All of my "over the years" boughten and free designs are gone :( Hubby thought he was doing a favor by transfering them from one external drive to another, but instead of "copy and paste", he did it differently and during the process the new drive was damaged and ALL DESIGNS GONE.

TIP: copy and paste and only delete after the transfer, etc. is over and your designs are "safe and sound"!
Have a great day,

Christie, do not despair. They may still be there. Do you have a computer expert who can help you? Please try to see an expert and you may be surprised. Do NOT empty your trash! Hugs. Jan

Christie I hope somehow, somewhere you will be able to recover them all *2U

Christie, my guess is that he "moved" the data. If that is the case, then there are no "deleted" files in the trash. System Restore only works for drivers and software. It often works to help remove viruses, as they are actually (unwanted) software. I hope you have been able to recover your files. If you have not tried Recuva give it a go and let us know what you find.

Husbands are wonderful. BUT, sometimes it is best to check before deleting. I had this happen with family pictures that were lost - forever. Now, he bought me an external backup system.

Hi Christie, I am new to Cute Embroidery and I love the site. Hate to hear you lost your designs. I'm sure hubby feels just awful! Something that might help ladies and gents out here. Purchase a CD-RW make sure the cd is re-writeable. Put the cd in your cd drive on the pc and when you download something burn it to the CD-RW, as a backup. If you lose the hard drive the cd with all of your precious information will be burned out to the cd. Again pleased to meet you and as I have looked around this site, I've seen your work and it is lovely!

Can you do a system restore to before he "helped you"?

Sorry, System Restore only works for software programs and driver updates. It won't help with data files.

Christie, I am so sorry. In 2009, I lost a lot of designs trying to back up to CD's. Fortunately, I was able to retrieve many of my purchased designs from the sites where purchased. I always print out a receipt for each order and file in notebooks. It took me almost 2 years. The freebies were gone forever except the sites that you go through their baskets to download. All but a couple of sites were glad to help me and the ones that did not, I no longer buy from them. Only advise I can offer is to keep good notes as you try to retrieve your designs as it is confusing who you have asked and who has replied. I wish you best of luck. Kay

I forgot to mention something else. I never back up to one single place. Never. Always at least 2 different places. I learned the hard way. Have an external HD and also a large jump drive. I used dvds until I got so many designs that I was having to burn 2 for each section. I back up everything once a month. And I NEVER keep both backups in the same place. Store one in the van and one in here. And have been known to do a third one if we're expecting bad weather in the future. I've got too much into my embroidery to loose everything, again.

I hope you can find them in the deleted file. There is hope, a computer programmer may be able to rescue them from the hidden files.

Dearie, me!!! Oh I am sorry to hear of this mishap. Did you perhaps check you "delete" folder - they might still be there. I do hope you can find some or most back again. Good luck.

OMG! I have enough trouble doing things myself. I don't need anybody else to help me screw up. I know he must feel horrible. But are you sure all is lost? Take the drive somewhere and see if they can recover. You might be surprised. Hope so.

Oh Christie I'm so sorry for you. Hope your hubby is a better runner than computer specialist ;o) I would follow rescuer tip or go to a specialist (the bill goes to hubby for his favor *lol*)
My hard disk got damaged in April (the structure was lost - the files are there but you canot find them) and I'm still downloading some of my purchased designs. Emlibrary, Embroiderydesigns.com, secretsof, Urban Threads, Bunnycup and many more have your order history where you can download again.
If you cannot remember your password they send you a new one (I had also lost the mails saved on my desktop - all the registrations and download-links were gone too).
That's the disadvantage of a membership: All the designs I have dl during my membership at amazing (ended 10 days before the crash!) were gone :-(
Greetings, Bettina

Someone's hubby is in hotter water than mine. My NSDH (not so...) decided that he was tired of his internet not working or being slow, and called and cancelled the internet and the wall phone (poor rural service signal). Then he told me. I had at least 8 free font downloads in progress and have two subscriptions that roll across the internet on a regular basis, plus my computer was pitching a fit about not being able to update the security program.

We are again on speaking terms, but it came at great cost! After much "discussion" he now has clarity about how important all this is to me and that I need communication about potential service disruptions. Whew - Stress!

I cannot imagine what you are going through losing your designs. I hope that you will be able to retrieve them somehow. Thank goodness my DH knows less about computers than I do!!! Hugs Sarah.

My hard drive crashed years ago and I was in shock because 85% of my designs were in there. I ran across a young man who was shopping in a computer store and he asked me if I had automatic back up etc (I do now, I bought a Seagate external that I set to automatically back up as I am downloading). Anyway the man said he might be able to retrieve my designs, as he also built computers. He said the cost would be $80. I am a very very very frugal person and I all but knocked him down handing him the money. He did a great job and 2 DVD's later, I had all my files except two, which were repeats. Good luck to you on a retrieval. I know yours is different situation but sometimes restoring your computer to an earlier time will retrieve things.

I am afraid "System Restore" only restores programs it will not bring back deleted files. The best option is going to a professional but when that is not possible the program Recuva is a good choice.

Usually info on a hard drive can be retrieved. Take it to a pro and check it out. It may cost $$ but it may well be worth it.

You can use Carbonite or another cloud service for secure back up. They charge a yearly fee to protect you data and you can access any folder at any time. I strongly recommend.

Christie I am thinking of you. So sorry to hear what has happened but as others say that with the knowledge they are probably somewhere, it is just where the somewhere is. My husband knows nothing about computers and I intend that it stays that way.

Dear Christie,

How's your heart? I think mine would be pounding wildly and I'd need to go out for a walk.

With regards to the designs, I'm sure they won't all be gone, but in cyberspace somewhere. I don't think you can ever really delete what is on computers these days, so good luck with it all Christie. Should I send flowers to the hospital for your hubby? he he he!

Love and blessings Chris

Someone is going to be "In the dog house" for some time. I have a number of sites that I buy from quite frequently like Embroidery Library and a number of others. They keep a record of your purchases and you can download again and again years later, too. You might want to check with those sites that you had done business with. They might be able to help you.
I have also placed all my designs onto two different memory sticks, CD's and an external hard drive.
One other note someone once told me you never truly delete anything. Maybe there is hope.

If you have not done too much to the old drive, you MIGHT be able to recover the files. Try recuva a free tool you can download. Google it and I hope it can save them all for you.
