There is a Yahoo Group called: LearningToSmock

This a Description... I copied it from the group's homepage. If you join it, you can ask people who know a lot about it.

This group was created for those that would like to learn how to smock and hand and machine embroider from the basic stitches to those that are more advanced. We will discuss different hand and machine smocking techniques and designs, as well as hand and machine embroidery. All questions and advice about construction of any type of garment is always welcome! Or you can just gab away about anything going on in your life right now!

I will post a monthly freebie set that will be composed of matching hand/machine smocking designs, plus a matching machine embroidery/applique design just for the group. You can get it for free while everyone else will have to pay for it in the store!

I do like to have little classes on different techniques from time to time, so feel free to voice your opinion on what you would like to see next!

Had a go at this many years ago. It will never be as good as hand-smocking because it is impossible to sew exactly enough. The whole idea of smocking is that after the embroidery is finished and the thread that draws up the pleats (which are then embroidered) has been removed, it gives you a 'stretchy' piece. This usually becomes the bodice of you dress etc.

I would like to try it but I think I'll take a class first. BTW, love Elizabeths embroideries.
