Our computer is dying; I want to replace it with a Window's 7 (not the new system 8). Any suggestions since downloading, storing and altering embroidery designs is most important? Also I am not a techie.

Thanks for any input.

I have just bought a new laptop for my sewing stuff. I went for Windows 7 Pro. I got the computer guy to install my sewing digitizer programs and the Embird 2013. I am still finding my way with it. I was happier with the XP but if you cannot buy it anymore you just have to go with the times. I wish you luck with what ever you go with. Shirley

My sewing laptop just recently died and I took it to a local computer repair shop to see if it could be saved. Alas, not, but when they asked what I do with it, they suggested that they could sell me a computer with Windows 7 as they said Windows 8 works more like a tablet, which is not what I wanted. So if you go to computer stores, not the big name ones, you might find one with computers that have Windows 7 installed.

I have Windows 7, 64-bit and works fine. It works well with Embird 2013 for 64-bit for editing embroideries. It worked well with Embird 2010 too. In case I have to replace my computer, I would buy one with Windows 8, 64-bit. I have no need for Windows XP.

I am a techie. :)
You can still buy a new computer with windows pre-installed until sometime in 2014. The best way is to order one online. The basic video card will work for you and most computers come with at least a terabyte of hard drive (data storage) space. Just make sure when you order, that you confirm you want the Windows 7 version. Get the Professional (Business) or Ultimate version as there is a way to use XP within those versions. I am working on a tutorial to help non-techie Cuties with that (it will take me quite some time) but the Home version of Windows (the cheapest) will not allow the computer to run in XP mode. If you have specific questions while shopping for a computer, send me a PM I would be happy to help if I can.

Thank you so very much. Wish you already had that tutorial. You have answered one question; home vs pro. I had already decided that pro probably made more sense but didn't know enough to make a sound decision.

I am not a techie either and can find my way around things in Windows8 I went from xp to windows8. It just has things in different places and once you know where they are all seems to flow. Hope you find what you want. Hugs Sally

You are encouraging me. A nephew that is real computer savvy (creates software for banks) thinks I should go Windows 8 but our middle son who knows me best said to go to 7.

I got Windows 8 recently and it is fine. I think there have been many scare stories about it. It works fine with my PE 8 softwear too. Good Luck with your choices

Thank you. Wish this XP would just perk up but after 7 years, it is tired and wasn't good out of the box
