Need some help - again. I am making bags which have applique. The material I am using for the applique is a denim. When I cut the material it frays really badly and the final satin stitch does not cover the poky threads.

I have already ironed a backing on but has made no difference. Do you think that if I went around the edge with Fray Stop and let it dry before the satin stitch it would help?
The answer would be to buy some felt. Cannot get it anywhere near where I live. I have now heard that our only tiny sewing shop is closing at the end of the month.

I have solved the problem. DH and I had a day out yesterday and drove to the next big town. I managed to get felt and loads of zips and also batting. I felt like a kid in a candy store. This morning I made a bag and used the felt. Thrilled with the result.

Try cutting the fabric on the bias.

If you have a serger/overlocker, use that for the edges. Otherwise use a close zigzag around. Hugs. Nan

Thank you ladies for your help. I have got a couple of things in mind.

A fusible for both sides might help. Also extend the fusible a little. That keeps the edge neat Trim after having applied fusible on the wrong side of the material. After ironing it on as applique those edges again are held in place.
Another possibility could be water soluble school glue. Apply around the edges on the wrong side, put in place and iron down.

Sorry I am not very good explaining. Hope this helps.

Hmmm, perhaps some heavy spray starch before cutting, or take some water soluble stabilizer mixed with a bit of water to make a solution then spray or paint on the fabric and dry before cutting... Does the applique have a zig zag tack down after the run line tack down? If it does not, that would help secure the edges before the satin stitch border is stitched...

Sorry to hear your work isn’t going as expected. I havnt used Fray Stop but do you have any iron on interfacing that you could iron onto the denim to support it? Very sad to hear your local sewing shop is shutting. Whoops need to read more carefully that you have ironed a backing on. Sorry I’m currently out of ideas. Try the fray stop
