ITH Mug Rug/Coaster Blank with Fabric Edge for 5x7 Hoop

The idea for this design came from a project posted by a Cutie a couple of weeks ago.

In the Hoop Mug Rug/Coaster for 5x7 hoop

Instructions:

For each mug rug you'll need:

1 - 6 inch square edging fabric

1 - 6 inch square batting

1 - 6 inch square top fabric

2 - 3 1/2 inch x 6 inch pieces backing fabric

If desired, choose a design from your collection for center. Great results using quilting medallions or red work designs. Sew design between Color Three (narrow zigzag circle) and Color Four (satin stitch circle)

You can use one color throughout, if desired. Colors provide stops for each step of the process.

Color One: Placement line. Hoop stabilizer and sew color one. This gives you the placement line for your fabrics.

Color Two: Place edging fabric, batting, and top fabric over placement line. Sew color two to tack fabric down.

Color Three: Sew narrow zigzag to provide further stabilization for the layers of fabric and batting. After sewing, trim batting and top fabric as close as possible to the outside of narrow zigzag line. It's okay if you cut a few stitches in the process -- the fabrics are well stabilized and will have further stitching on top later. Be sure not to trim edging fabric. I usually trim one layer at a time to assure that I'm trimming as closely as possible and to prevent me from accidently cutting the edging fabric.

If you're adding a design to the center, sew it at this time.

Color Four: Satin stitch to cover raw edges of fabrics. Watch this as it sews. Because it's sewing a circle, the fabric will pucker a little as you sew around. That actually makes it easier to turn later. Just be sure that you don't accidently sew a tuck of the puckered fabric as you sew the satin stitches.

Color Five: Place backing fabric pieces over hoop, right sides down, overlapping about 1/2". If you're going to use steam a seam or similar product to finish the seam, put in place now but do not press. Sew in place with color five. Remove from hoop and trim leaving a 1/8inch to 1/4 inch seam allowance. Turn through opening in back. Smooth edges using a turning device or rounded object like the handle of a spoon. Press and close back with slip stitch or press the steam a seam or similar product.

These are so cute, thank you! I cannot seem to download them though. I have selected the pes format and it cannot open on my computer and shows a blank sheet.

Is there something different I should be doing? Thanks for any help!

I stitched this out tonight and it turned out just perfect. Thank you. I added the sunshine design that Embroidery Library gave us recently and by using the 4x4 and reducing it as much as my machine would allow it fit in the center.

Thank you for sharing your work. This larger, round design will be very useful especially for the men who seem to be intimidated by the 4x4 coasters.

Thank you, I just love these and want to make some for christmas. I like the stitching on the two green ones. Is there a way you could dl those in DBC or a grid in the center? If not, I do appreciate your design here, and still will use the blank-thanks again toogie

toogie, if the designs she used on the coasters are from other sites, or purchased form Cute Emb, she wouldn't be able to put them in DBC. The only way that she could put them in DBC is if they are her designs that she digitized herself.

Forgot to say that you should fold/press a 1/4" hem to the wrong side on the backing fabric before placing it over the hoop so you have a finished edge. Sorry!
