The purpose of serger thread is to use it to hold the edge of fabric and we use at least 3 threads to do 1 thing. That tell us which serger thread doesn't have to be strong and pretty. Therefore, the process to make serger thread is the minimum which is why serger thread is cheap. Serger thread has lots of fuzz on the surface. Those fuzz means 2 things. Fuzz will come off with fiction. Fuzz means the surface is rough. When the fuzz come off, they will clogg up your sewing machine or embroidery machine. The roughness will wear and tear to your sewing machine and embroidery machine. Both sewing machine and embroidery machine are very precise. Now, we are talking how many stitches per minute. Any imprecision will cause your sewing machine and embroidery machine break thread or break needle or create bird nest at the bottom of the embroidery. Bird nest is good for decorating your house but not on your embroidery item. In another word, don't use serger thread to embroider or sew.

The purpose of embroidery thread is able to go through the intensity of the embroidery machine and make your embroidery art pretty and colorful. That is why there are lots of colors. They are like paint except that you can't mix them like pain. You can mix two colors that is the maximum amount. Embroidery thread also has gloss shiny surface which decrease the fuzz that you see in serger thread and reduce the fiction that is created by your embroidery machine. The process to make embroidery thread of course has lots more involve and takes longer and more chemical to put in to make it shiny and smooth on the surface. That is why they are more expensive.

The purpose garmant thread is to hold the fabric together which can endure the human or animal movement and the machine movement. Garmant thread doesn't have as much colors selection as embroidery thread. The best brands in the market are Gutermann and Mettler. They are not cheap. It is because the cotton fiber that is in those brands thread are 9 times longer than other brands. Gutermann and Mettler do not pay me to say that. Buy I told people that want me to sew for them, please bring Gutermann or Mettler thread.

There are other threads for other purpose like fusible thread, soluable thread and upholstry thread. Since this is embrodery related web site. I stop here. I hope the above information will enhance your happy embroidery experience.

Good descriptions. However, several people here have used serger thread for lace doilies and they are gorgeous. They look more like the hand crocheted ones my mother made.

There are embroidry thread that does not have shine on it. Please advice them not to use serger thread because it will mess us their machine.
