O.K. Any help appreciated - I have sewn out all these designs from SOE and when I washed them you can see a lot of the threads that haven't been captured. Yet, when they were sewing I couldn't see any problem. What am I doing wrong? Love and blessings Chris

Chris-these are beautiful. I don't know how big they actually are, but looking at them makes me think of those ponytail "barrettes" you know-the kind where you use a stick-similar to an manicure orange stick to loop the fancy pc. in front-the stick in one side, under the ponytail and back up through the other side of the fancy pc.-they would be so pretty for something like that. Great job! ~linda~

Have a realy good close up look at other cuties fsl and you will find most of them have visable threads that shouldn't be there. "shirlener88" seems to have it perfect, but I know I am in the same boat as you. when you find the answer, please pass it on. xx

I am bumping this up to the top of the list so others can see the comparisons of the different stitch outs of these Napkin rings by Chris.

Some improvements have been made by Cris in the stitch outs but there appears to be a flaw in the digitizing of these designs.

They are beautiful at a distance but going in with a close-up you can see the stray threads. I know this must be disheartening! You are a perfectionist and I am sure you will get it all worked out unless it is in the designs and not the the workmanship! If it were me, I would drop the sesign and try another set of napkin rings(at least one anyway) to find out if it is the machine/thresd/tension or if it is the designs! I hate to waste materials as much as I do having a design that is just not right! I am positive that the end results in your napkin holders will be a gorgeous one!

I had a real close look at your pictures of the designs and I think some of the problem is that you didn't use enough stabilizer and also you didn't use the same thread as top thread and bobbin thread.

Parts of the stitching in the designs look very loose as if they are not forming right ans also you have part of the under stitches showing or not covered by the satin stitching.

If I were you I would try one more time Chris.
Use 2 layers of the water soluble stabilizer.

Same embroidery thread in the top and bobbin.

If you can get the Shelf liner and Wonder tape and put that on your hoop.

New needle.

Slow machine down abit for stitching.

If using polyester thread then make sure to slow your machine down when you wind the thread on the bobbin and for stitching for better results as polyester thread stretches when wound on a bobbin or embroidered at high speed.
It then relaxes when the machine slows down during the stitching or stops and this can cause some thread problems in designs.

If you have any rayon embroidery thread I would suggest trying it instead of the polyester thread it may give you better results.

If you still get the same results then take pictures and send all of them to Miems at Dainty Stitches and let her know how disappointed you are and ask her to correct the designs for you and others that may like to buy these designs.

Hopefully she will do this for you!
Gosh I just purchased designs from her and almost bought some of the Napkin Ring sets but didn't yet.

Do you have a Husqvarna/Viking Machine?
You mentioned that you used the VIP format for these designs so I am guesing you do.!
I have a H/V Designer 1 machine.

Let us know how you do.

Hi Chris,.....I do embroidery 12-15 hrs everyday. The napkin holders are very pretty. When I enlarge the photo, I can see what you are saying. Check you needle for a burr, also try using a size 70/10 needle. This will make for a smaller hole.
PS....I am also a perfectioist.

Hi again, I forgot to tell you that you should use a ball point needle, they are not so sharp and will not cut you water soluable paper.

Thanks precise - I can see from your avatar that you must be a perfectionist.

By the way welcome to this great site - I see you only have 4 flowers, so you must be really new.

I have just put in new needle, but I only have 75/11 - sorry to previous posts I had put 75/12 but they are 11's.

Hi Chris,
I did similar ones from dainty stitches I think and after reading your post I washed, dried and looked
closely and have the same thread wiskers as Capoodle
said or spider webs comes to mind. Its on the bobbin side and seen from the top and are very untidy and obvious. Shucks, I used 2 to 3 pieces of Vilene and metro poly.

I think these designs are very intricate and detailed causing more obvious disruptions.
The designing is so tight that less than a hair off
messes up the design which can be caused by tension
microshifting of the WSS, the designers original thread maybe just a bit thicker than ones we are using (I used metro poly), etc.

My solution to the problem is cheating because I dont have time or enough thread for a redo right now.
Trick: Use a craft hot iron with a needle or sharp point to clean up the untidy whiskers after clipping any longer threads.
Took me 30 minutes to clean up 4 napkin rings.
It seals, shows no bumps and looks clean.
I learned this trick from a paper doll designer to clean up whiskers off the edges of applique paper dolls. Its time consuming but works very well to clean up short untidy whiskers. Just have to be careful not melt the design.

Some would never do this and thats okay but hey its
an alternative in a pinch.
PS Dont think it would work with cotton or rayon.
Hugs,
Linda

I don't believe you are at fault Chris as I had the same problems with the Poinsettia napkin rings, I had to do a lot of hand stitching to hold them together.
Mine were stitched on the Diamond with new needles and Fabric WSS that never lets me down.
I made six of them and they all did exactly the same thing.

meganne by meganne 02 Sep 2011

PS. try two layers of WSS, cut and hooped in opposite directions. (I cut 2 whole strips, place one across, one up and down) don't cut off the overhang but move your design either as far up (or down) and to one side of the hoop as it will go - away from the overhang.

Oh, do you have any of that rubbery material that you put under items to stop them sliding?

If you do, then put some down both sides, in between the two sections of the hoop, it will prevent any possibility of slipping.

pennifold by pennifold 02 Sep 2011

Thanks Meg, yes I remember you telling me that. I've just put two layers, criss-crossed them. I've put in a new needle 75/11, have White Polyester thread on top and in bobbin and am listening to the machine purring away. I've lowered the speed to as Eastwitch suggested - the only thing I don't have is a ball point needle for embroidery - I'll have a look through my needle collection after this one is finished. As all of these are about 15,000 - 20,000 stitches they take a while!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a slip guide that looks like foam. I like the idea that Eastwitch suggested looks like those little hand grips you can buy from the supermarket to help you open bottles.

Love to you Chris

I have done quite a few FSL's lately adnI just noticed; I knew my needle needed changing - I just wanted to get one more in tonight and also I was cheating on stabilizer and pieced it together. It was not taut in the frame as when I use new all the way around, The result is - my piece is not as clean as usual. I can tell mostly in the areas that are semi filled in. Do you need to change your needle? Happy Stitching! christine

Chris, "they" always say to use the smallest hoop possible. I didn't see whether you stitched more than one at a time, but I know that when I've tried to do 2-4 small designs like this in one hooping there seems to be more of a problem. I have done some FSL lace ornaments like this - very stitch-intensive 25000 stitches, and used Ultra-Solvy with great success. It's available at JoAnns and a good price with a half-off coupon. It looks like a clear heavy vinyl and is very sturdy, but washes out like a dream. It was recommended by the designer and I was pleased with the outcome. As far as what went wrong, it could be any of the things others mentioned or a combination. Also make sure that the hoop is tightened as much as it can be, very very tight. WSS seems to stretch if it has the opportunity. One other thought - Don't skimp on the amount of stabilizer that hangs over the edge. Sometimes I try to get by with just a little bit sticking out around the hoop and I'm always sorry afterwards. It just doesn't pay to cut corners sometimes. Good luck to you, Chris! Be sure to give us an update so we can all learn.

Try using 2 layers of water soluble stabilizer.

If you can re download the designs and see if that makes a difference.

Or if you can download the DST format in the designs and then convert them to you format that your machine uses.

Sometimes problems occur whe FSL designs are converted from the original digitzed format to other machine formats.

Clean the bobbin area of your machine.
Make sure your bobbin thread is wound right on the bobbin.
Were you suing the same thread for top thread and bobbin thread?

Which type of thread did you use for the Napkin Holders?
Did you user 1 or 2 layers of water soluble stabilizer?

When I mentioned that your water soluble stabilizer may be slipping while you embroider there is a solution that you could try.

I am posting a link for you to the Criswell K Lace website that shows how to apply Wonder Tape and Shelf Liner Strips on the bottom of your inner hoop. This will stop your water soluble stabilizer from slipping or moving in the hoop while you embroider.
You can click on each photo to see a close up of each picture.

Also make sure to use a new needle and change it often as they become dull quickly when stitching FSL.
If possible slow your machine down just a bit when stitching these.
If you used polyester thread perhaps try Rayon thread and see if that makes a difference in how they stitch.

Is it possible that your free standing water soluble stabilizer is slipping in the hoop while you embroider them out and that is causing the parts of the design to not line up leaving some of the threads showing?

Other than that it may be a digitizing problem that needs to be corrected.

Thanks for all of your help Eastwitch2 - I'll try a different thread. The WSS was perfectly hooped and didn't slip. I used a number 11/75 needle and it was new. I only use the mesh like WSS as I don't like the plastic looking one. Once again thanks for all your input. I really appreciate it. Love Chris

eastwitch2 by eastwitch2 01 Sep 2011

Even when we think that stabilizer is hooped right it can slip.
FSL has many stitches and when the needle puctures the stabilizer so many times to form all those stitches it pulls and pushes on the stabilizer and tends to pull it into the middle of the hoop.
When this happens parts of a design will not line up right.
Water soluble stabilizer is pretty light weight and it moves easily in our hoops while we stitch.
We don;t see the movement of the stabilizer but the design results show it.
I use the mesh like water soluble stabilizer too and I also use the Wonder tape and shelf liner strips on all my hoops for all my embroidery with great results.
