Amy's family dropped over yesterday for an impromptu lunch! Trevor just defrosted some Lamb fillets and Steaks and we had lunch about 1.30pm. It was a "stinker" here yesterday reaching 37C (very hot!!!) They had ridden their bicycles with Delphi sitting in a baby seat attached to Amy's bike and Ophelie on her own bike attached to Steve's wheels! By the time they got here ( about an 11km bike ride ) they were all hot and sweaty. Anyway, whilst here I asked Steve if he would climb up the ladder and check on the baby Kookaburras that have hatched and take some pictures. I've attached a couple for you all to have a look at. I love watching the parent birds coming and going feeding these little ones. There are actually 3 birds and they do this every year. There is the mother and the father along with a sibling from last year's batch! It's going to be another hot day here for us - and this is only Spring, not looking forward to summer this year! Love Chris

1. 3 Kookaburra chicks - one egg not hatched! This would normally be thrown out by the parents, so we will wait and see. This picture was taken with my new camera (Amy gave it to me for my birthday) and I haven't added the date to it yet.
2. This is the tree at the back of our deck, so you can see where they are nesting. This was taken in late August when they were checking the nest out. It's a very safe nest!

I think it was you that started me on watching birds via web cams. Here is a Kookaburra web cam. I want to know why they say laughing so I will follow this nest for awhile. I love laughter!

Oh goodness aren't they cute! We had a nest of robins last year right on the window sill above the front entrance of the house. I watched them grow through the glass. It's amazing how fast they grow and watching them learn to leave the nest was really funny. The last one to go was really slow. The mother finally just pushed it out and I thought oh no, it's going to hit the cement and not live but it took off like it should and away it went. It was fun but they sure made a mess of the sill and the glass. Was a chore to get it all clean. I love watching nature though and when my hubby insisted we take it down I said no leave it till the babies are gone. He did but I was the one who got the cleaning duty after the nest was gone.

Hi Donna, I know what you are going through. Our best friends John and Deirdre own a winery up in the Hunter Valley (a huge wine growing district outside of Newcastle) and they have Swallows all around the back of their home and boy what a mess they make. They make little mud droppings and attach them to the bricks and then have their babies and the same thing as your Robins. Love Chris

It was probably this warm so the babies wouldn't get cold. Little birds look so funny without feathers. Thank you and Mr. Steve for sharing the pictures. I'm surprised the parents didn't get upset with him.

Hi Leaha, the male bird flew out of the nest just before we got up there and sat in the back reserve watching us. They are so used to seeing us they don't worry about us anymore. Love Chris

Hi Chris, Thankyou for showing us your pictures and thank Steve for taking them. I have never seen baby Kookaburras before, so cute. I also hope that the last egg hatches soon too. It must be wonderful to have nature so close to your home, and your grand children must love it when they come to visit too. Sorry to hear that the weather was so hot, it was a very strange day in Adelaide too, was supposed to be 32degrees and ended up being 26degrees and tropical with showers and sticky. Thankyou for sharing. Love Lorraine McNeill

You're welcome Lorraine, it's so nice to have them in our tree. I don't think this egg will hatch as it's been over 2 weeks and so I'm assuming it wasn't a fertilised one. Steve actually carried Ophelie up on this hip and she had a look in the tree and was fascinated. I'm sorry to read that Adelaide is sticky that to me means it's humid! When we lived in Adelaide it was either too hot or cold! No humidity back in the 70's. Hope it settles down for you. Love Chris

Great photos...we had a strange summer here in So Cal...some days were actually on the cooler side (75 degrees F) and many were over 100 degrees F...we are in a severe going on 4 year drought...can't remember the last time it rained here...

What a great photo of the babies in the nest. I have been wondering how your kookaburras were going. You are so lucky they have a nest so close to your house. I don't know where the nests are here, but I have heard the noises they make when they are feeding etc. Hugs Shirley

Hi Shirley, we are so lucky in having this massive gumtree in our back yard. There were originally (when we first arrived here) Dollar birds in the nest, but one of the birds must have died as they've never been back. The Kookaburras mate for life, so it's so nice to have them each year. Love Chris

Your poor thing Carolyn. I don't envy your cold. I've never experienced cold like you get. Even in our snowfields it never gets down to minus 40 or whatever your lowest temps get to. I don't know how you survive in those sort of conditions. Love Chris

It's 26°C here and quite pleasant (79°F) It is a bit too warm for fall for most people, but I really like these temperatures. Can't wait to see those babies grow. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! Lynn, 50F is equal to our 10C! It doesn't get that cold here during the day. We may have that temp in the early morning during winter. Love Chris
