Suggest that you back up files to Dropbox, SkyDrive or google drive. I use all three. We just finished scanning in 60+ years of photos, labeling them and putting them on SkyDrive where they are sorted into folders. In addition, we have them saved on DVDs. Hard drives do go bad sometimes, so, while I use them, everything on them is backed up on disks...just in case. Before storing on your hard drive, put copies on DVD or CDs. When the tornados hit Oklahoma, and I heard so many lament the loss of family photos, I wish they had know to upload copies of all their photos to "cloud" storage.
Yes, this is terrible. Luckily we did not lost everything but the last backup was 10month ago and we could not recover everything. It was not a virus or something from the software. The hard disk was damaged and lost the structure. The datas were there but the system was not aible to find them again :o(
So I am busy making back-ups now ;-)
Greetings, Bettina
Thanks for the reminder. If anyone gets a new computer, get a second hard drive installed and have an automatic backup program set for your second hard drive. This doesn't mean that you DON'T backup to DVDs or CDs, but it gives you a better chance of not losing everything.
Thank goodness you and others remind us to back up our designs. I have also been doing a backup on the designs I really value.
