I am so distraught! Took our 14yr old cat for cleaning his teeth-- 8am this morning. Now 8 pm and they can't wake him from sleep drug. I came home just a bit ago...petted and begged him to wake. Vet says sometimes they wake, and sometimes not. Thinks a stroke is possible. I love him sooo much and I can't stop worrying. Poor baby has IV tube, but he just lies there kicking as if chasing a rabbit. I simply cannot lose him. Please keep us in your thoughts. I've read about the power of Cutie prayers.TIA

Spent over an hr with him this a.m. and he is not improved..tho his eyes are open and staring...still running on his side . Oh, he makes deep grunting sounds today. I'm so heartbroken that he is having to go thru this-all cuz we wanted to keep his teeth clean. The Vet is strangely silent..only said if he reaches a level & doesn't seem to make any changes, they will discontinue treatment. This is not right--a tteeth cleaning should not leave you grieving over your pet. If there's no improvement by Monday morning, we've decided to put him down. I cannot bear to see him like this any longer. Thank you, every one, for your words of hope. I want to share my baby with you. He has brought his mouse to me...you can see we tied a string to the tail. He loved carrying his toys and 'announcing' he was showing off. Our house is so quiet tonight.

Sadly, our sweet baby crossed the Rainbow bridge without ever waking. My heart is broken--he was our only pet for so long that he was like a child to us.

I Know how you feel, we had a cat that lived for 18 years who used to walk around saying Hello, when we had to put him to sleep I missed him so much and went out to the SPCA and got 2 more, then found a lovable kitten and the a stray decided to find us for love, so now we have 4.
They are like family. Love them to bits.

Oh No I feel your pain, of course this should not have happened.
I hope you will just remember all the love you gave your little cat.
Know that you gave your best to him in all those years. He loved you back unconditionally as well. We have 4 cats here and they are a beautiful animal...so sorry to read/hear this... hugs

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm down to one cat for almost a year and still haven't committed to the next one, although Sugartoes would love a companion. I fixed up a nice spot for Dubba in the woods (his favorite) and I go and talk to him. It helps. I've lost many cats through the years, but I'm always ready at some point to love the next one. i hope that day comes for you two.

I have a 12 year old dog and I hate having to put him under to clean his teeth. The vet I use said the older an animal the harder it is to get the drug out of their system so they try to give them just enough to get the job done quickly. He has lost many of his teeth and I think if they get too bad I will just have them all pulled. I feel so sad for you and hope & pray that your little buddy comes back to you soon. He is a very pretty fellow.

I can go for a few minutes, but something reminds me and I bawl again--as I'm doing as I look at his pix. The members of this site rally around each of us that suffers bad moments in their lives. I am truly overwhelmed and appreciative of all the prayers you have sent up. I guess he was needed on the other side for a purpose, but I don't know how long before I can accept it. Just the 3 of us and no cat could have been loved more. I keep remembering how he would be in another room--hear my voice and come running fast. He slept curled at the end of my pillow (truthfully, he shared the pillow)...he thought he was human too.
We are struggling, my hubby & I, about whether to give our love so freely to another, and risk this pain again. It is too soon yet to decide. My sincerest thanks to each of you who posted offering condolences...I never dreamed of this outcome when I first shared my concerns.

I am so sorry to hear your news. I did not know what to say when I first read it, and now taking this personally I have decided I will not have the dog's teeth done. He is the best dog on earth, except when it comes to his teeth and nails.

its not right, I wouldn't say much if I was the vet either. I'm having a titer done on one of my dogs to see if she needs a distemper shot not just slamming something into her system she doesn't need. u cant be to careful with our small friends. I'm so sorry for you and your little friend

I'm just reading this sad news. I can feel the pain and anger you are having. Have a talk with the vet, but of course, it will not bring your cat back to you. Remeber the nice times you had together. Big hugg sent to you.

Oh, I am so so sorry for you, I am crying my eyes out. Of course this had to be the first thing I saw when I signed on, and now I'll sign off again.

I'm so sorry that you lost your baby over such a foolish thing! If I were you, I'd have a few hard words for the vet, if you were not warned about the dangers of putting older animals under.

Dear ones, please think twice before having older cats put under unless it's necessary surgery. The older they are, the harder it is on them. I know clean teeth are important, but cleaning can be done without putting the animal "out", I think the vets just find it easier and quicker, because cats don't cooperate well. You can get tooth scalers from Dr. Foster and Smith catalog, they have a small "ball" on the end instead of a sharp tip that may cut gums accidentally, and if you have a helper you can do it yourself. I do my little ones, and get most of the teeth. I don't have any help, so I can't get the furthest back ones. The scale pops right off. Sometimes you can do it with your thumbnail. My hands are too bad to do it that way. I do the dog, too, and he just sits there and lets me. You can also get a toothbrush and paste made especially for cats, and keep them fairly well yourself. Baking soda also works. Yes, they hate it, and you might need leather gloves, but are clean teeth worth the risk of them not waking up? ALL vets need to be up front with their clients about the risks to older animals or very young animals of any kind of anasthetic, and they sure don't seem to be doing a good job of it! I'm so sorry, I'm crying my eyes out for you, because this didn't have to happen! I hope somehow God can heal your heart.....my love, Marji

Marj, the vet clinic has never mentioned that it was dangerous--ever, and we signed no consent. We've used this office for 8 yrs and really liked our Dr.. But he has disappointed us this time. However, that was our last pet, sooo.....I guess I am too trusting. You know, it's funny. As we were driving home Friday morning after dropping him off, I suddenly had a feeling of sadness and my eyes teared up. Silly! But at the time I said to my husband, "I don't have a good feeling about this". How I wish we had turned around.

I feel your pain and I feel so bad for you. A couple years ago I took a seemingly healthy cat in for a checkup. Doctor visits stressed him so we usually just took the top of the carrier off and let him sit in the bottom. When they took him out of the carrier to weigh him he suffered a heart attack and died in the technician's arms. All efforts to revive him failed and I was heartbroken to lose my beautiful furbaby.

I am soooo very sorry he never was able to come out of the anesthesia. It happened too for us with our beautiful black 16 year old kitty Arrow. She had bad gums and needed her teeth cleaned and simply never came out of the sleepy state. So sad to watch them just waste away. I feel so bad for you. I hope you don't wait too long to fill your devastated heart and bring home a kitty who desperately needs love. It really will help fill that incredibly empty hole. You will always remember this kitty with special love. Hugs and more hugs, Jan

UPDATE:::::: My beautiful cat, and a piece of my heart crossed the Rainbow Bridge this morning...he never knew anything and was declining rapidly. Today he didn't move at all, nor batted an eye. We couldn't bear seeing him like that any longer, so we made the hardest decision of our lives. Friday morning he was healthy and a joy to love. But the anesthesia put him to sleep permanently--just to clean his teeth. He'd done this before with no problems. I am greiving our loss. We loved him very much. I am grateful for the time we had, but wanted more. Thank you all for your concern and prayers.

So sorry to hear this news. We love our four footed babies and do everything we have to in order to keep them healthy, fit and live a longer life and then sometimes we wonder why things like this happen. Just like humans we have to sign a paper knowing the results may not be a good out come. I pray your baby will come out of this okay. There is power in prayers.
