Does anyone know if there are any places in Brisbane Australia that run Kilt making classes ? This would be for proper kilts for Highland Dancing

The old Readers Digest book on sewing shows you how to do that. I bought mine in an op shop some years ago when they came out with the current book which has a lot of techniques missing.
There used to be lots of good sewing teachers in Brisbane when I was there many years ago. Sorry, don't know about now.
Lots of careful pining and hand basting is required to keep the lines of the fabric in the correct place as you sew.
Will ask my sister who lives there.

Ha ha ha! Meg beat me to it. We both must have been looking for this at the same time. I'm not sure if they have kilt making classes, but there would be no harm in ringing them and asking. Love Chris

Pam I know nothing about making a kilt but as Sue has said look on YouTube. Making a kilt was one of the tasks in the recent Great British Sewing Bee. If yo have time on your side make a trial one in cheap fabric to check what you have to do. All of the competitors made great kilts and it seemed to the observer that good preparation was the order of the day. I have never needed to make a kilt but from seeing them being made I would not be put off. Have fun

Yep done that , all a bit birds eyed view. I have found some instructions so might practice on some cheaper fabric. I am fine with the making it's just learning how to match the pleats at the back so the pattern stays constant.

I don't live in Qld, so cant help, but may offer a suggestion if it helps, MANY years ago I needed help with a pattern for a flower girl dress, the bride wanted it to be identical to hers..... it was more than my ability at the time to make the pattern, soooo I rang the local TAFE college, they were able to help me with a lovely lady that was able to reproduce the pattern in smaller size for me. Maybe if you ring the TAFE they might be able to point you in the right direction for the classes !!!! hope tis is some help, good luck
