Aren't there any fireflies in Northern California? Really? That's so sad! Mine are all out now, lighting up the night. Hugs, Marji

dlmds by dlmds 27 Jun 2009

Daisy, Now you will have to find out where they are, and take a vacation just to see the fireflies. In the mean time look at Yoriko's site. H&*.

There is an enzyme call LUCIFERASE that makes fireflies glow. No Cuties, it is not the bug blushing cause some guy bug said something Cute to her but it is used to attract the other species.

You all make me smile too! I think we all caught fireflies in jars and let them go later when we were kids, so fun! Now I just watch them :)

For the real ones, it's a chemical they can control. Ever heard of a glow worm? Same thing. It IS used in finding a mate. For the stitched one, I like the glow in the dark thread or metallic.

Gerry, I have seen the fireflies, however, I have never seen the glow worms. Where are they located? H&*.

marjialexa by marjialexa 27 Jun 2009

On the ground, and sometimes on low leaves and stems, you need to look hard for them. M

Actually, yes! The 'glow worm' is the female firefly. She stays in one place and glows, the males fly around and answer with their flashes, they find each other, and Voila! baby lightning bugs! Hee hee hee

dlmds by dlmds 27 Jun 2009

Thanks Marji, I did not know this. All of you are great. H&*.
