Ann Scott 8th February 1957 - 13th February 2014

AKA Cutie "scottie 0930" AKA "Mad Ann" (In my house at any rate.)

Ann was born into a wandering RAF family, but when her father died suddenly, her Mother took Ann and her brother back to Hull to live near her own family. Ann's progress through school was difficult as she was dyslexic and she left at 15 to start work in Lipman's the Tailor. (That is Maureen Lipman's father BTW) Quite soon she left there to join the fire service, mostly because her family said girls couldn't do that. Whilst learning to drive a fire engine and many other things, Ann managed to pass the necessary exams to go to Newcastle University as a mature student to study geology. She met her husband there and she went back to the fire service when she graduated. A career move took her into the prison service, first in women's prisons and later in men's where she taught the inmates to knit and embroider! She retired from the prison service as the governor of a maximum security prison. Her next career was in teaching. When she realised she would have to teach physics, a subject she had never studied, she signed on with the Open University and gained another degree to remedy her lack of knowledge. Typical of Ann.
Ann was the most loving, generous and caring person, and she passed these qualities on to her two children, now in their twenties. We met when she moved into an old farmhouse just round the corner from me when she was still in the prison service, but we only got to know each other well after we both retired. Ann's illness was quite advanced by this time, but when she learned I was going to upgrade to a new sewing machine, she bought my old one from me and had a huge amount of fun with it. She enjoyed sending and receiving gifts, and took part in every Secret Santa event right from the beginning. She visited Cute every day, but rarely posted.
Her cancer was a rare form of sarcoma which was treated by a succession of chemotherapy drugs. All the while she was going through this, she counselled other sufferers and worked tirelessly for the Cancer Information Network. The last drug began to fail in the Autumn and no new one was available so the disease progressed very rapidly. I sat with her in the hospice for a little while yesterday. Despite being sedated, she knew I was there, and I told her how many of you had sent their good wishes. The quilt was draped across the bottom of her bed.
Until the last few weeks, any time spent with Ann was full of fun, laughter and creativity. I will miss her enormously.

Sue, as I was reading about the person Ann was, I was struck by what a strong woman she was, how determined and practical she had to be, and yet what a joyful person she was. She made people laugh even till the end of her life. She lived the way we all hope we can. She may have lost the battle of cancer, but she truly won the challenge of LIFE. She lived honestly and influenced everyone around her in such a positive way, and she left a legacy of love. We can all only hope when we go on to Heaven that others will mourn for us, as so many do for Ann.
Thank you, Sue, for sharing this little bit of Ann with us. May God bless you, Sue, as you mourn for her, and may God give you peace and happy memories as you remember her over the years. Hugs, Jan

Sue what a beautiful piece on Scottie. I remember the first time we met at the NEC at a Quilt show and you said that your friend was buying your machine and you were getting a new one. The friend was Scottie and you also said that she had cancer. Last Feb or March I met Scottie when we met on a very snowy day at the NEC. I just will remember meeting this wonderful funny woman with an amazing laugh. What an amazingly interesting life she has had. I know that Sue is going to miss her friend a great deal.

Much too young and much too fast Ann had to leave this world.
Her family, you as one of her closest friends and the cute family will miss her a lot but she will be there in the memory of many. You spent many years and also her final days in the hospice with her and she was
wrapped in flower patches of love from all over the world - I am grateful that you did let me do a square of this quilt too.
Deepest sympathy for you and her family - Maria
Sorry that I did not meet her too in December in LIncoln but grateful that I did meet you and Gil as a little Cute gathering

I was privileged to meet Ann at a Cutie get together at Gillemmerson's, last November. Ann was lively and very funny, making us all laugh with stories of her life. There was no indication that she was so ill, so it came as a surprise when I had a request from Sue for a square for Ann's quilt. I was honoured to be included in this project. I was very privileged to know Ann, any one who had met her would have been captivated by her enormous personality and outgoing humour, she could hold you in awe of what fun she had had in her life, with stories that would belittle the best comedian.
In her life she had held jobs that some of us would never dream of, and though I only met Ann on Cuties get togethers, I was so overwhelmed by Anns personality, I emailed Sue, to say that she was very privileged to have such a lovely friend. Little did I know that lovely friend was in so much pain .
Words now fail me.
