I have found that it is safer to stay with my baby when she is working (ask me how I know LOL!!!) When I leave the room she is given a rest as well. It has never failed that if I leave the machine and go anywhere out of hearing distance something will go wrong so I have learned not to trust her...
SEAMS LIKE SHE IS A BIT TEMPERMENTAL, LIKE MOST OF OURS, HAHAHA IT'S LIKE BABYSITTING
well I always stay with my machine. I do have a machine who's afraid to be left alone. When I leave it behind alone, it often refuses to do his good job.because it's afraid I 'll leave it.LOL
I usually sew anything else I can on my other machine while my new brother is embroidery I stich on the old Rose I have
Sometimes I just sit and watch it, sometimes I have the TV on if a good show on which isn't often. Maybe put in a video to watch, crochet, hoop the next project, cut out material. Really depends on what's sewing. I do find when I sit and watch it, it seems to go so slow lol. Ever heard the saying "A watched pot never boils" Well a watched machine goes much slower. lol
Sometimes I get supper ready since my machine is right by the kitchen.
Some times in my more productive days I will have both my embroidery machines going, and be on my regular sewing machine putting a zip in or a handle on some thing. on boring days while I embroider I do the iorning on my cutting out table that is next to my machines. if I do leave the room it is just to go in the kitchen that is the next to the sewing room. I would not leave them to go any further, Im sure they would know and get stuck.ha ha Pam.
wow ladies it would appear that most of us have a an issue when leaving the machine @ one time or another! I have learned something from all of htese responses sew thank you all & **** 4 u2. I have learned that if you know your design well then you know it stitches out well sew then I can try leaving the machine! & I will
It depends, if I am doing for someone else, I stay, for myself, I leave and the machine usually knows the difference. Betty
I read a book or email....sometimes I just clean up the sewing room....or get the next thing hooped. I don't leave it..Like everyone else the minute I walk out something happens.
I also sew on another machine. I have two emb. machines, and 3 othter reg machines, besides all my sergers..so.....
Sounds like I'm with most of you, I don't leave the machine for longer than it takes to run to the bathroom. Even then I'll probably stop it! I usually am on the computer while it's running or in the sewing room doing something else. I could never leave the room for long because although it beeps, I can't always hear it. Can women have a demanding mistress?
I read a few replies and it seems to me that I am not the only one who has a machine with "separation anxiety"
I don't go far away without stopping the machine...and never for more than a few minutes (seconds)
MJDG
I usually in the area doing other things. Now that I have a Bernina 430, the thread doesn't break all the time, so I don't have to watch it like a hawk. It also beeps if something goes wrong.
Every time I've left the machine, it screws up, big time. I sit there like a lump on a log and watch the silly thing. My grand son in law will sit and watch as long as I let him, just drooling! And he's not a dummy, just loves to watch. If I could teach him to push the stop button if it messes up.................
Knows I'm gone? The silly thing is just waiting for me to move away. Then it hick ups and brings me right back. Even hubby listens now and if there is a different sound he tells me, even if I'm watching it.
There have been a couple of times I tried leaving...never fails every time I leave it has some sort of issue. I think it knows when I leave so I don't do it anymore and it works like a charm!
I never leave the room without stopping. For some designs that I have done a bunch (like FSL things) I will do other things while it runs - like Cute! Otherwise I watch it stitch out. Agree with everyone, machine does not like to be lonely and will throw a fit if it is!
Depends on the density of the design. I will NOT leave sewing room when I am doing any designs I am unsure of. I have on occasion sat watching it, lol! Not very productive I must admit, but it can be hypnotizing, lol! Most of the time I am sewing, ironing, cutting out another project, finishing s project or something in my sewing room as my machine runs. If I have used the design many times before I will let the machine run while making supper and run make to change colors, lol! I usually have the radio or a book on CD going while I am embroiderying or sewing also.
Diane
I watch. I may grab something really quick... different color of thread by I don't let my eyes leave my machine. Besides I can't wait to see how it stitches. Pictures of designs are great but nothing is better than seeing the actual stitch out :))))
I am afraid I watch like a hawk. In the 3 years I have been doing ME, I have only left my machine once. I am sure the machine felt lonely and decided to play up. They are sooooo clever these machines!!!!
It depends what I am sewing. If it is a Fsl and it is one color I leave the room, but always stay near hearing distance. Most of the time I m close to it, watching it sewing or at the same time dowloading designs or catching up all the messages that have been posted at this side :-)
Most of the time I stay right next to the machine, watching it and waiting for the next colour change .. which isn't long when your biggest hoop is 4x4. On the rare times I've walked away something went wrong and like everyone else I agree that you machine just KNOWS you walked off lol. :) xXx
LOL! I know exactly what you mean, it seems like it knows you just left the room. I can only do 4x4 and smaller too.
I am addicted to watching the needle and drifting off to another world!!!I do leave the room sometimes
I never leave the machine for more than a few minutes as I am afraid of a major "Mess" ask me how I know!! Kay
I never leave the machine alone in the room. I know it has a built in sensor that knows if I leave and messes up. Lately I am on the sewing machine, or cut out material, organize my craft room (never ending) or organize embroidery files (never ending also). Should I have to leave the room I stop the machine.
I have learned not to go far. My machine will act up the min I get up to leave. Nothing worse that sitting on the toilet and hear it go bang bang bang. So I usually trim jumps, surf the web, play Hotshots or Zuma ( addicted to them )
wow some intresting comment s Lor. Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllll I leave mine all the time .It is in the basement beside the hot wood stove and i run all day up and down 15 stairs (i call this exercise)
When i walk Peeko 2 or 3 times i leave it ,when i go get the mail i leave it.When i cook whatever it just waits for me to come and change the thread .Yes it has ate a few things but thats normals.Well i am off to stir my pot of fudge and empty the dryer on my way to make a coffee lol hugs carolyn
holy cow! now thats productive, no wonder you get sew much done, you are sew organised!
I have sometimes dashed to the washer or dryer, but I usually stay with the machine & knit......
I try to do work very close to my machine. I will try to sneak into the laundry room once in a while, but it invariably knows and acts like a spoiled child.LOL
When my machines are running I will hoop next project. tidy studio, digitize, spend time on cute or facebook, start dinner go shopping, hang out washing, clean the house. I am way to manic to stand there and watch my machine stitching.
I must be naughty I will often put my machine going and go shopping and then do colour change when I come home or else I am doing cooking or cleaning while machine go merrily along
Today, I stayed right there with the machine... and we chatted. I should have just walked away and saved the material and thread... to say nothing of my patience. But, no. I stayed there thru it all... broken thread, bobbin hiccup, a few partial unhoopings (when I was ready to put the back on for tea lights) and... of course the jam where it eats the material. When it came to a complete unhooping, totally my fault, I walked away.
Someone mentioned how the machine is like a child... today, it KNEW I was under a personal deadline. My expectations have been adjusted and I am approaching my "happy place".
I don't often leave the machine... especially when it is this close to the annual checkup.
It depends on whats stitching but i do a lot of multitasking but I don't leave the area because its like asking for trouble-my machine knows when I leave. LOL
I have my machine in front of the TV. Luckily I don't have any close neighbours so then I turn the TV up louder than my machine. I sit with the machine, because you can bet once I leave the room the machine will play up.
when I am stitching - I start that 1st - then I can start the other machine - if I need them both going - depending on color changes - I might be running back and forth between the 2 of them - from minute to minute or have lots of time - to do other things - I like to be in the room - if I can - but I don't limit myself to that - I know which designs I can safely leave the room, as well - but I can get on my PC and do email or come to CUTE and post comments and give flowers. If I have a phone call to make - if it isn't going to be long - I can do that easily - I don't crochet or any handy work - but if I am putting a project together - one that needs time to do - I like to do the embellishments and fun things - right next to the machine - so I can watch it - progress not perfection.
sorry, wrong spot. I have my machines in what should be the dinning room so it is central to the house. I tell them to be good boys and I'll be back in a minute. Then i clean, cook, whatever. I would never get anything done if I had to sit with them all the time. xx
oops forgot the pic.

hahaha... Can't help but laugh at this one Loralye, Just this morning, I was doing an applique and had everything out of the way, left my machine to turn on my hair curler, less than 10 steps away but in another room... I came back and that stupid thing decided to eat my dress... ARRRGGGGG.... I had to stop it, take the needle out and then the foot out and then carefully clip the stitchs so I could salvage the dress (custom order), with out ruining it. I took a picture of it to show someone so I'm sharing it with you... LOL.....
I've left the room before, and my machine ate my fabric! Unless the fabric around my hoop is secure and won't fall into the embroidery field, then I have to stay right there at it. I have one machine, so sometimes I straighten my threads out, but mostly I sit and watch it sew, and daydream.
I have a brother pr1000 and when its doing its 'thing' I usually go and do a little housework make the beds clean the bathroom but I am always within hearing distance
I AM AT THE PHAFF DOING REGULAR SEWING,MENDING OR MAKING DOG COATS...OR SEAM RIPPING SOMRTHING I DID WRONG...LOL I CANT STAND SITTING THERE..OR IAM ON THE COMPUTER TALKING TO YOU GUYS,,,,,LOV LUCY
i have learn never to lett see my back
some times machines are children
when they see your back it go wrong lol
so i sit on my machine with hard designs
not when it go easy
hugs Sonja
I use other sewing machine, cutout something, look through designs, sort thread, only leave room if its a flat piece of material or fsl, not to often. or just try to straighten up(which does'nt work to often). LOL
Have my computer next to the machine and look at something else maybe E-Bay whilst it is running or looking for next pattern and colours, always take quite awhile to sort colours too. find if I leave the room something goes wrong lol, so mostly stop the machine than.
I read, sort my designs, iron, hoover think of new projects, cur those etc but I am always doing something. I often use my simple sewing machine to finish projects.
When I am really into my embroidery I have both machines going - this keeps me busy, but even with that sometimes I have to wait. I have read, or straightened my room some. I do have some designs that I know that I can leave the room and let the machine do its thing, but sure not many that I trust.
I sew on my regular machine or cut out blocks or get fabrics pressed for the next project, get another hoop ready and listen to the radio or CD, or look for a pattern.....always doing something getting ready for the next move......
glad to see you getting stronger every day.....Marina told me you asked about me last week....I am still here and prayed for you and still do each day.....you are one gutsy lady from Canada......love you and missed you so much.....
ohhhhhhhhhhh I didn't know it was you! WOW hello my friend & I miss you sew very much too! I think about you & can't wait till we chat again! Hugs & Love Loralye
I do some ironing or hooping of the next piece of work. Sometimes even start peeling potatoes or something that I can do there in the work room. I do leave it for very short periods, when I need to do something in the kitchen, or making the bed. Never for too long though.
well for me if the design is going to be long (more than 20 minutes for me) I definately do something else but I don't leave the room! I play on the generic Ipad thingy or I read a magazine. Sometimes I crochet too.
