I decided to start a new project.

I want to honor mothers in special but also fathers of course, grandparents and ancestors with a quilt project and want to ask you for some inspiration and input.

I would like to collect "words of wisdom", sayings and advices to combine them with some heirloom flower or victorian designs to create a memory quilt.
So, do you remember a precious saying of your mom or dad?
I am looking forward to your answers!!
Personally I will start with a quote of my grandpa
"Take YOUR time."
Thanks a lot and "see" you soon.

Great project idea!
One of the sayings from my mom:
The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence
My dad always said:
If you are going to do something do it right the first time.
My saying is:
Whatever floats your boat.

My grsnfmother used to say 'a blind man on a galloping horse will never notice' and I remember my grandfather saying 'of all the blood and stomach pills' this was always said with great emphasis and said slowly.
I have spent a lot of time saying 'To have faith in yourself as enough other people will put you down so dont put yourself down' I have said this to many children as well as my own. I also say 'Go for it'
I am sorry that so many of our bereavements have affected you but it looks as if there will be a spectacular outcome. I have an idea or two for remebering my mother but there is not the time to make anything at the moment, it will have to be a retirement project

Thank you all so much, this is exactly what I hoped for- and it is astonishing how similar the sayings of simple truth are in spite of different languages.
Thanks again!

I think this is such a wonderful idea and what a tribute to the people who loved us unconditionally. I remember my Dad always telling me to 'Do the best that I could do.' and 'Pay for it myself; don't use credit.' I never got into debt thanks to that little piece of advice. I think that you are going to have more pieces of advice than you can use. I am looking forward to the finshed project.

Glad to are back, I understand how you feel but we are here to support each other on every face of our life, but I do insist that all our personal sorrows should be on personal, if somebody wants to see what is going on that person just will need to go there, Keeping areas separated makes it nice and happier, specially for the new cuties.***

My Mom had many sayings. Here is a couple.
"What goes round comes round" "Do not seek revenge, as God will reward them in kind" "Remember you are never better than anyone else but you are no worse, you are equal" My M-I-L would always laugh and joke and her favourite saying was "You'l never miss a mother's love till she is buried beneath the clay" It sounds sad but when we think of it we have a good laugh and say she is there laughing and singing with us. Memories are great and good to laugh about them too. Take care - the best tribute to is to live life to the fullest. After loosing 3-4 members a year for years I adopted this motto and as I go thru different experiences I remember someone that is gone. Hugs to you.

I remember my granny who was so special to me. She always said "tut tut" when she was upset. She said it so softly but you knew she was upset. She lived to be just one month short of her 100th birthday. Not something everyone would say but it sticks with me. :)

Glad you are back, and I love your idea! My Mom always said "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it", and "Put some sugar on that hem", because one of my skirts or dresses was too short. She also told us to "Dress so you leave a lot to the imagination", I'd love to see your finished project!!!

Glad to see you back Eva. I was going to post tonight asking if anybody knew what happened to you. My Dad used to say "before buying something, think if you really can't go without it. If you can it is a luxury, then leave it". Those days everybody in SA were poor and you did'nt even notice or miss anything. My Mom used to say "if you do a thing, do it properly otherwise you've wasted your time". I used to wistle a lot when young and my Grama then used to say to me "girls who whistle are being thrown out the door". When I was sitting on a table she was forever telling me "when you sit on a table you never will get a husband". The older people here also said "there is always a lid for every pot, even if it is skew" meaning for everybody there will be a partner out there. I can go on for a long time with this but think I will stop here. It is a very good idea you have and you must pls post the outcome so we can see it. Annatjie

My mother said to me when I complained....."Can't never could do anything."
So we weren't allowed to say I can't...thus we COULD!

Eva, I can imagine how you felt, with all of the sorrow on this board.
Will you be making your quilt in German? If so, do the 'sayings' translate well into another language?
I remember "pretty is as pretty does".
"God helps those who help themselves".

You were missed Eva. Glad you're back again.
Love,
Jacqueline

Eva, my father past away 27 years ago, but as a child I remember him saying: "never give up, NEVER, NEVER..." I can't remember the rest, but I think it was actually a quote from Churchill, but it must have had a lasting impression on him...difficult childhood with a STEPMOTHER (the horrible stepmother type. My husband is a stepdad to my children, but he treats them as if they were his own)

Hallo Eva
What a wonderful idea.
I guess both my parents would say - Don't take anything for granted. They always reminds me that if God wants to he can take anything away within minutes.

Hi, Eva,
My parents have passed many years ago, and were very hardworking on our farm. I remember them saying:

"Where there's a will, there's a way!"
"Anything worth doing is worth doing right!"
"Watch what you say, the words may come back to haunt you!"
"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink!"
"Early to bed and early to rise, makes one healthy, wealthy, and wise!"
"The early bird gets the worm!"

Hope your quilt turns out great! I have such wonderful memories of growing up, although poor, so very loved and
taught true values of living. Its been many, many years since I lost my parents, but they live in my heart and mind through remembering their sayings daily.

as well as some that have already been posted, whenever it would rain, my mom would say that God was preparing a rainbow, and when it thundered, the angels were bowling :)
I can't wait to see you finished project. Please post it for us!
We missed you. Welcome home Eva.

Everyone has skeletons in their closet and God doesn't collect bones. Just soles.

Countertops are for glasses, not asses. :)
or
If men where birds, they would fly backwards... hehehe

Nite, nite, don't let the bed bugs bite.
Quit your bellyacheing.
An apple a day, keeps the doctor away
Early to bed early to raise, keeps aman, healthy and wise.
Old habits are hard to break.
Pay it forward
Do as i say, not as i do.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

My momma raised the four of us after daddy left.
She would always say when things went wrong
"It will all come out in the wash" and "give it time, everything will work out"

Hi My mom was the best. When things went wrong for us,and we were troubled, she would say "This too shall pass" Here is another ... the past is gone tomorrow is the future today is a gift that's why it's called the present. Enjoy your gift! Or worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. Suzanne

My mother use to say: "Remember what you do to others will come back to you ten fold, whether it be good or bad." She loved white and red roses. She was a very wise woman she raised 6 kids on her own, my father died when I was six months old and the oldest child was 14 she only had a 6th grade education. Another saying was "You can do anything if you want to do it bad enough." I use both of these with my three children. Sara

Eva,
If my Dad was asked ; "how are you?"
he would always reply - "why are you a doctor"
He loved to say - Come on, Smile and be Happy.
or "Don't worry be happy." and "Are children always like this"

But he always had a smile or grin on his face.

Looking forward in seen what the quilt will be like - Hugs Yvonne

It is short, just only 2 words, but it means have trust in the life, it is the most important

My mum always says - "Take time to smell the Roses".

My particular favourite is "If you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all".

My Grandfather used to say "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again". He said they were words from a song from the movie "Swingtime" with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers back in the 30's.

My Nanna's advice was to always wear a smile on your face because people found it hard to be angry when you are smiling at them.

I saw this on one of my pictures "People change, things go wrong, just remember, Life goes on!

Just a few for you. Good luck with the collection.

Love and blessings Chris
