Bodie Light Houses beautiful. Cape Hatteras has been called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" because of the treacherous coastline. Shifting sands and unseen reefs have wrecked many a passing ship. Kitty Hawk, is a stretch of sand made famous by the 1st flight of the Wright brothers. Appalachian Mts. make for a beautiful hiking or camping trip. You could read volumes of history on this state.

Go to www.50states.com and then on to the nicknames. But a brief overview is during the Civil War, the state of NC was know for tar, pitch, & turpentine. At one point as a group of men were marching by someone made some comments about tar, answered back, etc. In the end Robert E. Lee said, "God bless those NC Tarheels boys!" That's sorta it. You can read it better if you go to the site!!
