled top! Your model does an outstanding job of showing your lovely work.

Oh she likes to try on but won't be still for 'still shots'-lol- Do you have any ideas for another bodice? I know some of the big gowns are strapless like this one, but this style doesn't look right on a little one to me, even for play.

sewtired by sewtired 10 Jun 2016

Not off-hand, I think the sweetheart neckline is just perfect and as I said, I love the stippling. Are you looking for a different style for the second dress?

toogie by toogie 11 Jun 2016

Yes, I thought i'd do something a little different....but may be not.........

It doesn't take much to make her happy, but when my son came in, I wanted her to try it on for him. She was watching cartoons and didn't want to, even though he threatened to take it home with him. She wasn't worried because he has all boys!-lol

The original was such a tiny dress size and most people won't put a zipper in, so it made Nora a good play dress. So maybe Ava will get one or more, in the future?............lol

Thank you Sue, I know you're good at re-cycling, as well. I guess she needs a crown now.......lol

That should be a simple make

toogie by toogie 09 Jun 2016

Asterixsew, I intend to make a crown (somehow) with the rhinestones I ripped off the original dress, but it will be for the next blue taffeta.

This is a wonderful grandmother story and you have a model in training. The original owner probably donated it because of the broken zipper. I once bought a designer label 2 pc suit for $10. because the skirt zipper was broken. I fixed it and wore it for many years. Kay

Wonderful and she's a little charmer. I remember the fun of going to my neighbor's house and playing dress up. Her mom kept all her "past their prime" dresses and matching shoes in an upstairs closet and we could play out of that closet.

toogie by toogie 09 Jun 2016

I did the same thing with my moms. My favorite shoes were her blue high heels and favorite skirt was a circle skirt. The background of the skirt was black and white, kinda streaks at an angle, with big red roses scattered throughout.
