A friend gave me this tip:

Try to use your appliqué designs, just the set of stitches which normally hold the fabric patches in place. Then use paint (markers, pencils, glitter…..) to fill the inside.

And check your collection for Openwork or outline designs, red or bluework and chainstitched ones- they can give good results too.

I've used applique designs without added extra material and the effect is very good, but I like your friends idea of just using the placement stitching. I used to teach craft and I would tell my students that there is no set way of doing any craft just experiment - how did all the crafts we have today happen if someone in the past and said 'I wonder what would happen if....?'. Take your craft to where you want it to be.
Thanks for this tip - I can't wait to try it.

Great tip, thanks Eva!! I have lots of redwork designs for Christmas, and I like the idea of sticking a fsl ornament in the card, too. I only send to people far away, so that would be a double present! Hugs, Marji

Excellent advice Eva. I often look for simple blue or red work or the last outline stitching to do cards. *4U
