My darling nephew played games on my computer this weekend and I just noticed my folder with A-J of the sweet baby font is gone. I still have K and L. Does anybody know if/how to recover files on Windows 8? I tried Remo Recovery (free) but no luck. Thanks for any suggestions...

I hope it comes around again for you, too bad they were not misplaced.

I know. I didn't have specific plans for the font or anything just too cute not to collect.

Found the same font (in applique) on OPW for only a few dollars :-)

When you found the B and the G, did you happen to notice which file folder they were in? If you look to see where they are, you may find the remainder of your files. I've accidentally moved a folder in to another folder by mistake, and only found it when doing a system wide search. Maybe this font will be offered at a discount rate when all of the letters are available. Or maybe a good sale will happen on the subscription, and you'll be able to download everything site-wide!! Good luck with the search.

The accidental moving happened to me a lot with Windows 7. I hope you find them, and they may come around again.

The B and G were in a list of 14,000 files that had been deleted, no folders, they said they were too corrupt to open. Searched 2 more times but found no more.

It did recover babyB and babyG but when I tried to open them I got an error message. Just glad it wasn't something I paid for. I couldn't believe all of the old stuff in the recovery....stuff I deleted 4 months ago. I found out how to turn on file history but still need to work on delete settings. Thanks for all the help :-)

Now, you know one of the government secrets...lol
If you could not recover them, perhaps they are still there someplace.
Thanks for letting us know how it turned out.

Hope you can find what is missing. I have to say you are very brave to let your nephew play on your computer. My grandson is banned from mine and that was before he removed a number of keys from his fathers and ruined it. My sewing room is also a no go area for him. The first place I would look is the recycle bin and I hope that nothing else has gone

My nephew loves my sewing machine too. I've had to tell him that they are sharp and might bite him, especially if it's moving. He wears a thimble on each finger and watches them run.

I'm on pins and needles...did you recover the missing files with Recuva?

You could always buy a membership to CUTE and get them in the free designs.

System restore ONLY restores the system and programs. It does not restore the deleted files like pictures etc. If "File History" does not work, then Recuva is a great option -- at least it works well with Windows 7. I have not yet tried it on Windows 8

It's running and have fingers crossed. Glad it's not some files I paid for, don't have many of those. There should be a YouTube tutorial for "how to frantically recover deleted embroidery files of a font that takes a month to collect" it would be po

LOL I will get right on that...right after I have finished my list of things to do. LOL
I am sure someone will come up with one very soon!
When you are done make sure you have the "Shadow Copy" feature turned on. Check your "File History" settings.

Still waiting for the scan to finish....I'm going to see what I can learn from settings before the "big guy" comes back to visit this weekend ;-)

Good information. I thought that the files weren't known to be deleted for sure, though. I'm guessing that you mean that restore doesn't move/alter/change files/folders that were just moved from desktop to documents, for example. No wonder you are called "rescuer"! There is so much to be learned! I'm glad to hear about Recuva...just in case.:)

Be sure to check your "delete" settings. In Windows 8 there is no confirmation of the delete. (You might be able to turn that on???) but it is supposed to just put it all in the Recycle Bin without any further information from the user.
You might want to set up a user account for the computer genius. One with no rights or abilities to delete anything. LOL

kylasm by kylasm 06 May 2013

I've got to check that too. Mine asks if you are sure you want to delete but of course he would click yes. This boy can go to start and select webcam so he can watch himself sing twinkle, twinkle little star!

This was the only thing I know is missing because I went to move K and L to the folder but the folder was gone. I have maybe 100 zip files that I need to open and sort about that many photos of my nephew, the babies I babysit and the dogs...I could be missing some of these and not be able to tell.

The folder also could be dragged and dropped on a tool bar or in what you might not consider a regular folder. Keep searching.

Maybe you could try a restore date.

First of all, did you check your recycle bin? If they are not there, then do not download anything or delete anything from your hard drive. There is a free open source program that will allow you to recover your files. It is called "Recuva". I asked my son about it, and he highly recommended it.
But if a recovery tool doesn't work for you, then look at your computer's daily log. Perhaps you will find activity that shows you what happened to your files.
One other idea is "system restore", where you restore to a known safe point, like somewhere mid week last week. I don't know if it will rename files for you. Is this the only thing you lost?
For future reference, I would ALWAYS copy files to a secondary media for safe keeping. For example, I use an external hard drive. Some use a CD or DVD. Others use a USB drive. Good luck!!!

I'm trying this, it says it can take an hour to run so letting it do that. Thanks for the help:-)

Ok so here is a video you can watch. If you don't have a back-up file there is (often) a "shadow copy". Watch the video (under "previous versions") and let me know if you need more help.
Please, let us all know if it solves your problem.

I watched that a few hours ago but it's only Windows 7, didn't work for Windows 8. Thanks for the help :-)

rescuer by rescuer 06 May 2013

Have you looked to see if "File History" can help? If it was turned on before the file was deleted, then it might work for you.
System restore only works on programs not files or folders.

kylasm by kylasm 06 May 2013

File history was not on, I'm still new to computers and mostly use default settings unless I know what I'm changing, lol . I have restored my system once so I knew it would not recover my files though :-)

I agree with rescurer it my have been renamed or he may have moved it rather than deleted it, did you look in the recycle bin?

It wasn't in the recycle bin, searched the laptop and desktop for each letter and the folder name then looked at recently modified. Nothing. He's only 3, didn't think he could do much but he does know to click on pop ups :-(

Have you tried searching for a single file by using the name of a missing file? Sometimes, folders get renamed instead of deleted.

Yes, that was my first thought. Maybe I accidently moved it when sorting my files or sent it to my Homegroup but can't find A-J or the folder. I only keep a couple folders here for font collecting then when it's complete I move it to my desktop.
