I have a design folder called "Never Sale" I keep the design files in there to help me remember that the digitizer does not want me to sell or profit in any monetary way using their gift of the free design.

(I would never sell any design file -- to me that is obviously illegal.)

How do you keep your design files -- the ones that the digitizers do not want us to stitch out and then sell the item -- separate from the other designs you have where the digitizer expects that you might sell the stitched item at a craft market or other local shop?

I don't know if many of you know this or not, but many of the digitizers that offer free designs do not want the items you stitch, using their design, to be sold. This includes digitizers that contributed to the DBC or offer their design files via email.

Let also add that I never sell anything In mass I would rather give as free or as a request from a friend.

In this case, I was specifically speaking of the Free designs. Some sites give away all their designs but want no sales at all of the finished product.
Remember designs are sold (or given) as a license to use them per the restrictions given by the digitizer. One cannot just do as they please because they feel they have a "right"

Please be sure to read (and follow) the license and limitations of ANY designs you download or acquire.

Good idea to separate them that way!

I would not sell anything unless I asked first. So not a problem here. I seldom sell things. I usually end up giving them away for gifts. Suzanne

Not an issue for me as I do not sell items, only gift them. Nan W

I had never thought about making a file specifically for those designs, it's a good idea..

I know what you are saying. But for some new to embroidery, she is talking not only about not selling the design itself, but anything you put the design on. Am I right? Many allow things to be sold at a craft show, but not mass production. Just be sure & check well. I know which sites won't let you sell anything done with their designs (the ones I go to, anyway) & mark those designs.

That was what I thought when I first saw this thread last night!

Yes, sorry I should have been more clear about that. I often believe that no one would consider selling the design files. I will edit the post to make that clear. Thank you both!

For me that's an easy one. I just don't sell anything! (smile)

That's a good idea. Mine are marked NFS (not for sale), but I might go back and put them in one folder to eliminate looking through them when searching for a sale item.

Thank you, rescuer. The standard license for DBC and YouEmbroidery, which most digitisers used, read:

Copyright: These design are protected by International & US Copyright Laws. The Design Files are licensed, not sold, to you. You have a nonexclusive, nontransferable, limited license to use the Design Files. THIS LICENSE IS LIMITED TO YOUR OWN PERSONAL, INTERNAL USE ONLY: gifts and individual items for resale at craft markets, and bazaars. Unauthorised reproduction or distribution of these designs or any portion of them, by email or any other means, is strictly prohibited. The digitised files and/or artwork cannot be sold, given away, shared or transferred in any way.

I noticed some of them specifically asked that the stitched item never be sold. I do hope people read and understand which ones should not be used for items that are sold (even at a craft market or bazaar)

You are right, there are exceptions, varying from "don't sell any project using my designs I give for free" to "do as you like with it".
