Unless it is very thick I would use stabalizer. I did for the thin type of canvas for extra support.

I am making magnets both sides are out of canvas and I place a piece of craft weight stabilizer on the back piece just to give some extra stiffness.

I have embroidered on canvas before, and I would definitely recommend using stabilizer. Try tear away... Good luck with your hooping - canvas will give you a work out!

What needle's type do you need?

A good way to tell what size needle is to try to gently pierce the fabric and if it goes through without pushing it will work. P.S. I don't us stabilizer on canvas but I do hoop it tight.

letvia, I believe it would depend on the thickness of your canvas. Most of them are actually thick enough that you wouldn't need a stabilizer, but it never hurts to use a tear away, just to be safe and secure that your embroidery on this canvas item is going to stand up to the test of time. A flower for you.
