In New Zealand we have the 'commercial mothers day' in May, but the Church still has Mothering Sunday, which for us was yesterday. We usually have the traditional simnel cake for morning tea at church, though I confess I haven't made one myself yet. It's very nice though.

Thank you for your kind words. As Mothering Sunday is so much earlier in the UK than the US it is sometimes more difficult to find suitable embroidery to use for gifts for our mothers.

Happy Mother's day. We celebrate here in USA in May. I was in London once for the Queen Mother's birthday and saw the Queen Mother and Lady Di. in their carriages and beautiful outfits and hats to match. Must have been in the mid 1980's.

Love you all,

Thank you behalf of all mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers and those mothering a child (thanks to Ibrow for these words). I am daughter - so blessed to still have my mum here - mother to 2 great adults, grandmother, step grandmother and foster grandmother. I am so blessed to have my fantastic family. I'm in no hurry to upgrade to a greatgrandmother for a long time yet though.

Mothering Sunday here moves each year. It's on the 3rd Sunday before Easter, I understand that years ago when girls were in sevice they were given this day off to enable them to go home. Some employers also gave the girls a Simnel-Cake to take to their mothers - hence the reason that the traditional Easter cake in the UK is a simnel cake (A rich fruit cake with a layer of mazipan put through the centre of the cake before it is baked. It is also decorated with mazipan and twelve mazipan balls placed round the top.) Though I don't think it's popluar now - chocolate has taken it's place I think.

Did I really say 12 balls of mazipan on the top of the cake? Of course it's 11.
