This is just one more of the stupid laws someone thought up while probably sitting in the sauna at some expensive spa, like the one about making regular light bulbs obsolite in a few years.
If the lead paint used on toys made in China had not come to light none of this would be going on. Just one more reason why the manufacturing of goods should be returned to America. If people weren't so greedy we would all be better off. I'm 60 years old and I slept in a bed painted with lead paint...wasn't anything else...and low and behold I'm still alive and so are my relatives who for the most part probably slept in the same bed. If anyone thinks we are not headed toward a socialistic country just look around. The government is trying to control everything we do including making an honest living and taking care of our own. This stinks to high heaven. Someone is bound to make a lot of money from this and it won't be the cottage industry.

I can not believe how pathetic the world we live in has become. If it is so bad and we have to have laws and rules like this then how did we (meaning myself) make it to the grand age of 58 without all of the regulations to protect me. They were not around when I was growing up and I appear to have survived without too much trouble. The people making these ridiculous laws must have their heads somewhere it shouldn't be! You very really win against crap like this as they have forgotten who put them there and why they are there - "For the People" - but Good luck anyway!

Here is a letter I emailed to my Senators from Wisconsin and my Congressmen:

Dear Senator,

I, Charlene , must express my opposition to the “Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.” This bill criminalizes the artisians and home crafters of this country. This bill is not only affecting our fragile economy, this bill also affects the craft creativity of our American culture which includes quilting, embroidering, sewing and list goes on. It also will affect the millions of people in this country that can only afford to shop at thrift shops. Here, I want to strongly oppose this bill.

I have been reading all the links posted here, and this is going to be a disaster! We need to contact our Congresspeople about this problem. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has no authority to change the law that has been passed, only Congress can do that. Contact CPSC, by all means, but also call you Senators & Congresspeople! Apparently this law was passed so quickly over the problem of Chinese goods that were contaminated that no one really thought it through about the far reaching effect it would have on home businesses, thrift shops and the like. Call or write your congressional representatives, and please post this on every place you go! There are really enough embroiderers out there to make a difference if we all band together!! Marji

this is what has allready happened in the Uk and we can no longer create childrens toys be they knitted sewn or created by any other method unless you have it tested, this means that if you sew a doll for a child then you can pay to have it tested OK but YOU CAN ONLY CREATE THAT ONE DOLL AND NO OTHER if you deviate from the tested doll in anyway whatsoever then you will require a new certificate of safety for that one,,,
In the Uk we are no longer able to build dolls houses for children to play with without a certificate. We can however build a "model house" for adults to display scaled items in.
where the Jam and Jerusalem gang used to make a lot of knitted dolls this is no longer allowed due to the health and safety act, If grandmas makes a soft toy for a G child and uses sewn on button eyes and the grandchild chews one off and swallowes it Grandma is then libel under the health and safety act of commiting a crime against that child, she can then be sued by the childs parents acting as the "childs best friend"
act on this or loose out as we have.....

Please take this seriously everyone I do not have a home business that will be affected. I do hop at thrift stores so that will be affected. Then a light bulb went off in my head my oldest daughter Tatum has a home business making jewelry this law can and will affect her, so I am asking you to not just focus on yourselves but your neighbors, friends and family members can this bill affect them?

kharriman by kharriman 05 Jan 2009

I just sent my email to them. I also told them that the county that I live in is the POOREST county in Maine. & passing this law would only make it worse.

I am so afraid people will not take notice of this and react until it is too late. The damage will be irreversible I'm afraid.

The e-mail address on the website has a typo in it, apparently. There is a 'w' in Parts that should not be there. The first one I sent came back, the corrected one didn't, yet anyway. Marji

Thanks for bringing this well-intentioned but truly idiotic law to our attention, Soi. I have read the article and sent a letter to the appropriate parties. This law is basically unenforceable, because its scope is astronomical in its reach. It would require all our police forces to make this work, and then some. The bad thing is that it will occasionally trap some unsuspecting small business and ruin them. We need a law that is workable and enforceable, that needs to be applied to the Chinese manufacturers who started this problem in the first place. In case you thought the threat of Communism was gone with the fall of the Soviet Union, think again. China will put us all out of business, then just purchase us. And we will not say a word, because everybody wants those cheap goods. Fascinating. This is not just a vote, please write a nice coherent e-mail or letter. It's worth the time. Marji

Yes, please read Charlie's post!! The VOTE button is just for the article, in order to contact the leglislators you must write an e-mail or snail mail!!! The VOTE button doesn't do a thing about the problem except keep the article at the top!! Thanks, Charlie, for mentioning that. Marji

It is important that everyone takes a moment to send an email to oppose this bill going into effect. The vote button at the bottom is just for the site purposes to keep the article at the top place for readers. There are 3 ways to contact the commision
1. email Sec102ComponentPawrtsTesting@cpsc.gov
2. Fax (USA) 301 504-0127
OR
3. snail mail
