What kind of software do you recommend for a beginner? I'm just looking for something to compile words and images. I have a brother inovis 1200.

If you have brother maybe go with brother software. I don't know. If you have lessions from your dealer , they are helpful. I have BErnina software so I can't give you advise about Brother.Maybe other brother girls will help!!

Welcome! Happy you joined us here. I love my Bernina Artista. It did take me 3 months to get comfortable using it and my machine, but I was learning how to embroider at the same time, so I guess that's not too bad.;)

Hi akabowers. I also have an innovis 1200, which I love. I was lucky that I got the PE design lite as part of my package, so have been able to play with it from the beginning. It allows me to download designs from the internet, which is a blessing and a curse as it is addictive, and to combine the designs with other designs, or with text. It also has 35 built in fonts and autopunch so you can put in clipart and turn it into a design. There was also a trial version of the full PE design program which I am going to try soon. I have found it easy to use. I am not sure if I get a discount if I want to upgrade to PE design.
Good luck.

Jill, does your PE Light enable you to download additional fonts and combile a phrase to embroider?

jillsmith by jillsmith 29 Jun 2008

Yes and no. I can download alphabets, some of which I have purchased and some are freebies such as from this site. You can't just type them in like the built in fonts on PE lite, you have to input one, save to clipboard, get another, save combination to clipboard, get third, etc. Tedious, but I have still had fun doing it. You can make up your own phrases, and make each letter a different colour if you want.

Can you transfer regular word fonts on your computer into embroidery fonts?

jillsmith by jillsmith 30 Jun 2008

hmm, had to get help from son on this one. You can type what you want on Word. Then you press 'print screen', and then paste that into 'paint' program. Adjust that so you only have the text selected. Then, you save that as image, and import it into PE lite. Then you use PE lite to convert it into an embroidery design. I haven't sewn it out yet, but it would give you a lot more options if it looked OK. Can't see why it wouldn't.
