is there some type of scale to go by? #of stitches, time involved, cost of design and material? I could use some type of guide before committing myself to this project. Thank you.

Judy, general rule of thumb - $ @ 1000 stitches.

And set a minimum. The time for setting up before starting embroidering is equal, whatever the size, so a minimum of $ 2.50 is quite reasonable.
