I found some cute fabric at Walmart that is already shirred and ready to sew up on one side to make a sundress for my granddaughters. Great deal on sale for $2 a yard. My question to you and how to measure it...do I just measure around the bust and cut that much and sew up the side?

I would sew it up the back - but I think you have the right idea.

Boy what a lucky find! I just bought two pieces (tiered with 2 fabrics and layers) and it was $11 per yard! Made up really cute and I will send to Texas for DGD's. I used ribbon for straps and tied bows (This time I used 2 narrow ribbons on front and back).

Thanks for the reply everyone! Yes I am happy our Walmart got the fabric back in our WV store. I can't believe they ever took it away with the sewing guilds, quilters, crafters in the area. What knuckle head who ever had that thought must have been fired. Hang in there girls...I'm sure yours will be back full force, as well. My only complaint is that they don't carry the embroidery stabilizers that they use to....maybe I should dictate to them what they need...lol

I don't know the ages of your grandaughters but if they are old enough this is a wonderful fabric to let them start sewing. Even if they have to sit on your lap so you can guide it, just one long seam and they have made themselves a dress or skirt is it is the shorter length.

Good - glad you have fabric at your WalMart. Ours didn't bring back the fabric (yet???). They have brought in mini bolts, which I don't care for.
Will be waiting to see how it turns out!

Good for you! Our WalMart stores here in Erie, PA USA area finally got fabric back. However, since seemingly NONE of the managers in any of the stores ever sewed a stitch, they're having a heck of a time getting it organized. I've been giving them pointers and lectures, and the occasional small fit. One store finally sort of grouped the bolts by price, which was nice, and put the price tags on the shelves. The others, well, let's just say I've been praying for patience. But at least the fabric is back, even if finding it is quite a hunt. So glad you found this, and it was $2. Put your creation in Projects when you've finished! Hugs, Marji

They measure with the gathered part so 1 yard is actually much bigger. I bought it in the adult length, one yard fit me and I wear a large to XL top. The excess cut off the side when I was done made enough to put straps on it. Did 2 of them and they fit fine. Very easy and super fast to make! Have fun!

This is so cute!

I put it on my daughter and placed the straps exactly over her bra straps to hide them. Even before she had much there to hold up a dress she still preferred straps so the dress wouldn't slip.

Yes, go by what is comfortable around the bust. It stretches so it will be a few inches smaller then the actual bust. The rest will go straight down to the hem. Straps are nice to add too.

A little extra from the bottom area can be used for straps.
