Each corner section takes about an hour to stitch and a full bobbin. The side sections about a half hour or so. I used about 7000 yds of cotton thread. I stitched all the sections together by hand and it took a hour and a half to attach the fabric to the lace by sewing machine. Then a half hour to cut away the exccess fabric.

Oh, so that's what Battenburg Lace is used for. Thank you very much for posting this wonderful example, so neat. I would truly love to know how it's done, step by step.

You embroider the 4 corner pieces. Them embroider as many side pieces as you want depending on how big you want to make it. Then the pieces are all joined together just at points where they touch. This design has 3 spots that get stitched at each intersection. When the lace is all joined together and forms a circle you lay it on top of a piece of fabric and use a zig-zag stitch to attach it. Once it is attached you trim away the fabric that is lying under the lace and you are done. Give it a try.

After the lace is all sewn together ansd forms a circle and lay it on top of your fabric. Stitch it to the fabric using a zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine. Then trim away the fabric that is lying under the lace and you are done. Give it a try.

Thank you. So basically it is free standing lace which is attached once completed. Wow this takes a long time, but well worth it. I will hopefully find some smaller designs for 4x4.
