was putting it on the wrong side of the sheet. She said the top sheet should be put on right side up. Wrong side facing the bottom sheet. I said no way the top sheet goes right side down so the pretty side is facing the bottom sheet. So when you turn your bed back the pretty side is showing. Okay give me your take on which side is up or down. She also says you dont turn the top of the top sheet back over the blankets.

well heres my 2 cents also....frankly it doesn't matter in my household, because the sheets never stay on anyway....First it was me with the hot flashes now its my hubby...most of the blankets are on the floor....no time to make the bed with all the kids going one way or the other and quite frankly, I get tireed of making a bed only to mess it up in a few hours....

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Did you know that there used to be a rule amonst the older people that the top sheet must be wrong side down. I was taught the same thing when doing my teachers dip. in Home Economics. It is so that when you fold it over, the right side shows. No one can see the wrong side once you have a blanket over it, but you can see the folded over side.

LOL...Ladies I've laughed so hard my sides hurt..actually it's all in how we were taught at home. But if you want to make sure it's really done the correct way...use the same colors in your bobbin just as you would for fsl, then it would be on both sides and one of them is bound to be correct...besides who are we trying to impress other than ourselves. This has been a HOOT! Loving it.

ROFLOL!! This may be the funniest post I have read!

I put the right side of the sheet facing down so I can fold over the pretty side even though my DH thinks that is wrong. He does not get up in the middle of the night and change it. I put the tp over the top and at one time or another I may have changed it in places other than my own home. I also have a compulsive need to change the light switches if they are wrong.

I agree with you. Tell your neighbor to check out the sheets next time she stays a a hotel. Also, my sister had a professionl cleaning business her clients were the very wealthy who had vacation homes she took care of. I used to do as your friend says until my sis pointed out that I was incorrect.

This whole post is a hoot. I had tears of laughter. As for the TP, I like it over the top too, by my left-handed hubbie likes it down the wall. I have to admit that kids and cats did get me doing it his way.

Well .. I guess I have to add my 2 cents .. although this is really NOT funny. As a kid, we never had top sheets either, and we were really on the poor side. However, one time I sent a night at a friends house .. she lived in Cincinnati, IN THE CITY, and they (a family of about 9 children) used an outhouse. It was winter, and they piled their coats on top of their bed, and slid under a blanket to keep warm ... 3 or 4 kids to a bed. Also, the girls dried their long hair in the winter by turning on the kitchen oven, and opening the door. BUT THEY WERE GREAT KIDS, AND WELL WORTH KNOWING. After I spent the night there, I appreciated sleeping with my two sisters in a regular size bed. We did have a coal furnace for heat. I NEVER FORGOT THEM OR THAT NIGHT.

First - print this page and give it to your neighbor! Second I always make my bed with the sheet right side up - becauseeeeeee my mom was an r.n. and when they changed bed linens in the hospital (way back when) it was square corners on the bottom (anybody still do these on top) and flat smooth on the top. Didn't matter which way was up there was no design just starched white. So I always make my bed top sheet up and my dh hates it and has been know to reverse it in the middle of the night while I'm in the loo! MEN! Like they say can't live with em can't kill em! (kidding) Anyway it's all about doing it the way you want it, it's your home, anybody not like it doesn't have to stay. As for the tp, my goes over but when Pogo gets an urge it's completely unrolled and pulled throughout the entire house. Then if I have put in on backwards, he gets a little attitude and literally shreds the entire roll. I have been known to re-roll toilet paper but not for company!

nonmusicmom by nonmusicmom 21 Sep 2009

At the price of toilet paper I would reroll too! Yes I also make hospital corners on all of my beds. My neighbor doesnt tuck her top sheet in on the side of the foot of the bed eighter.

maryjo by maryjo 21 Sep 2009

Navy brat here and we have square corners. DH used to try the bouncing quarter bit on our boys beds. They never did get them tight enough to bounce that quarter.

blhamblen by blhamblen 23 Sep 2009

I searched in google and this is what it can up with.

Step1 Secure the fitted sheet onto your mattress, making sure to smooth out any wrinkles.

Step 2 Place the top sheet over the fitted sheet, with the print side facing down. Be sure the top of the sheet is aligned with the top edge of the mattress and that equal lengths of the top sheet are hanging down each side of the bed.

Step 3 Tuck the bottom end of the top sheet under the mattress. Tuck both sides of the top sheet under the mattress, stopping halfway down each side. Let the remaining half of the top sheet hang freely on each side.

Step 4 Place your quilt or comforter on top of the top sheet with the patterned side of the quilt or comforter facing up. Fold the top third of the quilt or comforter back.

Step 5 Fold the top sheet back over the top of the folded section of the quilt or comforter, leaving at least two inches between the edge of the sheet and the edge of the comforter.

Step 6 Arrange pillows in a decorative fashion to cover the exposed fitted sheet where the comforter and top sheet have been folded back

It just occurred to me that if you use the same color/colour bobbin thread that it definitely does not matter which side you embroider on? But, be certain that you use a two-way design because if your gift recipient doesn't put the sheet on the way it was embroidered it will be upside down when folded down.

Something else to consider. This 'ain't' no easy job. Why don't you just buy them some darned sheets??

(I am laughing).

I'm with you, in fact one of my sheets sets actually has an additional border stitched onto it and it is stitched on with piping, in such a way, that you have to put the sheet right side down so that when you fold the top part over the pretty border and piping is showing.

Otherwise, you would have to only bring the sheet up to within pillow distance from the top end of the mattress and then when you get into bed it wouldn't cover over your shoulders, let alone be able to snuggle it up around your neck.

Hugs n roses, Meganne

You are right. On the right side, the embroidery upside down when you stitch it, so that when you turn the sheet over the blanket it shows the right way up.
When I got married 45 years ago, I had separate bottom sheets and embroidered top sheets with matching pillows, plus woolen blankets. They were shop bought and embroidered on the right side. And I made and embroidered some linen ones as well, nice open seams and all. I still have a number of them I was very proud of and only used on special occasions - like my parents or in-laws staying with us. Should have used them more often as now it's all duvets and covers (do you call them duvets in the States or comforters?) and they are sitting in the back of the cupboard.

sandynavas by sandynavas 21 Sep 2009

Mine are called duvets - I always thought you put the comforter in the duvet cover and it then became a duvet . . . what does this old country girl know?

nonmusicmom by nonmusicmom 21 Sep 2009

It depends on where you were raised I think. In CA where I grew up in a fairly poor family it was called a comforter but we only had home made quilts. When I moved to CO they most people called them comforters now we live in AR and evryone calls them duvets.

by cutiepie 21 Sep 2009

I'm going to ramble on here, so just hold on. =]

If you just have plain sheets, it really doesn't matter at all which way you put them on the bed. My grandmother would put them on one way and after a week, turn them over the other direction so that she didn't feel that she had to wash them as often. And if your pillow cases are plain or don't match, you tuck them under the blanket so that they don't show, which precludes being able to turn the sheet over the blankets. This is probably your neighbor's situation.

If, however, you have nicely embroidered sheets and matching pillowcases, you are probably going to want to show them off a bit. That is where the idea of placing the pillows on top of everything and having the sheet edge folded over came from.

As someone else mentioned, embroidery and lace were once the privilege of only the rich and royalty. Of course you would like to have others feel like you fit into that group, if you can. Why do you think that so many people who do genealogy want to find out that they are related to long-gone Kings and Queens?

So, if you embroider the top sheet, you will want it on the "right" side, and have it folded over to look pretty, just like you have said. To anyone who says differently, you can just smile and nod graciously, while you secretly pity them, as they are not as classy as you obviously are. =D

I'm glad that you got a kick out of my response, Meganne. It was kind of tongue in cheek at points.

Personally, I have no idea if the commoners (poor people) had sheets. I try to keep a proper distance from them. Can't have any of that "poorness" rub off on my perfect, porcelain skin or anything. :D

sandynavas by sandynavas 21 Sep 2009

I have never been one who was so proud that there was lace on my sheets to parade friends, family and neighbors through my bedroom . . . In fact, I have never even wanted lace on my sheets - they scratch. Did you know that if you stay in a hotel and the previous occupant has not stained the sheets they can just pull them tight and you wouldn't know the housekeeper was too lazy to change them out? Except at the Marriott because their mattresses are too thin to hold the sheets in place anyway.

Just an unpaid advertisement . . .

I'm so glad everyone here is so funny.

nonmusicmom by nonmusicmom 21 Sep 2009

Back in the days when a person could buy pretty TP, those that had different colors and flower designs on them, were rolled so that when you put it on the holder the paper pulled the TP from over the top so the designs showed and made your bathroom look pretty. Nowadays, you cannot buy colored or printed TP so I suppose it doesn't matter. I'm an "over-the-top" kinda gal, hee hee hee.

Way back when hand embroidered linen was the hallmark of the very rich or royal, hand embroidered borders or elaborate monograms with or without a ton of lace on the right side of the top sheet tops was a must. The sheets were put on the bed right sides together, so when the top sheet was folded back over the edge of the blankets or when the bedding was turned back, the hand embroidered designs showed. Isn't it nice that this custom has not gone out of style>

You are right. You put the pretty side down and flip it over the blanket. The point of the sheet is it is something you can launder frequently so it goes between you and the blanket. That way the blanket stays cleaner longer and does not have to be washed as often.

I can only answer for myself, but I always put the pretty side facing down so when I turn the sheet back over the blanket the pretty side shows. I would much rather snuggle the sheet under my chin than a scratchy blanket... and the sheet protects the blanket or duvet so it needs washing less often. The other way just seems strange to me. This is the way I have always done it, also my mum and gran :)

sandynavas by sandynavas 20 Sep 2009

I think your description of the sheet protecting the blanket is the true justification.

nonmusicmom by nonmusicmom 21 Sep 2009

That makes perfect since. I am very allergic to wool so when we would go to my Aunts house to visit my Mom would have to take me a sheet and blanket to use on the hide a bed because she only had wool blankets.

8431
by marymadeit 20 Sep 2009

I was taught as you were. Also, I was taught to turn the pretty part of the hem over on itself or put the blanket between the sheet and the turn down. You might go look at sheets that already have embroidery on them and you will disvover the manufactures do it as I do.
Hope this helps.

I think we have an obligation to protect our friends from the embarrasment of upside down toilet paper! Yes I am with DK, change it and fold it into a point....sad but true.

For those of you planning to paint....must do behind, buy the skinny long handled roller from Home Depot and your done in a jiffy without disassembly!

i AM NOT COMPULSIVE, really. doesn't everyone do this stuff?

cinderoak - my tinks thou doest work too hard!

Compulsive or not, the sheet goes down, the T/P goes over, the tank does NOT get moved, and yes, i do change it in other people's homes.

Now, how many of you have this crazy idea about multiple light switches? If I have more than one switch to a light, unless the light is on, they all must point down. I've been known to walk the hallway in the dark to make certain they are. Now who is going to check MY HOUSE LIGHT SWITCHES in the middle of the night?????

OKAY I didn't know I was opening the box of compulsive behavors!lol Yes to the tp going over and yes to the papertowel sgoing over and no I don't fold the corners of the TP. But nothing bugs me more than to have someone finish of the roll of TP and start a new one then set it on the FLOOR and not change out the roll. Yes the light swithes need to be up when on and down when off.

OH another can of worms. I get so aggravated by people not replacing an empty TP roll. All of the TP holders in my house(4) are designed so that the roll just slides on. No little bar to remove and replace. And some of the lazy bums who use my facilities still won't replace the roll. They balance the new roll on top of the old cardboard. I have gone so far as to tell certain people to "get back in the bathroom and put the new roll on the holder"

I agree with you. I hate it when people don't replace the roll of toilet paper! Are they that lazy or what?????????

I think the solution to your problem is to find out if they turn the sheet back over or not ,then embroider the sheet to suit their preferences. You could end up doing both methods ,not everybody is the same .

My kids do it the way i taught them. Since thier mates don't do the linens It's easy to know what way works for them. Thanks :0)
