I really need some help from you clever ladies. I have knitted this square (just had to try this pattern) and realize that it would make a nice cushion cover. My question is:- do I knit a back or do I make a material back? My own thinking was to use piping and a material back where I could insert a zip. I have never sewn anything knitted on a machine before. Please help............

I wish I knew how to knit! However you decide to finish it - it will look lovely.

Very nice Sarah-is it entrelac? I wish I had the patience to knit-I keep picking up the needles-now that the cooler weather is coming here-for something to do when I am sitting watching TV with hubby in the evenings-but I start swatches and end up ripping out because I lose track of where I'm at or don't get it lol. I used to love to crochet too but I do like the looks of knit much better than crochet. Oh well, I will keep picking up the needles and yarn-maybe I will actually make something this winter. ~linda~ PS- can't wait to see your finished project!

Sarah I have sewn knitting together but I used silk seam binding top and bottom on the seam to keep feed dogs and foot from hanging in the knit. This worked well for me. I love this pattern bu not gonna try it. LOL Simply have too much on my plate right now/Lillian

Lillian thank you for the tip. I have already knitted one half of the back.

I would most certainly do what Spendlove suggested, knit the back in two halves, do buttonholes and stitch it all together by hand. I know just how much knitting is involved with that pattern, I made a jumper years ago for my son, don't know where I got the patience from!!!!

Pat - I have already started knitting the back - I just dread the sewing up - always the worst part of knitting for me.

Your knitting is beautiful! I wish I could knit. I crochet, or I did, not so much now, but I only learned a few knitting stitches. I probally can't even do them now, its been 45 years. I want to see the final results, so please post front and back photos, when you finish. I am sure it will be lovely.-Toogie

I'd knit the back in stocking stitch in two halves with a little overlap and buttons to fasten. I'd sew it up by hand.
Looking forward to seeing it finished! I love the entrelac design.

Since posting I have done a little research. I am certainly going to line the front. This morning I bought a fine needlecord which I was thinking for the piping and backing. Now reading your reply I think some lovely wooden buttons would look lovely on a band of rib and your idea of stocking stitch. Thank you Sue

if you wish to use a material back then I would put the zip across the middle of back easier to get cushion in.. Just a thought are you going to line the front so as not to stretch your beautiful knitted square either way hand tack your piping down first.. It will be a glorious cushion when finished.. Marian

I have worked with crochet, and I would reblock it onto prepared fabric larger than the piece and then use the extra to edge and hand stitch. Than taylor tack down every few inches, Then you can pipe and back it.

I would knit a back making two halves. and one a bit larger so you can overlap and have an opening to slip a pillow in. If you are going to sew I would cover the edge of the knitted part with a light weight tearaway strip so you do not get the material caught or stretched out. Haven't done it. Just my thoughts
