The state symbol is a pelican 'vulning' herself. When food is scarce a mother pelican will literally feed her chicks from herself. It is supposed to represent the sacrifices made by our politicians for the constituants. Or so I have been told

Hmmm, I like the philosophy behind the Mom pelican. But your LA politicians must be more altruistic than any state I've lived in. I don't know many who give up anything for their constituents.

The pelican is the State bird. Miles and miles of coastline, islands, sandbars, marshes, and bayous. LA provides a winter home for half the wild ducks and geese in North America. The largest Mardi Gras in the States is found in New Orleans. To wild for me though. I think your pelican is cute. At least he is not sitting in oil.
