I'm beginning to feel a little paranoid. One of my designs has been featured in the projects on Cute recently and the stitcher criticised it because it had 12 thread changes and she had to stay by her machine ... not only did she find fault, so did several of her respondents, who agreed with her. Well, I don't know how to digitise a design which has 12 colours without having 12 thread changes - I can't see how that would work - and more to the point, up to now I have put all my designs out there for anyone to use for FREE. If she'd bought the design then she'd be entitled to complain - if there was actually anything wrong with it, that is - but I give mine away as what until now I thought was a service. In view of the number of people whose opinions I value who joined in the criticism I'm now thinking of reconsidering this. I still won't charge for my designs, I made that decision when I started out designing and digitising, but I'm now feeling disinclined to just put them out as freely available to anyone who wants to download them; if anyone would like to use my designs they will still be able to have them free, but they'll have to email me to ask for them (it will also save me a considerable amount of work, in future I will just do them in my own format and convert those requested into whatever format is wanted at the time.) Unfortunately, 12 colour designs will still have 12 thread changes! Love from Dianne x x x

Of course 12 different thread colors equals 12 different thread changes! Any way you do the math, it is the same. I hate to jump on people but seriously, I have a pet peeve about those who are offered a free design then request it in another format and size. I wish they could see it as it is--a gift. You wouldn't ask someone who gave you a set of towels for another color or size, would you? So why ask for changes in a perfectly good design someone offers you for free? It takes just as long to digitize a free design as it does on one a person is going to sell.Luckily, most people take the gift as offered and say thank you. It's always the complainers who get noticed. I wouldn't worry about them Dianne, there are more folks who appreciate your work and designs than those who do not. Some people just aren't happy unless they are complaining about something! Good luck to you and thank you for all you have given.

Girl, well they will not love me.
as I just got finished doing some awesome cute Teddies and they use what 9 colors but will have some where up to 30 color changes...
If they New what they were doing??? then they would know that is not about the count! it is about Great digitizing!!!!! and Pull compensation.
that we Can get lazy, combined the colors and have distorted pull and what not.. but if you really, really wanted and off the chain design you would have all kind of color changes after each section of a design.
It is all about keeping a Design flat and not have a ripple effect. Or a bunch of Jumps.. Machines do not like jumps. and I do not want to wear out my Machine doing trims, as trims slows down the production of a Stitch out. so it is taught to us to do color changes. or about the same either way. but to judge some one on this is not right.. and is in my book a Little Catty. No one knows what a Digitizer is thinking when they are working and there is a Reason for what do, it may not be right, but who's to say or judge but in my Training a good design is worth a lot of color changes..

it's sad Dianne does not come on Cute anymore, she was a real Cutie and she made some beautiful designs, that most Cuties do love. But I don't see the reason why this post is back after almost 3 years.Unless It will bring Dianne back here, because she knows we miss her.

dianne I think your designs are wonderful.as for thread changes I have some designs I bought with 36 thread changes and love them .
that is the way it is with machine embrodery . I love your designs.
with hand embroidery you have to sit right with it and I love that some of my machine designs I wish I could hand embroidery.
she probable just wants something to complain about don't let her make you sad.

Why is it that people are so quick to criticize, but forget to give out positive praise. Negative words cut like a knife into our hearts. For every negative phrase it takes many positives to heal the wound, and often it leaves a scar.

I'm glad to see so many positivite comments. I too appreciate your designs and the effort and time you so freely give. Hugs to help heal the wound to your heart.

I don't know which design they were referring to, but I personally want to thank you for offering your designs. Yes, sometimes there are a lot of color changes, but I've found that those rich in color are the best and you were very generous to offer them. I am sorry that your feelings were hurt by some ungrateful people. Sending you (((HUGS)))

I don't know about anyone else but I appreciate the work that goes into things. It takes a person's time and her expense that she could use for other things. If someone would read instructions with their machine it would probably say it is best not to walk off from your machine anyway. Thank you for all the work all these digitisers do for all of us. They take their time and talent to give free designs to us and if you are not happy with the designs then don't download them but it is not polite or considerate for you criticize someone who is being nice. Think if it was you. How would you be hurt?

by rachap 24 Apr 2013

It's too bad but you can never please some people and of course it hurts your feelings when someone criticises you esp. when you have done something nice for them. It sounds like there are more cuties encouraging you tho so take solice in that. PS-What is the big deal about changing thread???I just for the fun of it I timed how long it took me to change mine, less than 10 seconds and that was with manually threading the needle. Life may be short but NOT that short!! Cheers & keep on with your great designs, wish I had your talent.

You are a talented and generous digitizer. Since I do not digitize, I admire and envy you. Many, many thanks for sharing with the inept and I hope you will ignore those that are having a bad day. Obviously, If one does not want to make twelve changes she/he should pick another design and not pick on the designer. Red work/black work is out there in abundance for those that don't want to change threads.

Some designs have 20 or more changes. I think if you like the design and want to embroider it then put up with the changes or pick something that uses only one colour. I just did one for my friend's birthday which had 22 changes and 52 minutes to stitch. I always watch my machine. I found out a while back if I left it,something was bound to happen. (ie; thread breaks). I sit and watch my machine and changed the thread when it was time to change. The design turns out great and my friend loved it. Don't stop posting your designs Diane , they are great. Hugs Lynn

No Dianne I don't think so!
I am new to machine embroidery and haven't done very much yet, but I have definitly dl your designs. I have read some of the replies and they have made some good points. Besides, if they don't like thread changes maybe they should get into another hobby.
Of course maybe they are just jealous that you can digitize and they can't!
I will eventually learn how, but for now I really appreciate the designs put on here by the other cuties.
Don't stop doing what you're doing because one person "NOT KNOWING" what they are doing as then they wouln't be using designs that have more color changes than they want to do.
Everyone else here seems to appreciate your designs and i would be a shame for you to let a person ruin it for you and the rest of us.
So: Keep up the good work!!

Here I have a nice anecdote for you, it is from digitizing expert John Deer's book "Digitizing made easy".
Some customers were complaining about a "poor" digitized design... after some conversation it turned out, that the complex design of 44 !! color changes had been treated by the customers with a color sorting software to limit the design to 26 stops.
This of course!! had a bad influence on the final result.
Bottom line: sometimes a good design requires 44 color changes.

Greetings

Hello dear Dianne,

first I have to say, that I usually stay always at my machine when it´s stitching, because I can act fastly if something happens and most important: I love to see the projects grow !!
and second: people who critisize your really great and cute designs you give us for free don´t know how much work it is to draw & digitalize them.
I love for example your dinos and I think you make a really great job !!
So don´t let you get a silly person down, if she don´t want to stitch your designs she should leave it- it´s better because she don´t deserve them at all !!
I love your designs and want to say once more thank you to you

I don't think you'r being touchy at all. It would make me feel the same way. I don't know the design you are talking about but, free is free, after all. To be honest, there were some free designs I downloaded and stitched out and they were less than perfect, but I would never complain - I don't have a right to because I didn't pay for the design. It's an unwritten rule here that not everyone is an expert digitizer and some people are still in the practicing stage. I for one, don't have a clue how to digitize so I REALLY don't have a right to complain.

I am so grateful for EVERYONE who posts on Freebies, and that woudl include you, too. There are so many designs that I have in my collection because of them.

Hope you feel better. No one knows why those people said what did, but it does sound like maybe a bit of cyber-bullying went on here... Don't stand for it by ignoring them and continue doing what you do. I will stand up for you anytime!

so, short and sweet:
please don't feel that way about all of us. many more of us are VERY GRATEFUL. if you do stop posting there are many like me wo won't get to enjoy your designs, as we don't know who to ask for what, and so we depend on the posted freebies.

12 is a lot, but you either feel it is worth and accept, or you don't use it! (or i have been known to do my own thing, and use te same color twice !)

Shame on them. 12 colors is nothing and adds character to the design. We all appreciate your hard work. If they want a plain design, duh don't change the thread. Just throwing my 2 bits in. If she doesn't want to do 12 thread changes then don't download the FREE design! Geeze... I don' mind CONSTRUCTIVE criticism
but to complain about the number of thread changes is just too much. She has 2 options.... don't download or download and stick to one color - no thread changes. Dear Dianne,
I am sorry that you were hurt. There is so much suffering in life that we cannot change, that it makes me sad to see suffering that need not be. The old adage, "Think before you speak" could be changed to "Think before you write." We are all real people with hopes and dreams and hearts. Perhaps the people who were critical of your design have never digitized. I know I have not been able to do so yet, and I am in awe of all those who have taken the plunge to learn to digitize. I am always grateful for the free designs that I do receive for they allow me to do so many nice things for family and friends which could not have come about without the generosity of you digitizers. This year, my New Year's resolution was to never download a free design without saying thank-you in writing to the digitizer. If I use the design in a project, I make the effort to send a picture of the completed project and an additional thank-you to the digitizer. Yes, these small actions take time and effort, but I do not believe that they can compare to all the time and effort that goes into those free designs that I receive. It's so easy to forget the reality that we are not just dealing with computers and files, but with grandmothers and grandchildren, single mothers and college students, dads and moms, and every manner of people. Please don't be saddened any longer, Dianne. Your initial reasons for offering your designs for free have not changed. The world is full of good people doing good with the help of your talent. Even when some people are thoughtless and hurtful,(I've done and said many thoughtless things in my life that I now regret) perhaps they will have learned from this experience that thoughtlessness caused you, a generous woman, pain. God bless you. Therese

Dianne, It is a sad fact, but there are some people who are going to complain, no matter what! These are troubled souls that can find no satisfaction or happiness in anything so they set out to make everyone feel the way that they do.
We, as a whole appreciate and love all that you do for us! Please try to just look the other way for the rude or unappreciative people. You can not fix their lives but you can be happy and satisfied with the kind of person that YOU ARE! It takes a caring, kind person to give of theirselves and their talents. The fact that we do have so many wonderful designers/digitizers right here among us that are willing to share the wonderful talents with us stands for itself! Those of us without the talent/skills to digitize really appreciate all of you who do!!!!! I really do not think this has much to do with you but in the minds of those who complain. Please do not let someone that is that miserable about everything pull you into there state of mind. You have the talent, you share it with all of us and there are only a few who do not know how to appreciate the good things. I am sorry that your feelings have been hurt but I do understand. It is hard to give freely of your talents and time to have someone not appreciate you! We as a whole love what you do and thank you very much! Hugs to you , Linda

I do appreciate your designs and your hard work. I love the designs that I have gotten from you. I wish that some people were not so rude. But you know how that goes you just can't please some people. If they do not like the design they should just delete it and go on with their stitching. Please try not to be offended with those kind of people. I myself have never encountered any complaints about your design. If it were not for digitizers like you and others on here I am sure that some of us would not have many designs to enjoy. Just say a little prayer for those kind that want to complain. Sara

Kinda goes back to the old adage 'No good deed goes unpunished'. Personally after lots of heartache and tears I've finally decided that in my old age if somebody doesn't like me, the way I cook, look, live, sew etc then it's their problem not mine! Therefore we that love and appreciate you ask that you simply ignore those ungrateful snobs. Dianne I'm not familiar with your designs but appreciate anyone who can do what you do. Anyone who picks out a design and it states that there are 12 colors/color changes should realize before they thread the needle that they are going to have to do it 11 more times. DUH! If you don't want to make alot of color changes there is a simple remedy, 'do redwork' designs. There are more people who don't complain and appreciate you for the talent you have chosen to share then there are 'whiners'.

Please don't feel this way. For every 1 complaint you will get 100 compliments - see it in that light. Ignore it and don't let comments steal your peace and happiness Anyway a lot of the designs I've bought has even more than 12 colour changes and I've done so because I like them and are prepared to sit next to machine and let it stitch them out and I definitely don't see the designs posted here in any other category. I download lots of them and then I was even prepared to buy them. I really appreciate every effort for all of you contributing to DBC it is not only the time to digitize it is the stitching out and testing and then it is the uploading which when looking at Projects can be time consuming. So from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU and to ALL OTHERS posting in DBC - Add this one to your compliment list Dianne.

Dear Dianne, I'm so sorry this happened to you too.

I agree with Teri, some people here are very rude and cruel. I had a very rude comment about the FSL apple alpha, as I used the software image in my website. In my daily apple freebies, sometimes I put images from the software, as I take one picture of the entire set, and it's really a big job take pictures separately, with the same brightness, contrast, size, to make look good for a website. Now I'm taking a picture of group of 4, editing to the same brightness and contrast, and splitting them to have one picture for each letter. It is not a perfect job, as you can see in my FSL badge alpha, but it's not a software image, and I'm not a photographer.

I hope this person is happy now, she must be, as she still visits my both websites more than 15 times a day!!!

I'm VERY picky with my designs, and I want to people have a joy when stitching my designs out, minimizing the jumps as much as possible, even when changing colors. Of course, all my FSLs don't have any jump.

I've been very depressed and that was a big add to my depression. It seems nothing works when you feel that way. Finaly, my depression was the cause I was taken to the hospital and was unconscious for 48 hours.

I'm so sorry to vent in your post.

A big hug for you, and believe me I do need a big hug too.

This is making me sad. Yoriko never let someone ruin your health over a FREEBIE. You are so good in what you do and gracious. I found that they are very unhappy people that act like that. Sending you hugs. Angie

Oh Yoriko, DON'T let anything ruin your health! I do know exactly how you felt, though, because I felt the same! People have been so kind and supportive today and I feel much happier! Lots of love

Don't let these people rent space in your head.
No matter what you do in life, there will be a few that criticize, and many who praise. I think you are great to try to digitize, and kind to offer designs to the group. Don't let them discourage you. We think you are great!

"Don't let these people rent space in your head." What a wonderful expression! Mind if I steal it and make it my "thought for the day?" Lots of love and thanks from Dianne x x x

Diane, I am so sorry that this happened. I do not know nor do I want to know who was critical. But I have embroidered long enough to know that not all people can digitize, I am one who will never be able to do it. I am so very grateful for those who can. I am also aware that it is my decision to download a design and to use it. I also make mistakes that the digitizer has no control over. As for the color changes; that is why I bought a multi-needle machine. I have embroidered designs that had 30 color changes. It was my choice to use it. I am one who will gladly e-mail you for designs if you choose to be gracious enough to offer them. I use PES format. Thank you for you many, many hours that you donated to us.

That was just WRONG of her to say such a thing!!! Shame on her!!! You can't have 12 colors without 12 changes--DUH!!! The more colors a design has, the prettier it is and worth the time stitching out. Thanx Diane for your time and hard work. And 100 times thanks for providing your designs to us. Don't let an unconsiderate person ruin it all because the majority DO NOT agree with HER!

Dianne, these critical folks are the kind I "give a good leaving alone!" I act as if they don't exist and don't waste my time or emotions on them because that is exactly what they deserve.

by rachap 26 May 2010

I do not think you are being touchy at all. Quite often the first ones to criticise are the very ones who can't or won't do for themselves so I'd keep that in mind and not worry about them. Your work is lovely and if it takes 20 threads to get it that way so be it!

I would be upset too Diane. When you put so much effort in a design you would hope for a thank you. 12 color changes isn't bad at all. I also find your designs don't use many jump stitches, now that is a true talent when it comes to digitizing. I am on disability from the military so therefore I couldn't afford to buy designs and I love the free designs by you and the other cuties. I hope the hurt and disappointment go away soon and you will once again upload your beautiful designs. Chin up girlfriend! Mary-Anne

12 colours 12 stops, Ok lets see if this person can sew the designs in one go and put it in projects to show us the results. Lucy has said it all . Just watching Meganne do a very small design take time and frustration. So Dianne you give to us what we cant do, thankyou for your designs, hard work and love in giving to us so freely.

dianne I love your designs.
I had one today that I bought had 30 thread changes and took 179 minutes to do it but it was beautiful. 12 thread changes is just a drop in the bucket I do a lot of designs that has 30 and more.

Please do not stop offering your designs, I have Embird Studio, and learning, I spend hours doing a very simple designs, sometimes I asked my self how can all of you, digitizer, can give us your work for free, I know by experience that takes a lot of your time to do a design, and if a design has 30 colors well you need to know that you will have to change it 30 times, there is no other way. so please ignore the complains.

by tweetee 26 May 2010

I agree with everyone here Dianne, if that person who is so ungrateful that they got a free design, and then have the GALL to complain about it, well then they are the one with the problem. Honestly some people really get me annoyed when they dont appreciate the hard work that others have done to make enjoyment for them. I personally love your designs that you give away, and appreciate ALL of the digitizers that work so hard to give us the free designs. If I found a problem with the design, then I would alert the digitizer so they could fix it, but winge and complain about 12 colour changes is ridiculous. I say to this person....GET A LIFE!!! If they didnt want to do 12 colour changes, then simply dont stich out the design. Her and her 'groupies' are just plain so-and-so's and dont know a good thing when it hits them in the face.

Ok, Ill get off my soap box now :-)

BUT from reading all of these postings we stand behind you and are very greatful for the designs that you create and share so freely with us. First let me say do not let the people that hurt your harden your heart to the ones that are so grateful for all that you do
Second I would like address the person that did this
1. read your owners manual it states in there the machine is not to be left unattended
2. you think 12 thread colors/changes is rough? Try 15 colors and 27 thread changes (freebie)
it is the price we pay for the hobby we chose.
3. I might also say maybe you are more of a redwork kind of person?

by anne55 26 May 2010

People complained about a FREE design that ONLY had 12 color changes? How ridiculous. I've only been doing this a little over a year and have done several designs with over 20 color changes. And there are some I want to do that have over 30 color changes. If you want detail, you're going to have color changes. Remember all those on a fixed income (which I will be when I retire) who you are a godsend to for giving away your designs. Ignore the others if it is spiteful criticism and not constructive, they're probably just jealous of you!

by karenjay 26 May 2010

I'm sorry you have had this reaction Dianne. I have bought designs from a well-known digitizer and found them 'lacking' in the quality I thought they should have. I have selected several designs from various sites and am in the process of test-stitiching them. If I find they are not stitching properly, as I would like, then I wonder if any other designs from them are okay - sometimes it is my fault with choice of fabric and stabiliser. If I really want to stitch a design with many color changes then I look in my software as to where I could cut down but often I'd lose the detail. There is one design -cross-stitch that I thought I would never do again with all the thread changes but it is so gorgeous, it is so worth doing. Even if someone buys a design that does not give them the RIGHT to complain - especially if there is nothing wrong with the design. They can choose whether to buy or not the same with free downloads - let them try and digitize!!!

6252
by joanne8125 26 May 2010

I can understand that when you do someting nice for someone and they want to complain to you for it, it would hurt your feelings but just take it in stride and realize just how many of us there are out here that appreciate your designs no matter how many thread changes, especially when they are for free. I am on a fixed income and if it weren't for digitizers like you who give their free designs I would not be able to enjoy this hobby as much as I do. So, please keep on sharing your talent and ignore the ungrateful ones. I hardly leave my machine anyway as I always think what if the needle or thread breaks, I should be there to stop the machine before any thing happens to it.

by honeychyle 26 May 2010

NO! You're not too touchy. My Mama used to say "Don't stop being nice just because someone treats you ugly". Almost everything I have embroidered has had at least that many thread changes. If it's free and you download it then "Keep your mouth shut!"

7568
by holly12 26 May 2010

I agree with what everyone has said. If they don't like it they don't have to download it. They are just rude for saying anything about a free design which I'm sure is a beautiful design. I have never gotten one on cuties that wasn't great. Arlene

31366
by turtleowl 26 May 2010

Some people are just rude and unfortunately they are always the loudest. I am among many who value your designs and am in awe of anyone with the talent to digitize their own designs. If someone dosen't want to change thread they should stick to redwork. The color changes are what makes the design what it is. If I were to feel the need to criticise a design(free or not) I would privately contact the digitizer with my problems and ask for help in resolving them.

2294
by mops Moderator 26 May 2010

No, you're not too touchy. There are lots of designs that have more than 10 colours and as often as not have many more colour changes. Today's free monkey design here on Cute for instance has 10 colours and 13 thread changes.
And whether you are giving or selling them - people can see the colour chart and decide if they want to have and use it or not.
Honest criticism and helpful comments is one thing, this sort of comments are ungrateful to say the least!

by gerryvb 26 May 2010

dear Dianne, thank you for offering the designs. People don't have to DL them it's their own choice.
By the way i never leave my machine during embroidering. It's afraid when I leave it alone LOL.
so many colors > many threadchanches, so what!
thanks and please keep on going digitizing!!and let's be proud of all digitizers that offer here their designs for free!

739765
by cherylgauteng 26 May 2010

Please do not let these people upset you. I am a new embroiderer but think that if you want something different and it has 12 colour changes - then so be it. That is what you need to and you do it to get the end result which will probably be spectacular. Perhaps they cannot do anything intricate and a little envy could be around the response ? I cannot digitize yet so am just SO grateful for any freebies that I can get. I will definitely email you for quality. Do not let people upset you - they stand in a different pair of shoes to you and that makes it so easy to criticise and get you down to their level. Keep going !

Don't fret, most of us LOVE your designs and colors! If I want something in one color I either turn off my stop or edit it in my 3D..I'd NEVER think of complaining about something free. Let's hope the comments were meant as constructive...yeah, I'm a cockeyed optimist! But tks for the designs & keep up the good work.

Well Diane, I certainly have nothing to add to the wonderful comments and statements already stated...simply because they are ALL correct. I'm a firm believer that if I perceive a fault or flaw in an idea or project to the point that I feel the need voice it...I should also be prepared to bring a resolution...if I were you I'd simply ask her/them how they feel the "problem" could be resolved! Obviously they liked the design well enough to proudly post it. Good Grief...12 color changes and not being able to leave their machine...I wish that were the worst "PROBLEM" I've ever had!!! I say "Keep up the great work...it is appreciated". ~Rita (*4 everyone)

Dear Dianne,
You are so awsome and giving. There is a lot of work behind all this designs, weather they have one thread or a gazillion. We are so spoiled, don't let those who love to pick get on your way. When we download a FREE design from wherever, we take chances and is our responsibility.I have put together the most amazing library wich I share with my daughter, and if she dares whinning about a design , I just tell her, "Don't get me started" Personally I know that you do the best, the more colors in a design the merrier. Be happy, send amessage back to this person and ask her to share some of her few color design. I LOVE COLORS, that is life. don't get discourage Missy, and by the way I use PES. Yolandita

I agree with the become a duck comment - don't fret over what you cannot control. You are very kind to offer your designs for free and we can all see what it will take to sew them out (color changes, stitch count, etc) before we download them and.or sew them. If we don't want that many color changes we should not accept your free gift.

11257
by lani02 26 May 2010

well poo hoo on her. Most designs that I have gotten for free are just fine. So what if there are a few extra thread changes. Do the design once and if it isn't what I want i don't use it again. Sorry you had a problem.

10084
by sewmom 26 May 2010

Most people on Cute are polite but there is always going to be someone with an opinion. I think if you put things in designs by Cuties then you would probably get mostly thank yous. I would hope that if there is a serious flaw in the design then someone should tell you so that it can be fixed and I would hope that you accept the useful information. I don't know which design you are speaking of but 12 color changes happen for intricate designs, if they don't like it, they shouldn't use it.

I'd happily accept constructive and justifiable criticism (although personally I'd never have the cheek to criticise a free design!) but 12 colours = 12 changes - fact of life! (or it is on my machine anyway!) Love and *4all from Dianne x x x

sewmom by sewmom 26 May 2010

I mentioned the constructive criticism because I know some Cuties say they are learning to digitize and use us for feedback. When I feel like something really important needs to be said I usually do it in a private message.

Dianne, I'm so sorry people are being critial of your work. As an artist, I learned a long time ago who's opionions to value and who's not to. Good criticism is helpful, but as you stated, 12 colors means 12 changes! Life is to short to let others control your passions, so hang in there and do what you love. God bless, Judy

I would consider the source,, and anyone who would criticise a FREE design, doesn't deserve to have their complaint valued. As far as she had to stay by her machine,,,,,,DUH anyone with any sense would do this any way. Do what you do, and don't let an insensitive person get to you. If she disliked the amount of color changes, why did she download in the first place, and why load it into her machine in the second? JMO. Thanks for what you do.

40378
by clawton 26 May 2010

I would say don't worry about it. If they looked at the color chart they should be aware of how many color changes there are. If too many don't download it. Just consider how many other downloaded that same design and didn't complain. I thank you for all of your contributions to the "Designs by Cuties"

Diane - we know that there is always someone that does like one thing or another. But, I like you, feel that if the design is free then you accept it as it is. She could have something like I am going to tackle that has 96 different color changes, and not that many colors. If as a embroider we choose a design that has 12 different colors, then you know that you will have to have 12 different color changes. A long time ago I was told by an associate that I had to become a duck - "let it roll off your back". I too was very senitive to my work. You just keep up the great work. We love you here. Hugs
